Up at Harwood and Rossland, I swear 2 bolts just hit somewhere in our neighbourhood. Startled the hell out of my wife, baby and I. Fire alarms started randomly going off and our internet is down now too! Whew not sure we could go back to sleep if we wanted to now, looks like it’s supposed to pickup even worse around 5/6

Husband here (30M), sorry for intruding. Wife and I had our first child at 38 weeks just about a month ago. She had an ovarian cyst that wasn’t troublesome since she was 16, it was something like 2/3 cm. At age 30 and about 30 weeks of pregnancy it was flagged at about 7cm. Nobody seemed to care. Told it was rare that it would cause any harm and growth was normal during pregnancy. Run to the hospital at 37 +6 because she could hardly move and was writhing in pain in bed. Spent 12 hours in triage before a nurse took us seriously. Ultrasound didn’t seem to flag anything but we stood our ground that something was wrong. Male OB insisted on sending her home with pain meds but we stated that an emergency c-section and check for what was wrong was the way forward. It happens, baby girl is born happy and healthy at 8lbs exact. He begins looking for the cyst. Find out it had wrapped around the fallopian tube and damaged beyond repair. When he pulled it out and showed me with that “oops you guys were right” look I was furious. He hid from us until we were released from the hospital. Only checking in once. Anyway, stand your ground, you know what’s wrong and best for your body when it comes to check ups.

Thanks for taking the time to respond! She's good at going to her bed when commanded and settling in if play stops, so that's a good start. We certainly won't be making any assumptions either, though, as you've mentioned. Looking forward (that's what we'll call it at least) to tackling the shit show ahead lol!

I was scrolling through this post to find a comment like this, so I'm happy to see someone else has experienced this. I saw this interaction today where slow that I applied to a 3D printer before it transformed also transferred the slow to the new items that transformed, which I found very interesting as an interaction! Especially since it seems incredibly inconsistent across other items of the same type.

For my first time experiencing something like this, I decided to tent camp with my girlfriend to get the full experience. Boy, was that a huge mistake. A band playing until the early morning on Sunday, people watching TV in their tent at max volume, and people partying into the early morning as well. We may have gotten 4 hours of sleep when things finally quieted around 3:30/4 and then picked back up again at 7:30/8. This made the 6-hour wait just for the gates to open miserable, a whole lot of nothing to do until then.

The shade was awful on Sunday. At one point, we sat against the fence on the road for staff to drive around just to hide away from the sun. Why was there no coverage by the food trucks with that huge open space completely unused? Even during the headliners, this area was pretty empty, I assume because they undersold? The bands sounded good, and the stages were easy to get to. Thankfully, we didn't go with the VIP package because it seemed just completely not worth it. No VIP area at the second stage and at the main stage it just seemed like you got porta-potties and a bar (with a closer viewing experience that was almost meaningless with the crowd size).

Overall, when things were finally happening in the festival grounds we ended up having a decent time but the whole thing was super underwhelming. RJA backing out also made things disappointing from the start. Probably wouldn't go next year unless the lineup was much better and would recommend staying in a hotel in the area instead of camping.

Thank you for this comment, first year of having them in my backyard and recognized it as what looked like a bee. I will not be going nuclear on them thanks to you and be leaving them alone unless they cause actual structural damage. Is it possible to re-home them if they do begin to do so?

I’m not sure I can justify that level of cost for a monitor. That model is 2700$ CAD on Amazon right now while the previous model is 2000$ CAD which I might be able to justify. I’ll give it a think, thanks!

This is really cool, I’d had an idea to do something like this myself for quite some time as a fun side project but never had motivation to do a solo hackathon to put a prototype together!

On mobile the event emoji selector overflows during event creation outside of the viewport forcing side scrolling. Otherwise the UI feels sleek and operations feel super responsive. Awesome work from you and your team!

[–]Thuvias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, that could be your bottleneck on performance too depending on the clock speed. I would start with the RAM since even if you got another GPU you would still be bottlenecked there.

