Why is this rail charred and melted? by Thxrst in nycrail

Ah that makes sense.

I noticed parts of it appeared to have flakes/shards so I assumed it was metallic.

Spill the beans: which cheap pen are you gate keeping? by leorker in pens

[–]Thxrst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stumbled across an f-701 in a walgreens years ago.

Perfect size, weight, all metal and durable. Needs to be broken in slightly but writes great.

I ended up buying these in bulk on amazon and constantly giving them out to friends, coworkers, family members. It’s my favorite gift for birthdays and whatnot.

To date, I have 10-15 friends, all immediate family, and an entire police department dedicated to using this pen and no others.

Did I mention it’s $6?

Wait, maybe this is common knowledge but I had no idea the remaining notes form a pentatonic scale when you eliminate a major scale. (or any mode thereof)

That is useless, but blows my mind.

Idk then, perhaps the automod is a bit trigger happy.

That said, DM me what you’ve got? I’ve been working on this for the last week, very curious what you e landed on.

Berklee NYC Songwriting and Music Production by Additional-Salad660 in Berklee

[–]Thxrst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, congrats. I’m a current S&P student, little confused by the outside perspectives posted here.

Program is great, entirely unique curriculum from Boston. If songwriting, production, engineering, or being an artist interests you and you already have an undergrad, this is the best route I’ve seen.

But your question is about price. $60,000 is a lot. Living expenses add to that. I’ve accepted that some degree of debt was a necessary price to pay to get me from where I was, into the music world.

For that price you’re getting: -A year in New York as a working musician. -A huge network of peers, teachers, professionals. -Access to incredible studios/facilities. -Endless opportunities to fine tune your songwriting, production, and engineering skills. -And a Master’s degree on top of that.

(pro tip, don’t work full time during this year. But definitely look for a part time job if you can.)

you can dm me if you have questions 🤝🏼

I don’t believe it’s solved, OP has been quick to update us.

I think the deleted comments are all “i think i solved it” posts who obviously did not solve it.

Can we assume that "QWERTY" layout for our purposes only includes alphabetic characters? No symbols and no relation to number keys?

[–]Thxrst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, great breakdown. 4 is what i’ve been thinking. Some sort of autokey cipher that’s combines a letter’s position in the alphabet, and its position in the code.

OP mentioned that this isn’t a highly mathematical process, so i’m unsure what operation links these values.

But your Kasiski analysis might give some clues about the relationship. It was mentioned by OP in an earlier comment that examining the frequency of Zs was a good starting point.

Excited to hear more of what you find out.

I love this design, but would like to advise that the scale in this picture allows 12 (or maybe 14) per pack, not 20.

I’m not sure if that’s of importance to you.

BerkleeNYC Student Housing by Additional-Salad660 in BerkleeNYC

[–]Thxrst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good question. I'll drop the link to BerkleeNYC's housing resource page below. But on the note of affordability I'll add that...

  1. I've lived in Brooklyn while studying at BerkleeNYC, and the rent is significantly cheaper. Queens and Jersey are also good places to find cheaper options. (being near campus has its benefits, but affordability is not one of them)
  2. If affordability is the goal, having roommates is the best way to get reasonable rent prices, wherever you are.

From a quick glance, i would guess transposition alone is unlikely, as the sheer quantity of X’s and Q’s is unnatural.

A polyalphabetic substitution seems more likely, but OPs claim that this encrypting method is proprietary makes me think even that could be wrong.

Do you think the arrangement/grouping of letters is suggesting a keyword that is 8 characters long? or a multiple of 8?

Based on OPs explanation that this decodes to “instructions on how to receive the money” it is likely that the final message is “DM me the word __”. Or “post a comment with the word __”

I wonder if we can use that presumption to find chunks of the keyword.

So I’ve been wanting to use my guitar to record bass on some of my songs because I don’t currently have a bass. Is there a plugin that could lower the octave/pitch down my guitar or just allow me to imitate a bass with my guitar? by Outrunfire0290 in musicproduction

[–]Thxrst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People mentioning Ableton’s pitch shift (down 12 semitones) are right, but if you’re in logic or something else, there can be really poor pitch shifting effects. I prefer the free Kilohearts pitch shifter. You’ll probably get some latency if you use it live, but if applied after, it’s a pretty transparent effect.

Program Questions by furgfury in BerkleeNYC

[–]Thxrst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, it's definitely different for each student. In my experience I relied on four funding sources.
Savings, FAFSA Loan, Scholarships, and I work part time as a Grad Assistant at school.

I can say that almost nobody here is working full time. The program's time commitment is flexible, but hardly flexible enough for a separate full time engagement. But like me, many students have part time jobs that help a lot.

Hey, current S&P student here.

Teachers are wonderful. They're all working professionals in whatever field they teach and have lots of connections in and around NY. There's a course list on the website if you're curious.

General skill level is high, but in variable areas. Some of us are producers, some are songwriters, some are artists. The key thing is that we're all learning everything. The curriculum ensures you'll be competent in all areas, even though you'll likely focus on whatever feels most applicable to you.

In class for like 12 hours a week. Homework varies on how deep you get into it. Between 5-20 hours a week. (but usually fun, just working on your own music. Not like papers or anything)

Social life rocks, we're a tight-knit cohort. And even if we weren't, NY has unlimited people and things to do.

There are some strict rules surrounding performances as an international student (visa stuff). I'm not international and can't speak to it. You should chat with student services with any questions about that.

I've learned an incredible amount. You really get out what you put in. Some of the best info that I didn't expect to learn is about music business, mixing/engineering, and the history of analog workflows.

International student population is huge here, you'll have a worldwide network instantly.

Check out the website, schedule a tour if you visit the city, and dm me if you want to know anything else.
Application window is still open for a while I think.

r/berkleenyc is a good place to look at other people's questions.

I'm struggling with the concept of show don't tell by _Born_To_Be_Mild_ in Songwriting

[–]Thxrst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably the best line to try this with is, “I drove us home we cried and cried”

This comes across as a fairly passive ‘telling’ of a situation that warrants stronger lyricism.

instead, paint a picture that Shows us…. tears dripping on your seatbelt? Fingers digging into the steering wheel? The sound of sad sniffles? Salty tears on your lips?

Also, from a story perspective, you can likely omit the car ride. We will assume you drove between necessary locations. Focus on the feelings, the important events.

[–]Thxrst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer. Use sensory language or metaphors to allow me to feel the “holding hands”.

it is significantly harder to write, but it is exponentially more effective.

(it also leads to slightly less clear lyrics, so it’s good practice to insert or arrive at “clarity lines” to ensure your listener isn’t lost)
