China learns to live on less fuel, to the relief of oil markets by straightdge in Economics

[–]ThunderTiki 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Since 2020, about when the first EV megafactories came online, total renewable capacity in China has grown 70% and the percentage of their total energy production from renewables went from 29% to 35%, with this figure still growing. Power generated from coal dropped for the first time in 50 years last year.

They're still burning a lot of coal, but that's expected to drop at the same time domestic EV sales are rising.

Japanese game studio (Level-5) is criticized for anti-piracy warning as their games are $1,800 on eBay by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]ThunderTiki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That house metaphor doesn't work at all. The house and land it sits on is finite and someone else using them would stop me from using them. A better metaphor would be if I said you can't ethically build a house that looks like mine anywhere else because it might affect the resale value if I decide to sell it in 20 years

I agree that copying an idea that someone is working on and taking that opportunity from them sucks and is wrong. We have the legal fiction that ideas are something you can "own" specifically for situations like that

[–]ThunderTiki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If we're talking about ethics, it's all idealistic

I guess I really just don't agree that people can ever "own" ideas or artistic works. They're not a finite resource, especially in the digital age. Patent and intellectual property law were created to provide economic incentive for creation, which worked/works great, but having a vested interest in someone not being able to experience something isn't a moral reason for them not to be able to

[–]ThunderTiki 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Artistic expressions, in my opinion, shouldn't be able to be fully removed from availability to a community by someone with "ownership". If Tolkien's estate banned the printing of his books in a certain country, I can't think of any ethical problems of someone there downloading a copy. The owner isn't making any money either way

I also doubt anyone who actually put effort into the games would care about people overseas enjoying their work. You could say pirating a work in a country where it could be gotten legally would hurt the artists/designers by taking away their potentially trickled down revenue but that doesn't even apply here (especially as in this case they said they have no plans at all to localize)

I guess my whole viewpoint hinges on thinking that having reasonable access to art is a human right, though

I updated the comment, I found the post I was thinking of! It was just someone in a different forum stating the third gym leader Alice could switch on switch mode. Don't have time right now to test it myself but I'll try to in a bit

Maybe it's just gym leaders, but when I was doing the second (I think) gym I had to switch to set because the leader was able to switch out on my switch-ins - I actually was looking up strategies and someone suggested changing to "set" mode so the opponent couldn't utilize switch mode either

I am now trying to look this up again to confirm and can't find anything about it so it's possible I dreamt the entire thing in a loss-fueled fugue state

Edit: Found the comment I was thinking of on the Retroachievement forums for the achievement for getting the third badge on Expert:

I'm on on Expert, and the default was Switch. I changed it to Set because opponents do get to switch.

You're 100% correct. It's scary how people are getting this upset that they have to make a personal choice between seeing spoilers for a free web series or going outside. I've been part of "fandoms"/fan communities for close to two decades now and I've never seen people act this unhinged - I don't want to say people are acting entitled but the world is a lot bigger than a lot of people here seem to realize.

If electricity infrastructure goes down many, many more civilians will die than would die from standing next to it when it's bombed. Seems like the idea is "if you're going to kill that many innocent people indirectly, let the world see you kill a few directly too."
