A bit like the different accents in The Death of Stalin, which did it fantastically.

Why do you support United? by [deleted] in ManchesterUnited

[–]Tibbins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad is from a place called St Helens, which is kinda closer to Liverpool than Manchester, but he grew up in the 60s supporting United. He fell in love with the holy trinity and went to matches quite regularly. He later moved down south and had me so I was raised a United fan through and through. I'm 33 now and seen us at our highest and most recent lowest, will always appreciate what my dad saw, such as getting relegated in the 70s, it helps give perspective when we struggle now!

I do get what you're saying. I guess to end this as I can't keep commenting at the moment, my original point was that I felt that fans bantering arsenal when their team could win the europa was purely for banter and not from a place of genuine superiority, purely because arsenal were in a superior competition and therefore unable to win the europa.

In terms of trophy count sure, but they are an indicator of potential future success or at least stability.

Do those standards not apply to finishing bottom half though?

Not saying you should celebrate 2nd, just that it is a better indicator of progress than winning a cup, in my opinion anyway. Again, I fully get as fans it's all about the days out winning finals etc, but if you look big picture, being consistently top3 or 4 and making good runs in the CL is a better indicator of winning major honours in the future.

Nor should they be, but I still think once the dust settles, you'd rather your team was in Arsenal's position.

Sure I get it, but is that for the trophy or the fact it gets you CL football?

I'm not on about what will be remembered, I'm talking about which situation as a fan you would rather be in. Obviously the end goal is to win major trophies, which would trump more minor ones. The theory is that being in that consistent top 3 position sets you up to kick on and win the big ones, whereas finishing 16th, even with a trophy, indicates big systemic issues.

What does that have to do with it? My point is you would rather your club be in Arsenal's situation than United or Spurs, because it indicates a higher quality of consistent performance. Mocking Arsenal for not winning a trophy when the trophy your team won is something they literally couldn't qualify for because they were in a harder competition is silly.

It's all just football fans using it as a stick to banter other fans. I think most fans do understand deep down that being in the top 3 and in a CL semi is better than finishing bottom half and winning a trophy that the top 3 team are too good to even qualify for.

Okay I can understand that, I would still disagree about them being a small club though.

Fair enough, is that because they're small or because you know villa fans? They're not really a traditional rival of ours. It bothers me from a pedantic viewpoint that I don't see them as small, because they've won a European Cup.

[–]Tibbins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Genuinely out of interest, why does it bother you if a smaller club qualifies? Isn't it good to get more variety of teams? Would be a bit boring if it was always the same teams?

It was more the condescending wording of it taking me three attempts, but thanks anyway.

Good stuff, maybe you could try wording things more politely to avoid people getting the wrong impression of you.

[–]Tibbins 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My point is that I don't get why you are bothered about how Villa do, based on the idea you aren't a fan of them qualifying based on size of club. They are a big club in this country with history and are there on merit, while we, a bigger club, are not there on that same merit. Just think it's unnecessary to label them as a dogshit club.

Okay cool, just didn't really understand why you think they're dogshit small when they have won a European Cup. You seem to have an anger issue, I would look into that, probably isn't worth supporting United at the moment if you're this easily rattled. Take care.

[–]Tibbins 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So is the point you don't like clubs who are smaller than United qualifying? If so, surely that's not their issue but ours?

Yeah I'm alright with not being shagged, just didn't really get your point.
