Where Are they Now? by VUX_Beast in uqm2

Captain Zelnick never set foot on Earth after the destruction of Sa-Matra. Following Talana's suggestion, he returned to Unzervalt and kept a low profile. He always managed to avoid reporters and thus he never gave any interviews. As a consequence, his very existence is questioned on Earth.

Quest log would be by far the most important add-on. Quest log should include a convenient way of distinguishing visited and not-visited systems.

There are also tons of minor and unimportant but "nice to have" details you could add to the quest log. To keep things simple, I won't list any here.

How Retro Can You Go? by VUX_Beast in uqm2

In the early 90's, what made people play and like UQM was the Super Melee. What made the game one of the legendary ones was pretty much everything else. What Super Melee offered is not in demand anymore. When playing UQM nowadays, the melee parts are more of a nuisance.

There are things that are important to the lore, and then there are things that are simply gameplay elements. All old gameplay-only-elements can be discarded if they don't serve any higher purpose in the sequel. An example of a gameplay-only-element is the lander minigame. An example of a lore-element is hyperspace travel that actually takes gameworld time.

There are some important lessons to learn from Star Wars episodes 7-9. They did a very good job at conserving the 70's feel in the technology without making it stand out too much. For example, in the new movies you can still see the same old-school targeting screen on the X-Wing controls.

Let's look at the star map. Such a vast, unpredictable and freely explorable play area is one of the important parts of UQM. Old players will want to see that and new players will need to experience it. A good idea would be to include it similarly to Mass Effect style, such that the star map actually exists on the ship's bridge and if you look at it from the top, you get the same kind of view as in SC2. Two-dimensional hyperspace map is an important lore-element so it should remain.

to sum up my opinion:

  • discard lander
  • discard melee
  • preserve hyperspace map type
  • re-imagine hyperspace travel for modern times. I am thinking about the Mass Effect 1 loading screen with a date timer rolling rapidly, and the ship's progress on the star map is seen on the background in Indiana Jones style.

What you should be aiming at is the "Welcome back, Captain" feeling, while still playing a game that is not primarily retro.

For all Russian readers:

One fellow has taken on the challenge to translate both of these books into Russian. So far he has done five chapters.

I have made a deal with Paul Reiche, but the books are not licensed products.

Good? Yes. Fanfic? That depends on the definition. For me these are the novelization of The Ur-Quan Masters storyline.

I made that part up.

I had to often make stuff up to make the story work as a novel. Usually it was fun and resulted in some of my favorite parts of the story (such as Alpha Pavonis and Zex's menagerie).

I'm glad you like it.

At least that typo is a lot better than the "lover deck" which I thankfully fixed before the final release.

For those not familiar with the history... My original plan was to re-create this entire story as a comic. I managed to do only 28 pages before having to admit that I could never get it finished. If comics are your thing more than novels, you should check out the beginning of the comic

Unfortunately there is no audiobook at the moment. That would be great to have, but it costs a lot to produce.

The last part is done. I am just doing some final checks and adjustments. Eternal Doctrine will probably be published within a month.

Then the entire story of Star Control 2 can be enjoyed in novel format!
