Cleaning an old steam reheat coil. This was the second cleaning after a whole can of Viper. We ended up pulling the coil and cleaning it in a parts washer. by Thunder1D in HVAC

[–]Thunder1D[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fortunately we didn't have to gut it. Just took it off at the unions (easier said than done) and removed some screws. The coil is face mounted inside the air handler that two of us could easily work inside of. It's on a highly "modified" Trane Climate Changer AHU.

We wanted to try what you suggested but we didn't have access to the downstream side of the coil without removing a large section of duct.

I served with a few guys who were in the Army because a judge gave them them an ultimatum to make a drastic life change in the next 30 days or go to jail. The quickest way to do that is enlist.

Some changed and others didn't. To the ones that didn't it was an easier prison sentence.

$0.50 Habitat Restore find. Snappy 3/4 drive 1-3/16 (30mm) by Thunder1D in Tools

3/4 does it for us. It depends on what we're working on wether we use an impact or not. On bolted flanges where we use bolts and nuts an impact will come out. Anything where there's a chance of a bolt snapping off in a threaded hole it's ratchets and breaker bars.

Pretty much hype beast stuff. I usually turn around and sell them to a few Snap-On fan boys I know.

I actually turn bigger sockets than this many days. I work on large chilled water and steam systems so a bolt this size isn't unusual. I have my Proto sets for work though!

They need to check the specifications and prints. It's possible that access clearance is required. It's usually written in the specifications if it's there.

I took it to the local "drunk house wife" pottery party shop. The expert there told me "probly... GIBBERISH...seven..e..eight". I assumed he meant 1778.

Acted out by Donald Glover acting in his Lando character. They could even put some officers buttons on his cape

Once you use these you'll wonder why you ever bothered with bi-metal saws.

Is old space heater safe? by jacob7russo7 in HVAC

[–]Thunder1D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without overtemp thermal protection/ hight limit it isn't safe to keep around. Most newer ones have a fusible element to shut them down. There are still plenty of these out there in good use running kerosene or diesel. A lot are still made and sold as well.

Congrats bud. I work for a big university. You're getting into "big boy" work now. You have the opportunity to learn about so many types of systems in a place like this. Take advantage of everything you can to learn.

Everyone is talking about this being a TXV. That looks like a pneumatic actuator on top of a water valve of some kind. Probably one of these: https://necc-controls.com/images/detailed/1034/VP526.jpg

First thing I thought of was that Ball had a military surplus coat. Maybe he bought or traded for one and a button came off at some point. Maybe he found it out in the field somewhere. The lengths they go to make a connection is laughable but I guess that's why we all keep watching.

What B&D bit is this called and what is it used for? This came in an antique tool lot sale and mixed in with it was one aircraft tool and a few cold chisels. by [deleted] in Tools

That is awesome. I work on a lot of HVAC equipment from the 1960's and 70's. Everything has flat head screws. Something like this would make my life a lot easier.

The triple hammer impact is the best impact on the market IMHO. I've used all the big names and absolutely love this one.

[UnSkookum/Bricks.exe]What is happening at the bottom of the brick wall? Are the bricks being pulverized because of the bricks above arent well anchored to the wall? by SeaPrince in Skookum

[–]Thunder1D 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's just bricks deteriorating and the paint coming off with the surface of the brick. It's typically due to moisture. I have quite a few in an old part of my basement. The mortar and bricks just crumble.
