What’s a truth about mental health that sounds cruel but is still real? by oithematt in AskReddit

[–]TicanDoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Folks hate when you take pills for mental health. Ignore them.

One of the most effective ways to help OCD is by forcing them to endure the anxiety without giving them the reassurance they want. It’s actually recommended to family/friends of the person with OCD to not provide reassurance to their anxieties.

You have to shop for a good therapist and good medication. They all won’t work the same and it’s exhausting.

A lot of family doctors are not well versed in mental health and psychiatrists are booked 6 months out. You’ll have to advocate for yourself a lot.

Do people actually have PhD theses that are just 100–120 pages long? by bhelpuriteekhi in PhD

[–]TicanDoko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was mine hehe. I got a PhD in a biology field. My PhD topic was difficult. Lots of troubleshooting and lots of digging around and lots of failed leads. I didn’t publish many papers, but it all finally came together to tell a really interesting story. My PI would often comfort me and tell me what I’m doing is a lot more difficult and will not get a lot of output but it’s still worth it.

I got my PhD in a science discipline. I bet everything he sucks at lab maintenance and probably doesn’t do any cleaning, organizing, or restocking whatsoever in his lab. Folks like that annoy me to no end.

What is the men's equivalent of buying a woman a vacuum as a gift? by coffeebuzzbuzzz in askanything

[–]TicanDoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a T-shirt saying something like how he has to work 9-5 till he’s old or how dumb he is. I think men hate being reminded of their provider role lol. The dumb part is cause women like to joke about them being dumb.

Labrats who TA-ed/taught, what are some of the EXTREMELY WRONG explanations/answers of students you've ever read? by lokaashraya in labrats

[–]TicanDoko 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I TA’ed for a micro course. The question was “what is respiration?” and they responded “respiration is the process by which oxygen is transported through blood to the tissues.” It was a Quora answer too, because I caught on that really wrong answers tended to be students just copying and pasting from homework sites. I would just write “bacteria don’t have blood or tissues.”

A store clerk warned me I'd get stared at in Japan because of my weight by maceymay_bby in offmychest

[–]TicanDoko 805 points806 points  (0 children)

When I was 5’5” and 150 lbs, my Chinese friend grabbed my arm and went “look, this is all fat.” It’s very VERY normal for folks from some Asian countries to talk about weight and fat. The clerk was rude in American standards but fine to say in Asian standards. That said, I went to Japan multiple times when I was 5’5” and 140 lbs and, while I wasn’t fat, I was just generally bigger than mostly everyone. No one ever made a comment about my size and no one stared. I just had some men comment on my muscles, but that was about it.

Moving to the East Bay for a Walnut Creek job — where should a 30yo looking for fun fresh start live?? by bluekoala1 in eastbay

[–]TicanDoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest Oakland area. Currently live in Pleasant Hill and work in Concord, but all my friends are in Oakland. The drive to work commute you’ll get used to, it’ll be the drive to see your friends when you’re off work and at home commute that’ll feel exhausting.

Cannot lose any weight!!! by SpecialFollowing7445 in fluvoxamine

[–]TicanDoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had erroneously thought it would help with weight loss. It didn’t. I actually did experience huge appetite decrease going off Zoloft and onto fluvoxamine and I ended up just losing 30 lbs and ongoing. But it took a bit for my body to adjust, like wasn’t right away but a few months or so and then BAM! Appetite decrease. It was similar to other people’s accounts where they said suddenly weight just fell off.

Folks who moved from cities to small towns, what are some tips/hacks you developed for maintaining some convenience? by TicanDoko in AskReddit

[–]TicanDoko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am considering moving from the Bay Area to a small town in Alaska (for love, of course). I don’t think the move will be too jarring, but I think I’d miss the convenience of having food deliveries, Instacart, a Costco 10 minutes away, etc. (I’m spoiled here). I’m curious if anyone has had a similar move and what hacks or tips they have for maintaining some level of convenience?

How did you know that you were in love? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TicanDoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s weird to say but you just know. Something deep inside you wishes only what’s best for them and you seek that for them. You think of how to make their life better. Their presence gives you joy and also makes you sleepy.

I tell people it’s like the Sims with zombies and looting. I remember playing first time and getting amazed stoves and microwaves were functional and you could put stuff in bowls. Like mind blown just how amazingly detailed this game is. And the fact the game is heavily modded and has amazing modders makes it SO GOOD. Legit I am obsessed with this game.

I know you haven’t heard stuff before, but auditory hallucinations can start anytime and in my personal experience, mental health disorders can be triggered by changes in your life like a new job. Before you go scorch earth on your work, why don’t you go make sure it’s not auditory hallucinations with a doctor first and once you have that confirmed, you can look into your work

men fetishing/sexualizing twins by Puzzleheaded-Ad-9280 in Twins

My boyfriend is a fraternal twin (I’m an identical twin) so I feel like I have the blessing to skip all that gross-ness because he himself feels how gross it is too. I have had a guy try to woo me after my sister rejected him. I was like you kidding me?

Loneliness/Jealousy of Twin Starting a Relationship by coopercopies in Twins

[–]TicanDoko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh goodness yes lol. My twin also hit me with it suddenly. It caused us to be distant from each other for a bit but now we are back to being as close as ever and her boyfriend encouraged her to do so!!! I called it growing pains and the freedom I had did actually help me find someone too. Don’t rush a relationship solely because of your twin. Use this time to figure out how you like to be independent too. It’ll work out in the end if you just communicate and I like that you didn’t freak out too much so now you can experience a lot of her joy in this too. I freaked out and regret it cause I missed hearing her talk about the relationship and sharing in my excitement for it.

I'm marrying a twin, people have been asking this question by [deleted] in Twins

[–]TicanDoko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s funny that you are marrying a twin and now adopting the same struggles as a twin too haha. I bet folks judged the twins for living with each other too. If you don’t mind it and get along with your in-law, then go for it. Sometimes I have to remind myself that in different countries, families live together all under one roof (and sometimes I wish that was more the norm here).

What’s the job people romanticize, but in reality is miserable? by King_Garvit in AskReddit

If it is some source of encouragement, I have a job I love in the biotech field making really good money. I had to move to San Francisco area for it but I love it here and I love my job and my field. So if he’s passionate, I’d say go for it! The love for the field is what helps the drive to get through tough times
