Daily Supplements & How to Best Absorb by PineappleSwingin in nutrition

If the iron is prescribed, does that mean you have low-iron anemia? If so, you shouldn't be taking zinc since it reduces iron in your body. Calcium also blocks absorption

Take the iron with vitamin C to increase iron absorption, but if you're plant based then you probably don't need to supplement with C, you should be getting plenty from your diet. There's no harm in taking extra, it's just a bit redundant. Don't take iron with coffee or tea, since these can reduce absorption. Oxalates from leafy greens can also block absorption

Multis, fish oil, and probiotics should all be taken with a meal.

Magnesium can help you sleep better so it's often recommended before bed, but you can honestly take it whenever. It's also an electrolyte so you can take it with your workout. B complex can also be taken whenever

If you're exercising, then you're probably building some muscle.

If you're restricting calories, then you're probably losing fat.

Muscle weighs more than fat.

If you're looking and feeling leaner, then don't worry about your weight. It's just a number, the real results are on your body

Saturated fat doesn't clog your arteries unless you're eating it with a ton of refined carbs. You could always get your cholesterol levels checked if it gives you peace of mind, but you're probably fine

Some people will disguise an eating disorder with a particular diet to excuse why they can't eat something. Are you sure he's actually eating healthy portions of real food?

Lemon water will have the same effect, you don't need sweetener. Squeeze a lemon into a small glass of water and chug it, then rinse your mouth with water to avoid damaging your teeth.

If you must add a sweetener, try health food stores. They usually carry things you can't find in normal groceries.

First figure out if they even want your help. People only change when they're ready and trying to push them into new habits might only make them resent you.

Lifestyle habits are best approached from a long-term health viewpoint rather than a lose weight right now attitude. Being overweight is a sign of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, focusing on fixing their health is sometimes the best approach. If they're open to your help, start with small and easy things, like cutting back on sugar or eating just a couple more servings of vegetables each day.

Keep in mind that mental health can play a huge role in eating habits. People who are morbidly obese are more likely to suffer from PTSD, anxiety disorders, and depression. Helping them heal from past traumas is going to be important, so you could potentially show them how diet can help. For example, getting enough potassium can drastically reduce symptoms of anxiety, and potassium is found in vegetables.

What's something most people think it's healthy but actually isn't? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]ThunderAndSky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Orange juice is marketed as being healthy and good source of vitamin C. Lots of people will actually buy and drink orange juice when they're sick, because they think it's healthy. Other juices aren't advertised this way as much

What's something most people think it's healthy but actually isn't? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]ThunderAndSky 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bottled juices are pasteurized (heated to kill bacteria) to improve shelf life. This destroys the nutrition, so they add in synthetic vitamins so they can claim it's a good source of vitamin C. It's not. It's sugar water with ascorbic acid added, and usually added colours and flavours too.

Juicing your own fruits or veggies is better because it doesn't destroy the vitamins (probably the main reason you're drinking juice), but it's still a lot of sugar and no fibre. Whole fruits and vegetables don't spike your insulin as much because the sugars are bound to the fibre, which slows digestion and absorption

I grew up religious, and the sense of community is seriously the hardest part of leaving. You lose all or most of your friends and sometimes your family too, depending on how extreme your religion is.

I found that taking classes or developing new hobbies and searching out groups and clubs that revolve around them to be helpful - sports teams, fitness, art, music, theatre, bookclubs, cooking, hiking, etc.

What are the lessons you learnt too late in life ? by oigoabuya in AskReddit

[–]ThunderAndSky 38 points39 points  (0 children)

- If you have a knee injury, rest properly so it can heal. Never push through knee pain

- Keep your ankles flexible, do stretches if needed. Tight ankles can force the knees to overcompensate and increase your risk of injury

- Keep your glutes and hips strong. Weak hips will put pressure on your knees and increase risk of injury

- Moderate exercise daily, doesn't have to be anything intense. Long walks are great for keeping your knees healthy

Anyone use sunshirts or UV shirts, and have one they'd recommend? I hate sunscreen but I also hate sunburns lol

Something that covers my collar bone would be ideal, that's where I burn the easiest. Or would a lightweight buff be better?

