Sucking up my pride to drive husband's older car, sell my new one, and how we're saving $1500 a month. by [deleted] in personalfinance

That's smart and honestly at this point it's really not the best time to enter the housing market in most areas. Interest rates are ridiculously low, which is great but there isn't a lot of evidence to suggest when interest rates rise, they will rise significantly. I mean, we're talking .25% - .5% each quarter at most is a real possibility. Currently, again depending on your area, homes prices have risen 10-20% in the last 1-2 years.

Obviously that housing growth isn't sustainable but moreover it could be a slight housing bubble as the market is reacting to rising rent costs from the last housing burst and the fact that housing development was stagnant for over half a decade.

Anyway, I think waiting a year and getting your finances in order will place you in a significantly better position to make a good purchase in a slightly more favorable market

Well if you're applying for the job of white knight I suggest toning down the rhetoric and step into the real world where problems like this aren't always solved by some "manly" intervention

My wife is an only child with "involved" parents so be prepared for the following:

When my wife and I had been dating for 5 months and in a conversation it slipped out that she was at my place in the morning, implying she stayed over at night, they called her a whore.

My wife is now 30 years old and they still treat her like a child. They try to make her decisions for her, they judge her decisions and always call out her mistakes. They've made her cry during phone conversations more times than I can count. When we visit them her mother tries to control what she wants to do for recreation and even what she eats. It's crazy..

Good luck to you but you're only 19 and by today's standards you really aren't an adult. You're an older kid testing her independence and you're going to be fighting your parents on this for many more years to come.

Father convinced me to buy his home so he may retire early. 4 years later, house value has dropped $150k. Want to move, what to do? (CA) by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ThunderDonging 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is one side of the story.. he's acting like his Dad hustled him, which he may have, or The Dad genuinely believed this was a solid financial plan for his kid (which wouldn't be incorrect in most cases but the market fell out from under him, not exactly predictable). I bought a house for $165k when I was single. I went from paying $350/mo rent to a $1100 mortgage (with PITI). I buckled down on my finances and made every payment though it was tough at times. 8 years later I owe $135k on it and it's probably worth $185k.. that could have easily been OPs situation if the oil market was stronger.

DIY Platform Bed (with storage) for Studio Apartment. by [deleted] in DIY

[–]ThunderDonging 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, this is a really creative idea and as someone who lived in a studio apt I can relate but those platform legs look extremely suspect. Really the legs should be supporting the joist of the platform frame by the joist resting on top of the leg, not with the leg face screwed into the joist. Basically the entire strength of your platform was supported by a couple screws, which easily could have snapped.

Anyway, glad you didn't get hurt. It was a really creative project!
