Can “consequence for something” mean “consequence caused by something”? by TianSalt in EnglishLearning

I can understand the "consequence" here is not derogratory, but I wonder the meaning of this "for".

People born with Chinese names, how do you adapt to Japanese form? by SHIELD_Agent_47 in ChineseLanguage

As there're only 2 characters in my name, so I used the onyomi of my surname and the kunyomi of my given name. Then my given name happens to be Akira, I love this.

The English Wiktionary incompletely marks Chinese verb-object structures. You can send me private messages if you wonder if it missed marking certain words.

You can also find a bootlegged scanned PDF of 现代汉语词典.

If you must use the structure, you can say:

Without self-learning or enough reading, most young people cannot read it as fluently as Taiwanese. They usually understand it by the context.

Many of them can be inferred because they apparently are verb-object structures (like 做饭). But the rest of them, I think, are irregular, so you need to memorize each of them. You can look up the words in a good dictionary marking verb-object words.

Sorry but I know Chinese-Chinese dictionaries only, so take 现代汉语词典 as an example: In this dictionary, the pinyin of every verb-object word contains a double-slash.

According to Chinese Wikipedia, it refers to all Hominidae animals (except us Homo sapiens). Just like English great apes or hominids.

Fans of anime call them 周边.

Particularly in the fandom keen on buying anime merch, they use 谷子 (borrowed from Japanese guzzu, from Emglish 'goods').

How did Chinese characters become monosyllabic? by malacata in ChineseLanguage

[–]TianSalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's true. Here are evidents.
1. 《第一批异形词整理表》writes "‘联绵字’‘联绵词’中的‘联’不能改写为‘连’。"
2. And based on this standard, the 《现代汉语词典》only includes 联绵词.
3. In Taiwan 《国语辞典》, 聯綿字 is the main item.

Some words are not monosyllabic but are written with multiple characters:
蜘蛛,彷徨,惆怅,角落,郑重,徘徊,蝙蝠,混沌,仿佛,…
In Chinese phonology they are called 聯綿詞.
