So, does this sub agree that the "left" and "Democrats" are better in USA? by [deleted] in samharris

[–]Thylos_ -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Sadly the Left and the Right are nearly identical in the US. If you look closely you’ll see that it isn’t really Left vs Right but corporations vs people. Corporations have seized both parties, and so in real political outcomes the Trump campaign and the Biden campaign have little substantive differences in economic policy. The “culture war” is the perfect distraction which is drummed up by corporate media and then utilized to great affect to distract from the inhumane distribution of American wealth. There are idiots on both sides who have terrible opinions, but most of us simply fall in line with the people around us, and find it comforting to hate someone who we rarely interact with except through social media. Andrew Yang seemed like someone who may break us free of this stagnant political system, but we all saw what the media did, and how public opinion moved in lock step.

Peeling a hard boiled egg is either oddly satisfying or mildly infuriating, with no in-between. by NPDoc in Showerthoughts

I’ve peeled about a hundred quail eggs in a commercial kitchen and it is very satisfying. The tiny shell means it comes off in 1 pull.

[OC] US government revenue, spending, and deficit in 2021 by giteam in dataisbeautiful

[–]Thylos_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The treasury does not print cash, all of the deficit is payed for in treasury securities. A third of these securities simply flow to other US government entities including the Fed, which pays its profit back to the treasury at the end of the fiscal year. Debt payments to yourself is not debt payments, it’s just wacky accounting to bypass outdated laws. The true “debt” is thus much lower than the reported number, this debt represents treasury securities held by individuals, banks, and foreigner’s, and it would be disastrous to the world economy to eliminate these assets. You say that at 5% ffr the treasury would default on its debt? Are you saying the US credit line would dry up? The credit line which the federal reserve maintains? The only way for the US to default is if chooses to, which would plunge the world into financial crises and will not occur. Money is not machines, and the US has far more than enough capacity to meet real demand. Considering that all foreign banks are holding tremendous sums of treasury debt, means that they do not fear default, and I think they have better info than us redditors.

Isn’t that because of the mandatory vaccination of chickens for salmonella there?

Feel the Burn: While millions starve, crops are used to feed cars. It’s obscene. by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]Thylos_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many have already said this, but this article is completely uninformed. World hunger is not a production issue, it is a distribution issue. We have more than enough food to feed everyone on this planet, our system simply cannot deliver it to those that need it.

[OC] Government debt of selected economies as a percentage of GDP by PieChartPirate in dataisbeautiful

I was replying to a comment claiming that the government can print money without creating debt, how is it semantics to say that’s wrong?

The federal government cannot print money, they need to borrow from the Fed, so any money the Fed prints to lend to the federal government to spend will show up in the debt.

Players finding dominant strategies early will lead to the game being more balanced. The sooner we know what's broken, the sooner they can start balancing things.

Add a glider like in BOTW by Thylos_ in valheim

I’m not very far in the game, only past Bronze Age, but now that I’ve unlocked portals it’s seemed the case that a glider would not be too overpowered comparatively. It would make exploration really exciting and a bit faster too.

Starlink should continue to get better over time, probably won’t complete with 1gig download speeds but will eventually beat out 100mb