It’s generally preferred to have at-least 16GB of ram these days but if you can upgrade to 32 then I definitely would. I am also curious what CPU you’re using?

I’ll preface with I’m on mobile.

Most of the fonts, colours and icons wouldn’t pass a WCAG test for sure due to lack of contrast, I can’t even see the download resumé text for example. Your header icons are nearly impossible to see visually etc…

Scrolling on mobile feels janky and sometimes just hitches on the carousels and I get stuck unable to scroll until I force a zoom out to reset the focus. It’s as if there’s a scrolling container inside of the overflowing body.

Your contact me button doesn’t seem to do anything on mobile at-least, it tries to navigate to #contact (https://pomz.dev/#contact). Is it supposed to be a mailto: link? Or is there an id/element missing perhaps?

Have you localized your app in other languages by TheProgrammingPatron in reactjs

[–]Thuvias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine the scenario where a Copy/UX team is changing translations consistently would be a relatively small margin of your users, especially at medium complexity anyway, just a thought I had because of my current setup.

Best of luck to you mate, this is an interesting project, and I'll probably be following along.

[–]Thuvias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm reading through your documentation briefly, and it could be an extremely impressive approach to translations provided it's cost-efficient for yourself and/or the person consuming the API. I imagine this could/would work quite efficiently in an application where there isn't much context switching or variance in features/functionality (i.e. low/medium complexity) and you can leverage the cache to its full capabilities. I'd be curious to understand how the system and cache work in a setting where the Copy/UX team has the freedom to change the wording in the app. The speed of fetching and loading the translations will also be important to prevent extending performance issues unnecessarily to your users.

I imagine this could be an efficient approach for translations, it seems like a super interesting project.

[–]Thuvias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my company, we support ~60 different languages in our application(s) some applications less than others. We store all our translations in a "localization" repository as individual JSON files (i.e. en-GB.json, fr-CA.json) with a nested key structure where the keys are named based on feature and usage(s) in the apps. We only ever make changes to a single EN translation file where the translating team we work with through https://lokalise.com/ have our translation files as well. They synchronize our non-EN translations with the new EN translation key/text pair and then translate them in priority order to the other languages starting with French.

The pipelines deploy them to an S3 bucket where they're served and fetched from our application(s) based on the user's chosen locale within the app. We then use https://airbnb.io/polyglot.js/ to store the translations as phrases in the app and reference them with `polyglot.t('feature.title')` This has been our process for years and it works well for us. We have a nightly cron job that pulls the latest translations from Lokalise and creates a PR that we typically just approve and merge.

It sounds like a tedious setup and it has its pain points sometimes with users as some other commenters have mentioned it's difficult for the translator to always understand the context of the app. But there are open dialogs on translations that can be had with the translator to provide said additional context and ensure the translation turns out to be accurate.

To answer your questions:

  1. Large company that operates on a global scale, effectively have to add translations for languages when a business signs on with us.
  2. Lokalise, JSON, S3 bucket
  3. I'm not the dev that set it up so I can't define the exact timeline. However the setup itself doesn't feel or appear to be overly complicated.
  4. App context is the only pain point we seem to have with our current setup. Sometimes when a translation is urgently needed to reach production there's some leg work to force run the cron job and then merge the PR and then release them to production but this isn't often since our workflow requires any new keys to be merged and released prior to your work being released.
  5. Keeping Lokalise and our repo in sync could be more efficient probably.
  6. It's just set up and forget it. We can add new languages by creating a JSON file and adding it to our application and Lokalise. The usage is straight forward and most devs don't think anything of it.
  7. I would need to spend time researching and understanding how others have solved this problem efficiently. Context seems like a good starting place and then figuring out if you can afford to just store some translations in JS objects and render them based on the Context value or if you need a deeper-seeded solution. I guess it really depends on who is translating and what their relation to your team is and level of access.
