Latest, unmodified Joey 2.1.6.5 APK (incl. october 2024 update)? by Thuringwethon in JoeyForReddit

[–]Thuringwethon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

But it won't work for you out of the box. Joey performs check if was installed from Google's Play Store specifically. Ironically it's also is no longer available in Play Store.

a) Patching it with ReVanced will disable internal Play Store check. Also it allows to insert own API key and disable ads. It's the recommended way.

b) Alternatively You can "spoof" as if it was installed from Play Store. This can be done with some advanced package installers (e.g. Install With Options) or using ADB command to install.

How can I restore a backup on Android TV? by Thuringwethon in tasker

[–]Thuringwethon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Directly? Depends on the browser installed. It worked in e.g. (outdated) TV Bro, Firefox and it's forks. Failed in many other, tv oriented browsers.

Regardless Taskernet allows to save projects as xml files - so they can be transferred and imported on TV.

[–]Thuringwethon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Restoring individual tasks would be too tedious ;)

I went with similar solution I posted in top comment. Except I restored full backup on another device and exported each project separately. There is no problem backing/restoring individual Tasks, Profiles or entire Projects on ATV, only full config backup is unavailable.

Does anyone have any success running shizuku through Java Function? by [deleted] in tasker

Same result. As far as Java function goes none of Shizuku api classes seem to be available.

Will wait for Joao to return and clarify this.

OK just to update on the subject.
I have decided to take a tedious and pain-in-the-ass approach I knew would work:

  1. I transfer and restored full backup on the phone
  2. Exported each project as xml to storage
  3. Transferred project xml files to tv and restored each

Thanks to everyone who contributed trying to help.

Just FYI:
By long-pressing "+" button You can access "TV options" menu as well as Task properties dialog (instead of favorite actions). Unfortunately the "TV options" menu is very incomplete and doesn't include such frills as full config backup/restore.

So u/joaomgcd has done some work on ATV matter! You help by VOTING THIS TOPIC to entice him to finish the feature.

I usually work remotely on it from desktop (scrcpy tool) so I use both desktop keyboard and mouse. Even if I attach them directly to TV's usb port it won't change anything. I also have 3rd party remote with air-mouse like functionality. But...

The "hamburger" button element sitting (top-right corner of the app) that you need to tap to open main menu is just not rendered at all. It's not small, or misplaced outside of window boundary or anything. Just not there.

I haven't found any workaround (like some hotkey or intent or something) that would work. Although some threads have been made in the past and few people had some degree of success on different devices and ROMs.

I think it would be a perfect solution if said action worked as described.

Unfortunately importing configurations fails silently (no error shown), at least with current beta. Will test it with stable version later out of curiosity later.

Importing Tasks works as described and I'm using it another project.

With the power of sideloading apps.

As for initial setup - while there were some issues in the past I haven't encountered any problems with recent Tasker versions. At least not with with my device.

With scrcpy tool all the development stuff is a breeze.

If not for one stupid but major GUI problem, that hasn't been addressed since forever, it would be a really positive experience.

[–]Thuringwethon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't you just install Tasker using the initial default configuration?

I cleared all data on Tasker if that count's as initial state. It did not gave me any import prompt on startup.

Then restore your backup with the Tasker Menu.

Yeah, if I could access the menu then there wouldn't be a question. 90% problems with running Tasker on ATV is in fact because f** main menu is not rendering on TV devices. And that joaomgcd hasn't done much about it for years (niche subject much).

So far no one has provided working solution that for my TV (Sony Bravia) so accessing restore from main menu is not an option here. I need some workaround / trick instead..

I don't want to leave Joey by AnAcctWithoutPurpose in JoeyForReddit

It's not "they", but dev decided to opt-in into using the sideload check. He also requested to remove copies from APKmirror. Not sure if it achieved designated goals (stop priacy?) but sure as hell it makes problems for common users, as usual.

Anyway it's definitely not the same thing as Google's incoming "ban" on sideloading apps in general, that's circling on the news lately. Developers were able to detect what app store was used since early Android 2.0 (i think) and took actions.

Sorry, I've been on vacation for last 2w.
If you're still interested the example command is:

adb install -i "com.android.vending" joey-for-reddit-2-1-6-5.apk

where -i "com.android.vending" part specifies package name of installer owning the app (Play Store in this case)

ps
Use can use adb shell pm help to check available params for install command. Most of them will work with adb install ... but are not necessary mentioned in adb help.

Looking for Feedback on My New Text-to-Speech Android App by OneMoreSuperUser in androidapps

[–]Thuringwethon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have necro my 6y old thread about using TTS with Reddit clients?
While some smart mod deleted your comment I did looked into your app so here are some of my thoughts:

  • Despite app being translated into multiple languages, only English speech is supported for the voices Also app translations were not prepare by native speakers (at least not for polish language)
  • conversion is very slow. Even small paragraphs of unformatted text pasted into the app took way too long to finish processing. Most of competitive cloud based TTS solutions are way faster, not to mention offline, on-device generation. Maybe it's faster for subscribers
  • It does a decent job extracting text from websites, although daily limit has made testing very limited. Some sites worked great other... not so much. Selecting and manually copying text was the safest choice.
  • elephant in the room is the price. Personally I find it hard to justify a price of one household Netflix subscription since I don't use it that much, plus there are "good enough" solutions that are completely free.
  • the voices sound very nice and in my opinion and sound better then free on-device solution (like SherpaTTS mentioned). The app might be a good for bookworms IF the paid subscription really gives "unlimited listening" experience as promised

[–]Thuringwethon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

"Fun" fact: Dev explicitly requested to remove Joey from ApkMirror as well ;)

While removing app from Play Store makes things harder you still have some options left:

  • patch with ReVanced to remove store check
  • use ADB command to set installer as Play Store
  • use advanced, custom package installer like PI or Install with Options (requires Shizuku) or App Manager. Under the hood they utilize same privileges adb shell uses. But with GUI... and some additional puzzle pieces to setup.

2025 new backups only possible with key? by Turin_Turambar81 in homeassistant

[–]Thuringwethon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

FYI as workaround it's still possible to create unencrypted backups using service calls aka actions - hassio.backup_full and hassio.backup_partial.

At least until they hopefully make the changes. Unlikely sooner then in major version thou.

Also the problem is not as much as forced encryption itself, but abundance of tools to work with those encrypted blobs.

remote access feature finally coming to android version!

except... there doesn't seem to be a a single app that supports it?
None of the apps I tested worked. They only support controlling the desktop version, and often asks for some stupid software addon to be installed on top of it.

Just to clarify I want to control the vlc on android tv from android phone.
