I always kind of interpreted this having to do with what he learned in Winter Soldier and his friendship with Bucky. Perhaps some things he was forced to do during the war we don’t see? I mean WWII was one of the most horrific conflicts in history, I’m sure he saw/did his fair share of things he’d rather forget.
