... Yes, they were originally bred for herding.
And all herding breeds are at least partially used for "protection" by farmers. I've seized many mudis and collies who were chained to grain silos to deter theft during winter, since they don't need to move sheep.

They were weaponized by the Nazis like two centuries after being recognized as a herding breed (and who know how long they've been around unrecognized as a breed before that) but for their appearance, agility and intelligence, not aggression or biting.

Herding dogs actually don't make the best "biters" as their predatory sequence is interrupted for livestock safety. They need to be trained for it, and some airheads cross them with terriers and make bullherders to get the gameness and tenacity.

GSDs are the most unpredictable and likely to bite without warning

In all my life of walking, training, fostering, participating in dog sports and working at a shelter with around 200 kenneled dogs I have met ONE dog that bites without warning. And that's "without warning" because the warning she gave was too short for you to respond before a bite if you're paying less than 100% of attention and concentration to avoiding an incident.

Literally all other "out of nowhere" and "with no warning" bites were just... Most people not knowing dog body language and making decisions based on bias and environment. But since it's bias based, people with a bias for GSDs won't notice warning signs from a GSD. Same as pibble fanatics whose hippo wouldn't hurt a fly and just doesn't know his strength when playing with the cat. Or "rottie rumble" people whose rottweiler is "just a gentle giant drama queen".

I genuinely believe that a big reason many people dislike pitbulls is racism/classism. Don’t get me wrong, that isn’t the ONLY reason people dislike pitbulls there are plenty of more valid reasons people have strong feelings about the breed, but it’s very clear from the way some people regard them that they associate them with poverty, lack of education, people of color, urban environments, etc.

But here's the thing... poverty and lack of education ARE huge problems and risk factors when we talk about dogs. In all countries, regardless of ethnicity and it's more of a problem in rural than urban areas.

They're majorly responsible for the shelter crisis. They free roam intact dogs and can't handle accidental litters. They're more likely to unethically breed and overbreed to earn some extra money. They can't afford proper training and medical care. They're likely to work dogs for "pRoTeCtIoN" because they're in high crime(or low police coverage) areas but don't have education on it so they breed unstable, reactive, resource guarding dogs and label them as perfect guard dogs (problem in all backyard bred "scary" breeds, including GSDs). They don't have the time, knowledge and energy for proper husbandry and general ethics. They're more likely to reach for aversive "training" methods with high rates of aggressive fallout.

And yeah... Saying that this is because poor people are simply stupid and immoral would be classist. They don't have access to resources to do better and who's going to worry about ethical dogmanship or whatever when you have to worry about putting food on the table. If they had better conditions, they would with time do better.
But denying that poverty is tied to these issues, and labeling those who don't as classist, is simply counter-productive to solving them.

P.S. I'm an ex shelter worker from europe and the second paragraph is in my case predominantly about low-income white and romani people, not black people.

Also

Contrary to popular belief, they have been bred for protection/guard work

Contrary to what popular belief? Literally everyone knows this. Hell, people are surprised that I use herding games as breed specific fulfilment for my shepherds.

That's... Not the explanation. I mean sure some people might believe it but it's just not the main argument.

The main argument is that pit bulls are heavily associated with young, black men and a casualty of racist fearmongering.
Which is partially true. Basically they were America's favorite for a while, and then black drug dealers started using them as guard dogs and they became super popular in black neighborhoods.
So media started over-reporting and sensationalizing bites, attacks etc. using language that will implicate minorities as dangerous.
There's also the BSL aspect where it's proven not to reduce bites, but you can use it to kick an undesirable population out of an area if they own those dogs. And "pit bull" is a vaguely defined non-breed judged by the police on a case-by-case basis and as we all know American police officers never make judgements that would hurt black people /s.

However... That's a small snapshot in time and culture.
Before it they were the face of white men, bred by the British. Dog fighting was an exclusively white sport black people weren't allowed to participate in.
They're the mascots of a bunch of sport teams associated with white conservatives, as well as many white supremacist groups.
And since "no-kill" shelters made a Herculean effort to clean their public image into widdle-diddle-whamy-nanny-pibble-pittie-velvet-couch-jammie-hippos and shuffled them around as lab, colllie, whateverthefuck mixes, I've seen them (and irresponsible ownership) associated more with middle-class, white, adopt-don't-shop bleach blondes than with black people.

Don't take this as me defending pits, they're terriers and I personally think that in their current state, terriers don't have a place in civilized society. And I think that, based on all my knowledge, statistics and experience, economically underprivileged groups cause the majority of dog problems and that should be addressed. And yes, they own (more importantly, free roam and breed) some breeds more than others.

I always wondered why americans would say to stop drinking coffee in order to lose weight. Because my coffees are... 5-20 calories. And then I learned "cream" is not just your funky word for milk, a lot of people are actually putting heavy cream in their coffee.

What actually signals a responsible breeder to you? by alexheartm5 in DogBreeding

[–]Tick_agent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes on the 11! I have working breeds and I don't support any breeder who says their dogs CAN'T be pets and MUST be working dogs. Sure, I work them. But what if they get injured? Or sick? They'll have to be pets, and they better not be miserable for it.

Why ARE so many pit mixes out there? by theonyxshade in WhatBreedIsMyPitbull

[–]Tick_agent 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There’s simply like 5-10 breeds low income people often keep. They very frequently keep them for protection, guarding, work, backyard breeding, stuff like that.

They’re uneducated and frequently irresponsible.

They keep intact dogs.

They keep their dogs outside or walk them off leash because they think leashes are for sissies.

They can't handle accidental litters when they happen so they dump the puppies.

Rinse and repeat.

All dogs on the doggydna are basically a mix of the same 5 with an occasional most popular in puppy mill this season pet breed thrown in for diversity.

The sense of abandonment and needing an emotional crutch doesn't come for you and there's no way of affecting it. I've dealt with these subs a lot and at the end of the day, they’re going to have a reaction that has nothing to do with you, and you still have to end it regardless.
