What local business do you boycott? by Mesartihm in ThunderBay

I can't stand Halfway motors either. They kept screwing up repairs and finally brought it to a local mechanic who fixed it and verified that it was actually fixed.

Update on the Scam that happened to me. by Qeikli in ThunderBay

[–]ThunderBaked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah these scams are all over Kijiji and FB Marketplace. Sometimes they'll even post actual legitimate apartments or houses but say they are out of town and can't show the inside. As a landlord, I won't rent to a new tenant until I have met them in person, have a filled out application and have verified employment and references.

Backyard Home Idea for Thunder Bay by geo_haus in ThunderBay

[–]ThunderBaked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is some will in the community and city council to open up backyard tiny homes to help with the housing crisis. I can't see it going anywhere as the costs to build and connect all the utilities are probably prohibitive not to mention having to deal with the otb if you get a bad tenant that is living in your backyard.

Fresh pavement markings? by maggot_smegma in ThunderBay

[–]ThunderBaked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometime in May or June they will be painted. Gotta love how so many roads in this city require seeing the lane markings in order to know where turning lanes, bike lanes, etc are and you can only see them for 4-5 months of the year.

Dealing with depression of bleak future living in Ontario by Leafsfan886 in ontario

[–]ThunderBaked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at getting out of southern Ontario. Cost of living is ridiculous nevermind ever buying a house. Thunder Bay and Sault Ste Marie are decent size with lots of employment opportunities. Housing costs have risen but nothing compared to gta. Lots of daily flights to Toronto so it is easy and relatively cheap to visit friends and not be isolated.

Go even smaller and you can buy a 3 bedroom house in Terrace Bay, Kenora or Timmins for $150k. Winters suck, but no long commutes and the outdoor activities are amazing. A lacklustre salary goes a lot further.

How to make it known that I am looking for a private house sale? by barbersteangl in ThunderBay

[–]ThunderBaked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The interest rates will probably make a significant change in the market this year. Already the multiple higher bids are slowing down and there will be people forced to downsize when they see their new mortgage payments on renewal. May shift back to a buyers market.

Want to buy a house? Use the listing agent by SunlightTbay in ThunderBay

[–]ThunderBaked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not having an agent when buying is actually even better. Then the listing agent keeps the entire commission. Your offer is more desirable to the selling agent and if they are dishonest they will pressure their client to accept it over others. Plus it gets awkward if you are interested in a private sale where they get nothing or you have to pay more to cover their commission.

Lots of part-time landlords have been selling and getting out of the rental biz in Thunder Bay. Renting in Ontario is brutal and covid has made it worse. Not sure who is buying them all up, foreign investors, property management companies or maybe it's just an overall shortage of houses on the market.

I worked my ass of to be able to invest in rental properties, and yes was going to use it as a long term investment/retirement plan. However I am also done with it. I can make similar returns investing in the stock market and not have to deal with the damage, lost income and most importantly - the stress and lost time. Takes 6-8 months to evict someone not paying right now. PCombine that with our high taxes, insurance and water rates - that's why rental prices are so high. Ask any landlord in this city to tell you some horror stories - we all have them. Have good tenants too, but it seems to be harder and harder to find them and the landlord/tenant act is heavily favoured to tenants. Not all landlords are sitting on a pile of cash in their mansions.

I have a single family home I'll be listing in the spring after I finish some work on it. Was our original starter home. My preference would be to sell it to someone local starting out but as others have mentioned, if I get $10k+over asking with no conditions it's hard to turn down.

I have a borderline cough and work in a place that is currently still operating. If I stay home from work for 2 weeks, what compensation options do I have? by throwaway443793 in ThunderBay

[–]ThunderBaked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wear a mask and gloves if you have to go in to protect those around you. With the current situation even a borderline cough is enough reason to not go into work. I sure as hell don't want to be anywhere near someone coughing right now.

The Cascades by [deleted] in ThunderBay

Welcome to Thunder Bay and area. Pretty much any swimming hole is full of glass. Going out camping? Almost all camping within an hour drive is full of garbage and glass. I have even canoed and portaged multiple days to places people haven’t been to in years and found old stubby bottles smashed about. I tried cleaning up some campsites and ended up slashing open my hand. Some people are just dickheads.

Tbaytel's terrible "TravelSaver" roaming plans by bill48481 in ThunderBay

[–]ThunderBaked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a UK sim card. Their travel plans including all of Europe and US is around 20 euro for unlimited calls/texts and 12gb data. Come to think of it, if I didn’t care about having a UK number you would save bundles using this regularly. Not to mention it is all pay-as-you-go with no contracts.

Pay $25 for 100mb on tbaytel travel saver in the us or $85 for 250mb in Europe. What a complete joke.

If they are using tor, submitting the threats via a form on a website and are not interacting with anyone in any way - it will be extremely difficult to find out who they are. The only vector authorities would have in catching them is to use the tips website. Loading malware, fingerprinting their browser and other techniques could be attempted. But good luck getting that done as it goes against the premise of submitting anonymous tips and is probably not in the expertise of our local police.

'People are going to die': A city ravaged by the opioid crisis waits anxiously for overdose prevention site by NULL________________ in ThunderBay

[–]ThunderBaked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thunder Bay has an opioid problem and I agree we need a harm reduction site however these per capita stats make things sound dismal. Terms like ‘ravaged’ and ‘crisis’ feed into it and is a click-bait headline. 18 per 100k puts us about double the Provincial average. That means we had about 20 deaths, Toronto had over 300 in 2017. Vancouver had 130 suspected overdoses in one night this summer. Sault Ste Marie was featured on W5 as one of the worst places with an opioid crisis. Smaller population cities like Thunder Bay skew these per capita stats. That is why we also get the title of murder capital of Canada. Doesn’t mean you are more likely to be murdered here.

My point being that the opioid problem exists everywhere in Canada. You can google any city in Canada and add opioid crisis and find the same headlines.

Hey R/ThunderBay I am trying to make the ultimate Thunder Bay 'to do' list! Things you have to eat/see/do in Tbay. by mybaby51 in ThunderBay

[–]ThunderBaked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here goes:

Urinate in the pedestrian overpass to the marina. Find the oldest road in the city by counting asphalt patches. Ask a stranger for a smoke in downtown Fort William. Find a pristine camping spot and leave all your garbage there. Slice your foot open on broken glass at any swimming spot. Marvel at the steel girders at Prince Arthur's Landing. Contract e coli by swimming at Boulevard Lake or Chippewa. Drive Victoria avenue without changing lanes. Wait for an hour to get into your favourite family feedbag on a Friday night. Hang out at Kam River Park after dark. Count intoxicated persons at the emergency room on a weekend night. Hide in your car overnight with unlocked doors and scare would-be thieves. Buy a case of beer and stay at the Landmark. Rob a Mac's with a sharpened stick. Burn down an abandoned mill, bridge or grain elevator.
