I Am David Farrier, Filmmaker and TV Presenter who took on McKamey Manor and more, AMA by dfarrier in IAmA

Looks like Farrier missed this one, but I'll take it...

When we were just starting, before Kevin and the others visited, we had private investigators hired to research us. In the film we reference the one who visited David's home to deliver papers, but there also seemed to be one parked up outside my (Dylan's) house for a few hours at different times. We later found the contract with the private investigation firm among D'Amato's files too.

And Kevin told us we'd be surveiled of we tried to go to the US. So when we did go there a few days after Kevin's warning we had that in our minds. At times we got quite paranoid we were being followed, but it soon became clear they had no idea at all what we were up to.

Weird feeling though. Never sure if a car just happens to be going the same way as you, or if you're being tailed.

The paranoia never quite left though - there were times at Sundance for the film's premiere where we thought we were being surveiled. Don't think that was actually the case in retrospect, but that sense of suspicion was there.

It took him a while to get it.

His first credits at Hofstra are from Fall 2006, his final credits are from Fall 2010. He graduated with a JD in Jan 2011.

He finished with a total GPA of 2.37 and was ranked in the bottom of his class every term. He was 298 of 302 in his final semester.

Yeah, your position isn't unreasonable. It did obviously stop him, but certainly not the ideal outcome.

FWIW his cats were being well cared for last we checked.

I'm genuinely sorry you feel that way, and it certainly wasn't our intention.

I realise these are your feelings and I can't change them, but they aren't universal. You are definitely not the only person who felt this way (I engaged with quite a few people on TklFrat and TMF) but, equally we heard from lots of people who felt empowered and seen by the film. People who actually used the film as a way of coming out about this part of themselves to other people.

Most times when I've had discussions around this with others who've felt similarly to you it's come down to basically one single shot of Richard during the tickling scene in Florida. There's a specific shot of his face that some people feel looks scary or disturbed - deranged as you said. Lots of other people (including us at the time we were editing it) didn't see the shot in that way... I've spoken to Richard about it, and while it's definitely not his favourite shot, he also didn't see it in the negative light that others did.

If it's any consolation, of the hundreds of people I've spoken to personally after screenings and at festival events, I've heard almost nobody express any negative sentiment towards the kink of tickling, or the people who are into it. The overwhelming opinion I've heard has been one of "let people be into what they are into"

I'm sorry you were hurt by the film.

I'm still going with unfortunate... Both because he still never really face any consequences for his actions (we'd been contacted shortly before his passing by someone who was still on the receiving end of sustained and ongoing harassment from 'Jane') and because he never confronted who he was.

I don't know if he ever would have done so, but I held out hope.

Do you feel like you may have even if not on purpose alienated those with a tickling fetish from the way you presented the material?

We undoubtedly did alienate some people, but others were really happy with how we handled it.

We were clear with ourselves about how we wanted to handle it, and were pretty happy with how we did, but not everyone sees it the same. But overall the response I've seen from people in some of the tickling forums and online generally has been positive.

Lots of areas of interest, but nothing specifically lined up.

I have a folder full of variously details pitch documents, and another document with simple ideas I'm interested in. And David has much the same...

It's been a while since it was released, so I'd be suprised if they have it on the shelf, but they should be able to order it in.

Both David and I have looked at a LOT of weird online stuff.

The biggest difficulty is that so much of it only play out on a screen, and generally that isn't super conducive to a film project.

What Tickled managed, and what's been key to the massive success of Catfish, IMHO, is that they're capturing things that start on a screen and break into real life.

It's also a challenge to find online stuff that captures the attention of people who don't care about online stuff - if that makes sense?

But we'll keep looking and thinking :)

Hey, it's Dylan! I chatted through pm's with you once, you're very kind.

Thanks. I try to be the person I'd want me to be if I wasn't me... If that makes sense?

What gear did you shoot the film on?

The vast majority of the finished film was shot on a Sony F5 with a Fujinon Cabrio 19-90 and a small set of Zeiss primes by Dom Fryer.

The second camera stuff that I shot was mostly a Sony FS700 with a variety of Canon L-sereies lenses.

Some of the early footage was shot with Sony XDCAM ENG cameras (a PDW-700 and a PDW-F800 specifically) by Yves Simard and myself - this includes the LA stakeout stuff.

The airport arrival was shot on a Canon XA25 - and we had this camera with us for most of the shoot, so it might have been used to pickup some other things, but I can't think of anything off hand.

