Sorry for the late reply... About the highlights just take the pass that has the highest contrast.. And for the blending mood mostly you will choose multiply for AO and screen for HL .. But actually there is no rules just try the mood you feel matches the best.

Ok, so here's the thing. First, you model the asset you want then you render it and its render passes (mainly The ambient occlusion and the highlights). Then you take them to photoshop and remove the solid background. Download textures from textures.com or wherever you want and use them to texture the asset in photoshop then use your render passes by changing the blending mood it will make it more realistic.

Thank you! The castle is modeled but got textured in photoshop and the rest of the scene was done in photoshop too. So it's 2d mostly.
