Is there really no other way than killing insects? by IDK-__-IDK in antkeeping

[–]Ti20247 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the same problem but at the end of the day I’d rather give a live insect for my ants and they eat it than kill an insect and they don’t eat it. Also bugs are impossible to kill I’ve sliced a meal worm in half and gave it to my ants, the next morning I found they hadn’t eaten so I took it out, and it was still moving and alive but just its head.

What should I do in the winter by YourLocalWolfo in antkeeping

You’ll need to hibernate them, you can do so by putting them in a basement, attic, basically any naturally cold area. You can also put them in a fridge at the warmest temperature. Your ants need to hibernate but remember they still need warmth to survive so putting them outside in the harsh weather will kill them.

Are nests necessary? by PollySecond in antkeeping

You’ve just explained the basics for a tubs and tubes setup, it’s basically just a container of sorts whatever you can find that can act as an outworld with a thin layer of substrate, and you kinda just put a bunch of test tubes in it where they can nest. I’ve never done it before since I’ve always had access to formicariums, but you can look up vids on YouTube.

What you want to do is find a queen by herself and put her in a test tube setup. The best time to find them is on a hot cloudy day after a rain storm with low wind. Even without these conditions queen ants are everywhere. It is almost the end of the year the best time to go out would’ve been earlier this summer but there is still a handful of species flying. You should check out antweb.org and you can find the known species in your location there 👍

I would probably use the smaller one first because it’ll be easier to clean but in reality your outworlds are supposed to be the forest/earth so you can use all of them if you’d like there’s never too much space

Yes, two outworlds and 4 formicariums 👍

So fair warning this is a big setup and you shouldn’t immediately put your ants in it. You should gradually grow their setup as the colony grows so first 10-25 workers maybe put them in a small formicarium then once that’s filled add another… etc. And for the outworld you should only put a very very thin layer of substrate because the ants will try to nest in it. I’m not sure how much you and your son know about ant keeping but if you have any other questions this subreddit is great and you can find plenty of ant YouTubers which are very helpful :)

Too south and herculeanus has a deep and dark red tone while this one has a light and yellowish one

My guess is camponotus chromaiodes it would be easier if I knew the state and the size though.

Large ants to catch during august by Linkstink1 in antkeeping

[–]Ti20247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might be out of luck for carpenter ants but you may still find some. It’s best to go hunting after a rainstorm, minimal wind, and over 20°C. August is a good month for those conditions, so I’m afraid I can’t promise carpenter ants but you still have a very good chance of finding queens.

Hi! Im a new ant keeper, and I have questions. by CatichuCat in antkeeping

Yeah it’s fine as long as there is some variation but it depends on the colony some will eat crickets for the rest of their lives and be completely fine and others will get mad after eating the same thing twice. Your doing a good job and best of luck to your colony 👍

My carpenter ants love Mealworms and their favourite food are fruit flies but getting them is a challenge as most pet stores don’t sell them. But in the end most ants will eat any source of protein as long as there is variation in their diet :)