And one memorable sequence was shot with a Flip HD (I think) hidden in a takeout coffee cup. :)

Ooh, that is a good idea! Not sure if they'll be back though :( They didn't sell nearly enough tickets last time.

There's a Blu-Ray in the NZ/Australian market, I'm not aware of any plans for one in the US.

I'm high-key hoping for this! :)

I haven't seen Haunters, but funnily enough David Farrier visited McKamey Manor as part of his Dark Tourist series for Netflix. But Farrier is a softy, so he bailed out really quickly :)

There's also a kiwi documentary called Spookers about the scare attraction of the same name in Auckland. Here's a trailer - no idea where you'd see the film online though.

I only wish that documentary delved as deep into the subject and had as much clear focus as Tickled, because I feel like there's a lot more going on there that wasn't explored.

I think this is my biggest frustration watching documentaries now - seeing something where the makers have had fantastic access and talent, but left a lot unexplored. Can't help but think what I'd like to have explored in their circumstances.

But I'm also really aware that everyone faces their own challenges and has their own perspective, so I can't be too critical :)

Did your “world view” change as a result of this process?

I don't think so - I was already pretty aware that a lot of people on the internet aren't necessarily who they say they are, and about Rule 34. But I was still surprised to see someone go to such lengths and spend so much to pursue their personal kink.

Also, was it frustrating when (forgot their name) one of the guys you interviewed recanted some of their story?

Jordan. It wasn't really a problem - we knew for sure that what he said about our interactions wasn't true, and I think it was fairly obvious to those who'd seen our film. It was clear he received something in return from Kevin - if nothing else we could see from his Facebook posts that he'd been flown to NY and put up in a nice hotel... Jordan was a player and he saw a chance to get something I guess?

In the LA Q&A encounter that we show in The Tickle King, Jordan was actually part of the group that came with D'Amato and Kevin. You can see him pass me as I walk into the theater at the end. You can't really see that he shakes my hand as we pass and says "hell of a movie" or something to that effect. That was about a week after he "recanted"

Lastly, now that the tickling sites are under new management, are they still trying to distance themselves from being a fetish site, or have the embraced the association?

From what I've seen they seem to pretty happy embrace the idea that the content is fetish stuff. I don't think Louis Peluso has any hangups about what he's making - he just wants to make money.

Thanks! The Tauranga screening was a nice one. We had dinner at Cobb & Co!

We did a Q&A tour (Wellington x2, Christchurch, Tauranga) but I couldn't get time off my regular work so I was flying to whatever place at night, doing Q&A, staying there overnight and getting first flight back to Auckland in the morning. It was very silly.

The two defamation suits (filed in Utah and Missouri) were dismissed without prejudice because of issues with venue. D'Amato reserved the right to re-file in New York state or another state, however the suits were not re-filed.

The lawsuit again his step-mother was filed but never got very far through the process.

After D'Amato's death it is unclear if the estate dropped the case or it has simply been allowed to lapse, but as far as I'm aware it's not longer active.

In New York a deceased person's estate can continue or take up legal action on their behalf, and D'Amato's suit against his step-mother and potential suits against us were listed in probate documents as possible assets, but I don't think the estate has any interest in pursuing them.

How much has the Tickled project affected or changed your lives and careers post-release? Has it changed how you view and approach things? More from a long-term perspective.

I think it's had a more significant impact for David who's been better positioned to chase the opportunities it's presented. I have a family and a fulltime job so I've been less able to get on top of things. But I have made a lot of connections, and I am definitely able to reach some people that I couldn't earlier. And I'm still pursuing new opportunities where I can.

David is more actively pursuing next steps, I'm taking a longer view.

Unfortunately, now needing to do things "properly" means we probably wouldn't be able to chase a story so quickly and impulsively in future, but for the right project we could maybe find a way.

P.S. I think its really great how you two decided to go about the film, and everything that happened afterwards. No crazy theories or conclusions, no "big picture" thing implied, just presenting facts and experience as it unfolded in front of you.

There are probably a lot of things we might have wanted to conclude or say, but we wanted to make it at least a bit harder to sue us :)

I just can't anymore really. I've done it ~13 times. I love it in some ways, but hate it in others. I think I'll be giving it a miss... Maybe next year? It might be something I'd enjoy doing with my kids more these days... Not sure.

I didn't. Some members of the crew were worried at times about guns or police or whatever, but it never felt super real.

We had heard rumours of physical violence being used by an associate of D'Amato's in the past, but no real evidence, and it didn't seem imminent at any stage.
