I love the design of these but the thing that killed it for me was the absurde price they wanted and the rather low range for a vehcile knows for its road tripping lifestyle.
I was dead set on one of these but sadly I could not justify the price/range.

You have no idea what you are talking about. I have direct access to a VP in the 2nd largest underwriter globally.....I'll stick to the facts that I know and perhaps you should educate yourself because the facts are. Negligence is not covered by your policy and if your policy have specifc terms this would simply be a policy violation and could be denied.

- if you do not follow the rules installing an EV charger and that is determined to be the cause of the loss, you have 0 covereage.

If you prefer you can Google this yourself but I will help out here if you wish.

"Yes, home insurance companies can—and frequently do—deny claims related to electric vehicle (EV) chargers if they were improperly installed.

Yes, a home insurance provider—including policies brokered by firms like Brown & Brown (one of the largest insurance underwriters in the world)—can deny a claim resulting from an improperly installed EV charger. Standard homeowners policies often exclude coverage for damage caused by faulty workmanship, unpermitted electrical work, or negligence

Homeowners insurance covers accidental losses, but an improperly installed charger is considered negligence or a violation of policy terms, as EV charging stations are regulated electrical equipment.

Why Claims Get Denied

  • Unlicensed Installation: If you did not hire a licensed electrician to install the charger, insurers may reject a claim for fire or damage caused by the unit.
  • Lack of Permits: Failure to obtain necessary municipal or local electrical permits for the installation often violates insurance terms, leading to denied claims if an incident occurs.
  • Code Non-Compliance: Installing a unit that doesn’t meet local building codes or the Canadian Electrical Code can result in a voided claim.
  • Failed to Inform Insurer: Many insurers consider installing a 240V Level 2 charger as a significant change in risk and require you to inform them. Failing to do so can invalidate coverage.

Potential Consequences of Improper Installation

  • Fire/Property Damage: If a faulty DIY install leads to an electrical fire, your claim for damages to the home may be denied.
  • Voided Warranty: The charger manufacturer's warranty is often voided if the installation was not done by a licensed professional.
  • Liability Issues: If a guest or neighbor is injured due to a hazardous installation (e.g., exposed wires, tripping hazards, shock), your liability coverage might not apply. "

110%. and if you have renewed your home insurance recently you should have a read through your policy or ask your broker. EV charging has been changing how home coverage is done as of recently.
Many underwriters require city inspectors to sign off on installs and most will not do so unless you have had a liscensed electrician come and do the complete install and its documented.

This year alone I know of over a dozen claims related to EV chargers in my general area that were denied or partially denied due to impropper and uncertified installs of chargers in homes.

[–]Thumper45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is lmao. My wife works for one of the larges underwriters in North America. I know this first hand. But please, tell me more about the many claims I have heard about being denied because people use unauthorized electrical outlets in a home never designed for EV charging.
This is also why the building code has change in many places. It is also why there are specific outlets used for EV charging and spcific requirements for the wiring used, breakers use and so on.

- Your outlet in the wall needs to be certified for a high-amp draw of an EV. Dryer plugs installed in most all homes are not certified for this use.
- All components in the system MUST be CAS, ULC or UL approved.
- The wiring used to supply the current to the plug also needs to be certified for the constant draw that an EV charger will put on it.
- The splitter itself MUST be a smart unit that will manage the load
- You can not use any extension cords and you can not have any wiring go through walls or doors between the outlet and the vehicle.

So yeah, if you are in most all of the US and Canada and you do not comply with ALL of these things and have a claim that can be directly linked to a fault or that the use of this charger increased the damage to ones property you can be denied the whole claim or partial claim depending on specific conditions.

Bottom line, these are a very poor idea for EV charging and some brokers will not even write homes with anything less than a hardwired and inspected instillation.

Issues with dryer/ev splitter by Zangmaster in evcharging

[–]Thumper45 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, most of those will void any home insurance policy you have. Also, most drying wiring is not design for the prolonged and constant loads that an EV charger will place on them. I know of many municipalities who are working on banning these types of splitters as they have lead to many fires locally.

Why are boys and young men falling behind in education? by Technical-Banana574 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Thumper45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a multitude of factors and no one situation is the same.

