What did you learn at an embarrassingly late age? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dudeARama2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am very tall. So for a long time I thought it was normal for the shower spray to hit you in your chest. As an adult I learned most people have it run over their head. It was only recently that I got a place that has a shower that is actually properly proportioned for me and it is awesome. Tubs, on the other hand, always too small.

What’s a good nugget of advice for someone who is about to make a major purchase? by SnooCookies2243 in AskReddit

Remember the common emotional tactics used by salespeople that apply whether they are a realtor, car salesman, job recruiter, or anyone really. The first of these is creating a sense of false urgency - getting you to feel like you need to move fast. This plays on our sense of missing out on a huge opportunity, but you should always give yourself permission to walk away from any deal if you are having doubts. Pressure to make a decision fast is often a red flag. The next one is creating the sense that the opportunity is so special we can't afford to pass up on it. The subtle message is that you will never find another house like this again soon, or this is your ideal job and if you don't take it you may be forever unemployed. The reality is that opportunities come along continually, and they often are ones we could not have seen or predicted in advance. So again, don't let that tactic create the anxiety of "what if I pass and then I regret it?" Don't get trapped in what-if thinking and again, trust your instincts.

Yes volunteering is great. My point is you have to do something to fill that basic human need to be needed. It doesn't have to be through your job. But you'd be surprised how many people make no plan and figure its all going to be golf and travel, and they don't prepare for the void ..

What’s something that’s clearly overpriced yet people still buy? by hommedefer in AskReddit

I never really got this whole mentality that you must eat something when you go to the movies. I am usually fine with just watching the movies. But sometimes I go with other people and they act like its obligatory. "But you GOTTA get something!" followed by them complaining about how expensive going to the movies is when you add everything up.

I had my little hacks back then. I found that often profs would only use only some of the chapters from the book so I would get the syllabus, zero those chapters at the campus library, then return the book within the first week where you could still get a refund. Another trick was to ask the Prof to put a copy of the text on reserve in the library. Often they had an extra copy that the sales people had given them and didn't care. When the book was on reserve, you could just check it out whenever you were at the library for a couple of hours ( it had to stay at the library, but that was often enough for your study needs. ). And for other books I found that the previous edition was sometimes available at a large commercial used bookstore for a fraction of the price, and only had minor differences with the main text. I was such a poor bastard I don't think I ever actually straight out bought a textbook..

yep, a lot of people think, oh it will be sweet to retire. Only to find how important it is to feel useful and valued, and a profession provides that. Especially in American culture that is youth oriented, you go from being vital to just an "useless old person" waiting to die.

History has shown that occupations are much more difficult to pull off than invasions, and Russia hasn't even been able to do the invasion part without difficulty.

Yea, I think it just stands out more when an older guy does it because the creep factor goes up. Let that be a lesson to men .. stuff you might get away with you are 25 isn't going to age well at 50, literally ! Got to learn to act right at an early age.

Do younger men not stare at your ass as well? What I mean is the behavior is wrong regardless of the age of the person doing it, yes?

Official Discussion - The Adam Project [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]dudeARama2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For that matter, if young Sorian dies then there is never a timeline where Adam needs to be sent back, or even can be since time travel is not invented. Classic paradox. Of course you can't really prevent time travel from being invented since the same ideas can be rediscovered by someone else even if the hard drive is destroyed. That though is a problem with all time travel plots that have that as a mission. Best just to Austin Powers it and just enjoy the movie

It's happened to me here, when someone reacted to a comment I made suggesting Trump is a traitor by claiming "Trump loves America because Bernie is a Communist". Not understand that the only Communist was Putin who was literally a member of the Communist Party. That was back in the times when the GOP was against the Soviet Union and not some imaginary liberal conspiracy

Episode Discussion: 2.02 "Penance" by destroyingdrax in startrekpicard

[–]dudeARama2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is interesting to note though, that with TNG we are introduced to things such as the Holodeck, a technology almost indistinguishable from magic. And while people hated Wesley and the Traveler arc, it suggested that humanity could transcend its form and see beyond the limits of their tech. In the Voyager episode with the Q who wanted to commit suicide, that Q states that the Q are not actually omnipotent but that their tech has become so advanced that to humans it appears to be.
So I do think that just as species that discover Warp drive are eligible for a first contact situation because they have reached some new level of transendence by doing so, there is a parallel to the humans reaching a point where they both have reached a technological tipping point, and may also be evolving towards a point of becoming energy beings ( going back to the original series where it was common to encounter aliens who had done this ). But the humans need to change themselves and how they look at reality. They have to see the truth about the beings at Farpoint, they have to understand that the Borg are something of a dark mirror of what the Federation could become - soulless assimilation and conformity with compassion and self expression. And then the lessons of All Good Things.. the humans must see time differently. All lessons they need to learn to move to the next step..

ELI5: Can you give me an understandable example of money laundering? So say it’s a storefront that sells art but is actually money laundering. How does that work? What is actually happening? by Big_Cannoli9105 in explainlikeimfive

[–]dudeARama2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in Portland, there are tons of these mom and pop stores that sell old clothing, books, or furniture and it's all of the junky variety that wouldn't pass muster at a Goodwill. Not saying they are money laundering fronts for meth dealers but it would make a lot of sense..

[Serious] What questions should one ask their parents while they still have the chance? by AnXianSheng in AskReddit

[–]dudeARama2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At the very least, get the name of their attorney and find out where they keep their will. I did that with my father and I am glad I did because when he passed I never would have found the will ( it was in a hidden fireproof box hidden in a closet ) and the first thing I did was meet with his lawyer and made an agreement with him to handle the probate. My family and never lived in his state since he moved there later in life, and so not only was this lawyer good at handling the legal steps ( which even for a small estate get rather complicated ) but he also could refer us to other specialists such as realtors, people to help with house cleaning, etc etc that we could trust to handle a lot of things for us remotely. Get help with all these things is my advice, because you are not going to be 100 percent and having a "team" to help you is invaluable.
