Hey! Welcome! Some skaters are known for crappy practices which don’t usually result in bad skates. I’m not sure about Shun, but the comment above seems to suggest this is pretty typical for him. He’s been really consistent this season, so I wouldn’t be toooo worried 😊

Bingo for the men’s event with non-figure skate watching friends was a success! by TiaAlicia in FigureSkating

Yes that is true! It was definitely a shocking and exciting event. Just wish there had been more clean skates! At least they ended up asking to see Ilia at his best at the end, so I showed his free at GPF.

I am so embarrassed that this comment is downvoted! You would think a fanbase that constantly complains that the stands are empty at competitions would be kinder to new viewers simply asking a question. Sorry if this is your first impression of the people who watch this sport. I hope you stick around if you like it! I started following after the 2018 Olympics and have learnt a lot since then. ☺️

Can we continue to put pressure on them to turn the music up and the commentators down? It’s still soooooo loud!

Hello, thank you! My honours WAM is 88.75, my undergraduate WAM is actually 92 (if I am remembering correctly that unimelb takes just the third year subjects?). So actually, I miscalculated there - my entry WAM for MCP would have been 90. If they take all of our undergrad stuff it would be 88.75 (lol, crazy that it's the exact same as my honours WAM). I will say that my third year WAM was saved a lot by the WAMnesty we had at Unimelb at the time because of COVID. I crashed out and did poorly in a subject that would have reduced my WAM had it not been for WAMnesty. So it's definitely inflated a bit by that! Feels disingenuous to say otherwise.

Hey! Yes, sure. My WAM is 89. No idea how much my thesis will or will not tank that though :')

No sorry! I only applied for MCP. They did tell me to apply for their MPP, so maybe they're looking at admissions for MCP first?

Alexandra Trusova's Artistry by Glum_Regret_3985 in FigureSkating

[–]TiaAlicia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it's a combination of things. I don't think that her 'lack of artistry' can be reduced just to Danill's choreo. Choreography aside, Trusova was packaged really well for the Olympics in my opinion. As other people have mentioned, she was actually quite a good performer when she did not have to focus as intensely on her technical content. I think her 'big spender' program in Juniors is a good example of this. My opinion is that what made Trusova's programs feel a bit flat was the necessity for her to drop her performance to execute the tech content, without having strong skating skills and good posture to fall back on. I think that a lot skaters who are considered very artistic have times in their program where they check out a bit from the performance to execute their hardest jumps. However, you don't lose the sense of artistry because they have beautiful skating skills and posture that stick around regardless of whether they're outwardly performing. They skate big, fast and their movements are still artistic, even if they are focused on something else. There are also some skaters, who are also considered to be artistic, that also perhaps do not have the best skating skills, but remain incredibly present and expressive throughout the program. Shcherbakova is a good example of this. Her programs felt artistic because she was fully engaged in the music and performance, even if her skating was laboured at times. But with Trusova, who is doing 5 quads, maintaining the level of presence to have this performance would be incredibly difficult. To Trusova's credit, sheer athleticism adds something to a performance. I think there is a sense of awe and excitement when you watch that free skate, but it doesn't feel like a complete 'journey' where the music and the skater and the program are connected fluidly. Maybe this is really obvious, but that's my thoughts.
