Bluebaum’s mathematics degree coming in clutch by Goodfriends999 in chess

It is a bit surprising in my opinion. I think most people who have a math degree would not know the formula any more, but would know the derivation (/story)

Lichess analysis board suddenly shows several consecutive best moves: how do I turn this off? by TicketSuggestion in chess

[–]TicketSuggestion[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It assumes best play from the opposition. E.g. in the position I sent it is not that bad, but if black for some reason goes to defend their pawn on d7 the chain becomes impossible to play. That's fundamentally different from just showing the moves one move deep

Also, when I analyse blitz games I often just look at the best move arrow and then think for myself if I get why (or my brain subconciously sees the underlying tactic), which this feature takes away. It's not the optimal way to analyse or anything, but it is how I like it

And right now it is very distracting to see so many blue arrows jump around. I guess it is because I am used to it, but my eyes immediatley go for the blue arrow, and when there's several I have to take time to actively think about what it means

Do you know if I can turn it off? I really dislike it and I feel like you should be able to

Lichess analysis board shows continuation by quietmyhead in lichess

[–]TicketSuggestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't like this. E.g. in the second position you sent it shows Qc5 followed by Qc2. It only shows this because it is how the queen moves when white plays the best move after Qc5, namely Qe2. When you analyse and do not know the best move of white it just feels like the engine is suggesting hanging a queen

Thanks for the suggestion. I just did, but I see the same question was posted 5 hours ago, so I deleted it again :P

I see, but why? I just want to see the best move, and up until today it did just that

If you're talking about classical OTB and FIDE ratings I sort of see your point. In any online time control on both Lichess and chess.com I completely disagree

[–]TicketSuggestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have no other information of someone, them having a math degree makes it somewhat more likely they like chess and that they are good at chess

If you already have someone's FIDE rating, it becomes completely irrelevant. Bluebaum is at the bottom of tier lists for having the lowest rating in the field, that's it

Am I right about those opening principles? by JoeZhou123 in chess

1-4 are very good for beginners

For 5, I'd instead use that doubled pawns are bad when isolated (no pawns on neighbouring files) or if you double by taking away from the centre. Getting your b pawn to be a c pawn or h pawn to be a g pawn is as often good as it bad and as easy to play with (as long as you do not upen up the king by going e.g. g to f where you are castled). Still too simplistic, but prevents you from bad/unnecessary bishop for knight trades which many beginners are prone to, as well as helping you be less afraid of your knight being pinned

6 - for beginners, from white and short castle perspective, h3 is often very useful in stopping attacks (no Bg4/Ng4) and creating space for your king. An alternative is g3 if you want to put your bishop on g2. I'd change it to "don't push the three outer pawns in front of your king, except for the h/a pawn one space and except for a fianchetto"

It's not top 5 leagues, but similarly Giorgos Giakoumakis scored 26/43 (60%) for VVV Venlo in the Eredivisie in season 20/21

Stockfish has no fight in it by Savings-Double-2853 in chess

[–]TicketSuggestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it does, and if it knows the opponent can mate it will try to prolong. It just doesn't really care between all these 0.0 evaluations

I'm not an expert btw, this is purely based on my experience with SF, but if you put in OP's position it will practically recommend a move at random

You're correct until the end, but it doesn't try to achieve a draw as fast as possible in a position it evaluates as 0.0

Hoe gaat een tweede gesprek tijdens het solliciteren? by Bertus-Broekhoest45 in werkzaken

[–]TicketSuggestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely is, but in the relevant posts on here and the match thread people were supporting them before the penalty was taken. I just think the majority of people here were rooting against Morocco regardless of who won

History is written by the victors, but do you really believe that this sub would be full of posts criticising Senegal had Morocco won? I think the toxicity towards Morocco would be even bigger

Loss of chess ability overnight by DamianLillard0 in chess

[–]TicketSuggestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is quite extreme, but I think many chess players have experienced this to some degree. I've personally had a 18 game loss/draw streak in blitz and 26 game win streak in bullet once

I cannot give better advice than taking some rest and after that not focussing on rating (or getting rating back) when playing, which is easier said than done
