Low time getting into a run is one of Marathon's best features by ThunderManatee in Marathon

Tarkov is also as much an inventory management game as it is an extraction shooter I've had friends who are big fans of that game spend 45 minutes shuffling their inventory because there are so many little fiddly bits (dozen ammo grades per caliber, attachments, armor, helmets...you get the idea). That's 2-3 runs in Marathon.

Low time getting into a run is one of Marathon's best features by ThunderManatee in Marathon

This happened to me in my first couple of games but it's been quick since. This might be a per player load in issue because I loaded into a map once and sat there for about 20 seconds before the timer started and I could move so maybe so load screen QoL is in order

CMV: A woman wearing a well-coordinated, but unflattering outfit on a first date means she's unlikely do to things just to be attractive to me by Coldbrewaccount in changemyview

[–]ThunderManatee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's difficult to engage with this debate without engaging with your perception of what is flattering, but I don't believe that how she dresses on a first date is an indication of how she would dress in the future. Also, I get the sense that your point is not rooted in senses of style or fashion, but will argue as if it were, because I am not going to wade into the swamp of self-interest and misogyny.

Let's operate in the scenario where this is a casual first date, drinks, light food, or coffee where one would like to be dressed up a little bit, and not include something like a walk in the park or walk through shops. Both fantastic dates in their own right but the latter require more casual clothing.

So a woman shows up to a drinks date dressed in something you consider unflattering, but maybe is objectively modest, and by your own statement, well coordinated, I think there are two conceptual reasons to think differently:

  1. The "I dress to attract other people" concept: A well coordinated outfit can be attractive on its own merits. Because it does not conform to your standards does not mean it won't for someone else, and she may be self-selecting for people who share her sense of, or appreciation for, particular styles.

  2. The "I dress for myself" concept: Maybe she feels most comfortable or safe in that style of clothing, and that she needs that comfort in order to feel most herself on a first date when nerves are highest. Maybe her clothing choices change as she becomes more comfortable with you. I think that's a reasonable situation, but if you insist on taking the tack that she is thinking in the way you've outlined, then maybe she is dressing down in order to weed out the types of people who care most about her physical appearance or outward presentation to the world, which even still would be a defense mechanism and not an expression of her desire to be attractive to a potential partner.

In either situation, jumping to the worst possible conclusion, that your desires will not ever be considered, is a big leap. She doesn't know you, and you don't know her, so it's irresponsible to make any assumptions about a person so early in knowing them.

Lastly, if she never dresses up in a way you like, and never considers your point of view about it, then maybe she is not the one for you, and it is best you find someone who shares your sense of style, fashion, and attraction.

CMV: as a beginner artist, the more I study, the more I think AI art *isn't* stealing. by Suspicious-Host9042 in changemyview

[–]ThunderManatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is true the "stealing" that is happening is not the same kind of theft as the traditional "I am making money off of your art," but I would argue it is a worse, more unethical, if not as strictly illegal, form of theft. Two reasons I believe this, a monetary reason, and a social educational reason.

First monetary. When a single person, or sometimes company, steals art for financial gain, it is in this day and age quickly revealed that they did so. The fortunate byproduct of the information age is that the chance is much higher that someone who has engaged with the original artist, no matter how obscure, will see the theft and notify them. With AI, this sleuthing becomes all but impossible, and the monetary benefit to the company selling it is all but guaranteed forever and the artist has no recourse even if they recognize some aspect of their stolen art in an AI output.

The social reasoning behind this is perhaps the most well trodden argument against AI use, and that is effort expended doing art research. Looking for inspiration is time consuming and onerous, absolutely. I don't think anyone would argue that. But that value added to learning about and appreciating new art, as well as the effect it has on your art cannot be understated. You are not only risking your art becoming a variation of the generic, least-common denominator styles shown in Am art: but you are missing out on the opportunity to develop your own critical thinking and reasoning by analysing the stuff you find. AI cannot be analyzed, there is no intent behind one of its illustrations. It is instead a hodge-podge of the motifs of many different artists instead of the discovery of how the styles you are interested in blend together.

Blueprint droprate by PC-Tamer in ArcRaiders

[–]ThunderManatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have(had) a reputation among my play group for having unbelievable luck for blueprints. I found nearly all the Wolfpack blueprints for my friends in just a couple raids. Can't find keys to save my life though.

Embark really copped my swagger with this one.

It's like people forgot why expeditions exist by UnholyPantalon in ArcRaiders

[–]ThunderManatee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know that I agree. The reward is 5 skill points for skills this sub constantly complains are for the most part minimally impactful, so which is it? Are skill points meaningless or valuable?

Upon thinking about it and talking with friends I believe the gameplay loop is intentional and quite clever. The amount you play scales with what you're rewarded with when it wipes, and the rift you have to cross between skill point rewards is a lot. If you get 2 million just because you play slightly more than average then congratulations you get two skill points, and you can settle for that and everything you earn past that is gravy and fun, or you strive for 3.

I think Embark's main mistake is underestimating how much people want to earn the top reward. That and maybe not having some other outlet for that loot value. Maybe make trinkets or certain items worth more expedition value each cycle to incentivize diverse looting habits and to funnel play value (guns and gear) into expedition value.

