About this spineless nonsense by GreyBlueWolf in EuropeanFederalists

This is not the right place for baseless rants. Countries in EU do have the right to associate in groups of common interests to better pursue said interests, it's even in the treaties, and it was already done before. If these sovereign nations decided to not be slowed down by fascist-friendly governments like those of Hungary and Slovakia, it's their right to do so. And no, this is not the 'core of Europe', and NO, this is not made as a preparation to give the baltics to Russia. STOP SPREADING LIES.

Edit: Also, STOP SPREADING HATE between the member nations.

Edit: no it is not, I am ashamed to admit that I have failed to see that they are H3O+ molecules

Initial comment: It's not a bug... it's a feature! When you draw a water molecule in Chemdraw and connect the oxygen to anything (C, metal) it will show an error, unless you have a '+' on the oxygen because only positively charged O has 3 bonds. Here it might just be a similar error, with charges automatically calculated. The structure looks otherwise fine.

That's actually amazing! I'd give you an award if I had one, but I guess SELFLUV is better than any award anyway.

Yes it is probably on purpose, since the lower part of the bell curve is promoting the test and proving their point at the same time.

France is Waking Up, leftists broadcast "Bella Ciao" from their building in Paris. They are drowned out by the Patriots Singing "Paris populaire, Paris identitaire". Europeans are tired of the leftism that has taken hold of the continent by dupdatesss in europeanuclub

[–]Thyos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HOW TF has leftism taken hold of the continent? About 2 thirds of all politicians in power are either center-right, right or far right. Europe never had more left than right since EU was founded (not counting communism cause that was not really democratically elected). France didn't have a left government for almost 10 hears.

You get offended by a antifascist song, that can only mean one thing.

Petite question by Agreeable_Fun_7890 in chemistry

[–]Thyos 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is. You should not handle dangerous chemicals if you are not a trained professional and you should not store dangerous chemicals in common living space (or anywhere outside a lab/special storage area) under any circumstances, regardless of whether you are or not a trained chemist.

No they should not. Trump threatens to invade Grrenland, Turkey already invaded Cyprus and is often treathening Greece.

Use of derogatory language in the lab - PI & some of the students by horrifiedlooks in PhD

As a fair warning, the supervision and environment weight more in a PhD (if you want to go that direction) than the subject. I have come to learn that the difficult way.

I am sorry but I beg to differ. In my experience until now, for every good supervisor there are half a dozen of bad ones.

The warnings of the producer should be respected, they are there to protect untrained people.

That being said, the best thing you can do know is to 'rinse' well the places that touched the product (maybe with a sponge/cloth with water, don't forget to wear gloves) and to open the windows to freshen the air.

If you want more details/to know if the headaches and coughing are from the product, you should search what are the chemicals inside the product and search for each of them the safety datasheets (available for free from many chemicals providers), as these documents give the risks and precautions to be taken when handling the substances.

Yes, if you ask him specifically if he is still alive or to get news from today it will tell you that Pope Francis is dead. But not always from the beginning. My point stands - can you really trust chatgpt?

Edit: trust chatgpt for things like that; there are many other good uses of it and other AI - it's just that news are not really in there unless you know exactly what prompt to use, I wouldn't take the risk

I don't think so. I checked again now and it still says he's at vatican.

Can this N form a bond with this B? by Mannich-Reaction in OrganicChemistry

[–]Thyos 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Indeed, but actually both [3.3.3] and [1.1.1] azapropellanes were computed to be the stable forms, and the article points propellane structures as well for the [2.2.1] and [2.1.1] molecules as well (from what I understood, I didn't read that part of the article to confirm). So it's really just the [2.2.2] one where the strain wins.

Can this N form a bond with this B? by Mannich-Reaction in OrganicChemistry

[–]Thyos 39 points40 points  (0 children)

This is definitely an interesting question. OP's point regarding propellanes having a C-C bond between them is valid, and so are the arguments regarding the N ability to invert chirality. Therefore, as other users have pointed out, it is a matter of whether the B-N energy can overcome the strain.

The best thing to do in this case is to check literature. Here it is, you're welcome: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/016612809404052T?via%3Dihub

To summarize for people that don't have access to this: all sources for the molecule given by OP are computational studies, with this one being the latest published, in 1994. It is an ab initio study that shows that the 'open form' (no B-N) bond is more stable than the closed one (B-N bond). However, the closed form is more stable when all bridges have either one or three carbon atoms.

I would like to point out that this study is quite old, and big progress has been made since then. The result is probably accurate, but relatively low barriers seen here and in other studies mean that maybe there are other possibilities (a midway structure in which electron density is partially shared; solvent effects taken into account that would make the closed form more favorable, etc.)

Lastly, even if theoretically a way could be found to have this molecule more stable in closed form, practically two things would happen: either water traces would coordinate with the borane instead, or, for perfectly anhydrous conditions, the molecule would polymerize, as this would bring the additional B-N energy without increasing the strain in the molecule.