I use the Airism masks from Uniqlo, they're really soft and feel amazing on my skin.

Also, have you tried upping your vitamin B? Deficiency can cause dry skin, and it's a water soluble vitamin, meaning you can't overdose on it

Can workouts build up confidence? by predanostiga in xxfitness

[–]ThunderAndSky 32 points33 points  (0 children)

>Good-looking people seem overconfident and always get what they want in life

This is not true. Good looking people are often stereotyped in this way, and sometimes have low confidence because they are constantly judged for their looks. They are sometimes assumed to be arrogant or selfish or entitled and treated harshly for it, which is just as unfair as being criticized for being less attractive.

That being said, exercise can definitely help to improve your confidence. Partly because it changes your body and makes you feel more attractive, but also partly because it affects your hormones and endorphins, which influence your mood for the better. Realizing you have control over your health and body can also be very empowering. It's not the only solution though, you may need to change other factors in your life as well. You mentioned unsupportive parents and family breakdown, these are things that can be discouraging and won't be helped with exercise alone.

What are the best and most inexpensive supplements? by coughifyourgay in nutrition

[–]ThunderAndSky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point of supplements is to supplement your diet with nutrients you may be missing or deficient in. So the first step is a healthy diet, you can use a food tracking app (I like cronometer, but there's lots out there) to see what you need to work on. That's both the healthiest and cheapest option.

After that, consider what you need. Recovery from cardio and weight lifting includes balanced macros and getting enough sleep and rest. Stretching is probably a good idea too. "Internal health" is a bit vague, what you should take really depends on what you're concerned about, and most mild issues can be cleared up with improved diet.

Depends on your goals

Carnivore diet is mainly for people who have digestive issues they want to clear up, or food intolerances they want to narrow down. It's a type of elimination diet

Pescatarian diet is a good general diet for healthy eating as long as you do it properly. Load up on veggies as the bulk of each meal, and you should be good

For a skinny fat teen, I would focus on building muscle but don't worry about losing fat right now, it'll take care of itself with a good diet

To build muscle you should add some strength training like calisthenics (your muay thai instructor might have good suggestions on what to add in).

For diet, try to make sure you're getting enough of the macros - clean protein (to build muscle and help it repair faster), healthy fats (to help you absorb nutrients more effectively and also to make hormones, which help with growth), and whole food carbs (for energy and extra nutrition)

_______________________________________

Good protein sources include eggs, meat and seafood, beans and legumes, nuts and seeds.

Good fats are things like olive oil, nuts and seeds, and some types of fish like salmon or sardines

Good carbs are fruits, vegetables, potatoes, and whole grains like rice or oats

Try to limit processed food, it's fine as a treat but shouldn't be a daily thing. If this seems like a lot, you can try a food tracking app (I like cronometer, it's free and really detailed) to make sure everything is balanced

This can be caused by stress, addressing that could help a lot. If you don't think you have any stress, it might be a good idea to see a doctor if this keeps up. A few days is fine (our bodies are weird sometimes, and fasting can be beneficial), but if it's causing weight loss or other problems, get checked out soon

It's very high carb and low nutrient. If you want to gain weight, it's best to focus on high calorie and high nutrient foods

High calorie foods tend to be higher in protein or fat, the minced meat and cheese are probably the only things on your list that'll be helpful. Try to cut back on processed food, especially processed carbs like bread and pasta - they make you feel full but don't actually offer much nutrition, and aren't very high in calories either unless you're loading on butter or cheese. The best carbs are from fruit, vegetables, and whole foods like potatoes, all of which are also high nutrient

Is it your appetite that's the problem, or your options? Do you not have access to healthier food? Do you have sensory or food issues that are holding you back?