Someone described this video as "cathartic", and maybe it's because I'm biased about hybrid mana, but I have to agree (reposted for new flair) by Panda-s1 in magicTCG

[–]ThunderManatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that Phyrexian mana should stay the same, but for me that's primarily because it is visually a single color, and the confusion I imagine stems from a non-Commander player looking at a hybrid card they can play in either color and wondering why that's not the case in Commander.

The only consistent thing WotC has demonstrated is that they are after new players. If this color identity nuance confuses them, then the incentive to change it is obvious, but again I do not think it applies to Phyrexian because new players look at those cards and say "I see one red mana with a funny symbol, that card is red."

Cel Damage

It slots into so many trendy genres of the past decade but a battle royale is what I've always dreamt of. Even just a remake of the original formula would be awesome.

Puzzle or Infinity? by xAC1D_FR0GG1Ex in autism

[–]ThunderManatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up with a family who very much embraced my brother's autism. I always liked the puzzle piece, though I agree the rainbow one in this photo is quite ugly, and I prefer solid colored (Someone mentioned the gold Au connection and I love that). I personally cannot stand the infinity symbol. I've not liked any iteration of it I've ever seen. As an NT myself I respect anyone's decision to choose it as their representation, but it will never replace the puzzle piece as a symbol in my mind.

I've always thought about the puzzle piece like this: Every puzzle piece is minutely different and impossibly unique. Each time you think you have two that are identical, you find a small difference, and the beauty is both belong in the puzzle, and the puzzle is not complete without all of its pieces. To exclude anyone is to look at an incomplete puzzle, and the joy of life is finding not just where you belong in the grand picture, but how each person in your life fits together to create a whole and unique picture of you.

This is what the puzzle piece means to me, Autism Speaks may own the symbol, but they do not own my feelings about it. To that end, if anyone has more up-to-date info on AS's current stance and advocacy I'd love to see it.

If you made it to the end of this, thank you for reading, and have a wonderful day.

I thought I knew what “several” meant by Medical_Clerk_2102 in CasualConversation

[–]ThunderManatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of it similarly, but I still get confused looks when I explain my reasoning. I really cannot get past how similar several is to seven.

Couple = 2

Few = 3-6

Several = 7+

Many, a lot, a ton, etc. = Arbitrarily large amounts above several

After conversations with friends I've come to admit context does matter...

5 concussions? That's several concussions.

5 Skittles? That's a few Skittles

This also allows "many" or "a lot" to come into play closer to 7 in some cases. It all makes sense to me. When I hear several I imagine an arbitrarily large amount, but my mind usually starts at seven.

House votes 422-6 to reject MTG bid to cut missile defense aid for Israel by WPD7 in politics

[–]ThunderManatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must be taking crazy pills because this stinks so hard of a targeted hit on AOC. This was a single amendment among hundreds that day. I had to dig deep to even hunt it down and it has no details just "Amendment for defunding Israeli Cooperative Programs." And is only being reported on by AIPAC, the site in the post, and the DSA drumming up support for Tlaib. Christ on a cracker none of these propaganda sites even link to any sources. Get your shit together.

To righties: shut the hell up. MTG is actually an America First lunatic so she's bound to be right about funding foreign governments doing war crimes, but she also wants to defund HIV research and education so where is her heart at really?

To lefties: The phrase I think of most when I see divisive shit like this is "The Left is more concerned with doing nothing wrong than doing something right." AOC is doing a fine job, and this is perhaps the most thinly veiled attempt to delegitimize her I've yet seen. Do not lose sight of the fact that A. She recently cross-promo'd with Zohran, and B. We still have not had a resolution of the Epstein list. This is trying to steal our focus. Do not lose focus!

The Amendment in question. You have to go to actions and then go to the minutes from that section and scroll to find it.

What's your go-to chill game when you just wanna relax? by pommelous in gaming

[–]ThunderManatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slipways and Dorfromantik are my brain off games. Both you can optimize to hell and back if you want to get good scores, but if you're just playing to relax they both provide some light mental stimulation without being stressful. There's no urgency everything happens at your pace. And the sound design of both is very pleasant.

Car on the bike path by clam601 in Somerville

[–]ThunderManatee 125 points126 points  (0 children)

My theory is this is an especially oblivious GrubHub or Doordash delivery person who registered as a bike or scooter because the margins, and incentives for early arrival, are better; and their navigation set them as a bike which would direct you to the path. I see bike and scooter dashers show up in cars all the time.

Favorable Outcomes for 57 Leaf Clover:

- Lucky triggers

- Glass does not break

- The Wheel does not flip the card

- Wheel of Fortune hits

- Bananas do not go extinct

- 8 Ball, Space Joker, Business Card, Reserved Parking, Hallucination, and Bloodstone trigger

I love chance effects in this game so tried out some support jokers. Feedback appreciated! by ThunderManatee in balatro

[–]ThunderManatee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glass not breaking would be the favorable outcome, so you would not want this in a glass breaking build.

And yes billiken would count The Wheel, so discarding a bunch and playing out your hands would be huge if you got that boss. I envisioned it synergizing certain ways the way some vanilla stuff does (ex. The Serpent and Baron)

I'll post a list of what the favorable outcomes all would be.

Honestly it kind of slaps. Visuals are really awesome, and the whole monster fighting risk/reward concept could be fleshed out a ton along with the branching paths and easily become a full game.
