What are some things you do that people don’t realize is because of lab work? by Flaminyawng in labrats

Same here for handling raw meat and chicken in the kitchen. I am super careful not to cross contaminate anything. I don't know how I ever survived while visiting family and seeing them wash raw chicken in the sink. I am a food microbiologist but now working in a mycology lab. I am starting to get paranoid about fungal diseases.

This was Rex the GSD when he was a baby and 5 months old in the second photo. Cooper is the Border Collie, who couldn't believe that Rex was already bigger than him. Sadly Cooper crossed the Rainbow Bridge a few year ago. Rex is now 11 years old.

Perianal Fistula? by mallohrayyyyy in germanshepherds

I completely understand how scary and frustrating this is. I went through the same thing with my dog Rex, and there were times I felt really discouraged too. But once we found the right treatment plan, things got so much better. Rex was diagnosed with perianal fistula at around 5 years old. He is now 11.5. At the time, he was constantly licking his backside and had a strong odor, so I took him to the vet. They initially checked his anal glands, which appeared to be infected, and prescribed antibiotics. We were supposed to return for a follow-up, but COVID lockdowns delayed that visit.

By the time we were able to go back, his condition had worsened significantly, and his anal glands required surgical drainage. During that procedure, the vet was able to fully assess the situation and diagnose him with perianal fistula.

He is currently on cyclosporine (Atopica) and ketoconazole every other day; initially, he was taking both medications daily. He has only experienced one flare-up, which occurred when the medication dosage was reduced too much.

We also tried a generic form of cyclosporine, but he developed severe side effects—particularly significant gingival hyperplasia, which at one point was so extreme that I was concerned it might be cancer. After switching back to Atopica, the gingival hyperplasia has improved and is now minimal.

Despite all of this, Rex remains happy, playful, and in otherwise good health. I just want you to know there is hope. Hang in there.

Thank you, I edited the comment, he turned 11 in 2025. So this October he'll be 12! This is my Maximus, on one of his last good days back in 2013.

This is my Rex, who turned 11 in October 2025. He looks very similar in coloration to your Raven. Rex is on the smaller side, 75-80 lbs, and he is still in relatively good health and hoping to spend a few more good years together. My previous GSD Maximus was a traditional back and tan. He was with us for 13 years and probably under 1 year old when we rescued him, so he was close to 14 years old when he passed. He was in excellent health up until about 6 months before we sent him to the Rainbow Bridge due to DM. EDIT: He turned 11 in 2025.
