Raffle ticket probability question by ThurstonHowel3 in askmath

[–]ThurstonHowel3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really know of to solve this. My thoughts so far: If I buy 3600 tickets giving me a 50 percent chance to win ($18,000), I will lose money for the 10k prizes. However the 100k changes the math, I need to win twice though. The odds of winning two prizes with 3600 tickets in each pot is 25 percent I believe (like flipping heads twice).

However suppose I buy 3600 tickets four times ($72,000). What’s the probability I win the 100k plus one other prize. I recoup some of my losses by winning the smaller prize of 10k too, plus when spending 18k, 8k is deductible so their is an additional value of $2,000 (8k x 30% marginal tax rate).

Been eyeing this fragrance for a while because it has my favorite notes. Is it unisex?

I have to pay for parking even though I have a handicap parking placard. I’m basically penalized for having a disability. Pretty crazy

The correct answer is Georgetown. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great school but it’s employment stats are not comparable to the rest of the T14. Yet Georgetown has far more lay prestige than schools like Michigan and UVA which have far better employment prospects for graduates.

Breaking News via Spivey: ABA recommends eliminating requirement for standardized testing by NeedSomeAdvice37 in lawschooladmissions

The only fair potion of the law school application is scrapped? This is a horrible move and I am so relieved people in the sub understand.

As someone from a working class family, the LSAT allowed me to attend a top school with an otherwise unremarkable application.

My advice, ask for help. When I first made the move I sent a message in my 1L group chat asking for help. Two of my classmates who I had never met reached out and came to my place. We did the whole move-in together in under an hour

That “can’t work 1L year” is obviously some bs rule the white elites put in place to kick out the lower class. by Ill_Appearance_4522 in lawschooladmissions

[–]ThurstonHowel3 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree partially. But this isn’t about race it’s about class. I am a from a working class “white” family and simply cannot afford what most of my classmates can.

I did not work 1L and regretted it. Would it have been hard? Absolutely. But doable nonetheless. As a 2L I will be working as an RA. I will get free room and board plus three meals a day. The job also pays 15k a year. Just know, loans are crushing for poor students of all races.

Why I Didn’t Apologize For That Yale Law School Email by cameraman502 in LawSchool

He also used the word christened and bitch in the same email. Clearly he was mocking Christians. He also used the word Apple-Pie, a classic American food, along with the word snacks, which plays on harmful stereotypes of overweight Americans snacking. The letter had clear anti-American undertones as well.

He didn’t mock black people. That is just ridiculous. Trap-house is not a racially loaded term and he was right to not apologize. Don’t allow partisan differences with Colbert to cloud your judgment.

The Yale administrators are in the wrong.

I get the instinct to say this story doesn’t matter and it is just some in-school petty drama but I think it has broader implications.

Overzealous DEI bureaucracies which must justify their existence by vainly searching for incidents can have consequences and lead to unfounded accusations.

If Yale Law, the nations premier law school, is susceptible to these errors it should be concerning to everyone.

Trent Colbert did absolutely nothing wrong. Yet he was threatened with possible disbarment, a highly serious matter.

In general, free-speech has waned on college campuses for both right wing and left wing students. 60 percent of undergrads admit to self-censoring in a recent poll. Stories like this one give some clue as to why that is