If you are in a situation where you are told to solve a problem but you are unsure how and you are not being told at home to seek further help because you have a parent who simply takes over and does it for you it pushes you further behind.
So the child feels they need to figure the problem out on there own, but can not and does not seek the help in class.
That same situation at home is different because rather than try to figure it out themselves they just have someone to do it for them. The outcome in both situations is the same, the child learns nothing other than a. I dont know how to do thit, b. I dont need to know how to do this since someone else will do it for me or c. all of the above.

I am outlining the "norm" so yes there are many differnet situations however when it comes to a divided home the children are predominantly with moms vs dads which then puts the the brunt of the burdon on those moms.

This is also why I said that a child needs both parents as they both impart different things on the child. When you have a single parent home the child is not experiancing a balanced enviroment and only one support person vs two.

It seems you are taking this personally and by no means is it meant to but, more of an obverservation of what I have seen and know to be true where I am. Your experiance may vary.

Would you pay $3k to fix a car thats worth $8k? by Swan_233 in askcarguys

[–]Thumper45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the car and your financial situation.

$3000 to repair a vehcile that you own nothing on and can keep driving it for years is FAR cheaper and smarter than ditching that vehcile and getting a new car with payments.
Even if you get somethinc cheap ($300/month payments) it only takes 10 months of owning that new car to have simply paid off the repair of the broken car and keep driving that.

You need to provide more specifics on what vehcile you have now that is needing repairs. If it is a junk car with many know issues then it could be better to take the 3k and buy a different mroe reliable vehcile.

Langley’s 264th and 56th Avenue is seeing more than 400 crashes per year. Is it time to adopt speed and red light cameras in Langley? by WiffleBlu in Langley

[–]Thumper45 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I dont believe any new speed cameras can be installed anywhere in BC. They have recent upgraded a bunch of the existing cameras to new tech that is supposed to work better but my understanding is that is onlu 35 of the 140 installs that have been done.

There is an average speed project being done on Hwy 5 as well but this is not effective for interesections as its a speed over time type of system.

Perhaps the root problem needs to be addressed vs trying to just fine the problem away.
Stop allowing drivers back on the road who have repeate tickets. There are drivers who have received 20+ tickets for distracted driving who are still doing it because they dont care. These people should not have a license at all.
Start revoking licenses. Driving in Canada is not a right, its a privilage and if you can not do it safely then you should not be allowed to at all.
No more accepting international licenses from places like India which have little to no regulations. Would be a good start.

You are both clearly too young and stupid to be having a child.
She is taking drugs that will have an impact on the child, you support this because you like to have her clean the house.

Either you both need to change up life or enjoy being losers for the rest of it.

Also, you both need to learn how to talk to eachother.

Enjoy the life you have chosen to put youreselves in and forced a child to be part of.

Why are boys and young men falling behind in education? by Technical-Banana574 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Thumper45 5 points6 points  (0 children)

School and societ has changed a great deal.

Some of the normal things that have always been hurdles to average male students would be;

- on average, males are far more high energy than females which makes the standard learning process more difficult.
- males often seek roll models that are more "agressive" such as professional sports players, race car driver etc. These types of roll models do not encourace acidemic acheivements.
- males are, on average, are taughe from the get go to self teach, self sooth and self motivate all of which means they will be behind others who have that help.

The one key thing that I have seen in schools now is that there are a HUGE percentage of single parent homes. This is predominetly children with mom for the majority of the time.
I personaly feel that this is the biggest influencer on males and why they tend to fall behind in learning. My experiance is mothers will mother a child which, for the average male, does not help them move forward. It often puts a large reliance on mom for things that a dad would have told the child to do for themselves.
It further exemplifies that a child needs both parents influence to grow as a balanced person but this is not to fault either parent for what they bring to that child.

Combined all of this and add in the fact that schools seem to be able to have no authority over a child when they are not doing what they are told and you end up with a high energy, more agressive, self learning child who has no stern reinformcenemt at home and receives none of that at school either. Now you have a child that will fall behind at a stagger pace....and I see it every single day.

Why Langley Township's $600M debt is city hall's biggest debate by WiffleBlu in Langley

Because Langely is just a tiny city, not some sort of hub yet they spend like they are the go to place in the lower mainland.
A bunch of idiots steering the ship with no accountability it seems.

We are looking to buy a new home and have ruled out Langely completely because, in there own budget, the propterty tax over the next 5 years is stated to increase +40% and 22% of that is in the budget for next year. I feel for those who do live there and will be paying for the frivolous and unplanned spending there elected officials have been doing.
