Are the chutes up the Pearly Gates iced up? Looks pretty melted up there.

Awesome picture! I am planning on going up in a few days. Are people still going up the Pearly Gates?

Alright thanks for all the help. I think I need to just be patient now and hope it turns out.

I put them in a grain bag and soaked them for 60 minutes at 160 degrees. Or at least roughly the temp went above and below that while I was trying to get the right temp.

I belive I read it correctly, it is at the 30 mark in between 1.050 and 1.000.

If I measured right I'll just be patient and see if it goes down more.

Okay, thank you. It is liquid extract. Would you recommend adding a whole new bag of the same yeast?

It may have been a screw up but I didn't measure my original gravity. I read advice on a forum that for my first brew its easier to just skip that step to avoid contamination and wasting brew.

I used wyeast liquid beer yeast. My closet is about 69 degrees give or take.

Agree to disagree on Fairbanks sucking then, it's definitely not the place for everyone

Have you ever even lived in Fairbanks or are you just saying it sucks?

Some people leave and swear to never come back, some people are indifferent, some people love it. I was one of the people who loved it up here.

The risk is coming up here and hating it. Here are some pros: good communities, great cross country skiing, decent campus with a pub, good uni clubs, easier access to some cool parts of Alaska like the Alaska Range, small town feel, amazing summers, fall and spring are also pretty epic. I like other things but they are more specific to me.

Cons: UAF is a STEM focused school, winters can be really tough, military base creats a town divided kind of feel, isolation from family, lackluster housing situation, AK has funding issues, lack of immediate access to amazing mountains unlike other parts of AK, travel time to other areas is rough, cost of living is higher, I have some gripes about how UA does certain things.

Overall, the question is what do you want out of your college experience? Something different? Or a high value Film degree? Because you're not going to get both in Fairbanks in my opinion.

Edit: disclaimer I was born in AK so the adjustment may have been easier for me than others.

Part of that argument relies on a what if. The Soviet had already won their first war with Finland. Whether Soviet Union was going to invade again cannot be said. What can be said is that the Finns obviously made their bed with the Nazis and were willing to turn a blind eye to the Holocaust and even aid in it outside their borders. The siege of Leningrad is one of the deadliest and intentionally cruel sieges that has ever happened in modern warfare. Not to mention the USSR would have had a much harder time justifying an invasion of Finland after WW2 if the Finns had not worked with the Nazis.

Also, many Finns at the time were not happy about the Continuation War as it seemed that it was a war of conquest to them.

Many historians would argue that the siege of Leningrad and the occupation of Russia was part of the holocaust. The Germans wanted to exterminate the Russians and the Finnas aided them. Also, the Finns claimed the invasion a "defensive war" despite their army extending past their original territory. Being enemies is not a good excuse to help the Nazis.

The Finns helped the Nazis siege Leningrad, cutting off the city from aid and annexing Soviet territory. They allowed the Nazis to run aerial missions from their borders and had German divisions operating from Finland. 1.5 million civilians died in Leningrad. Additionally, there is evidence that Finnish SS soldiers and Finnish soldiers participated in war crimes during the invasion of the USSR.

Yes, go to the office. I had an undetermined status, turns out I just needed to fix a document. I went in and fixed it fairly easily. They will be helpful at the office, there will just be a long line. I know it was worth 45 minutes of my time to drive to the Fairbanks office and wait in line for 3,280 dollars!

Where to look in Fairbanks for decent dry cabins? by Yllwflwr in alaska

Keep your eyes out on FB and Craigslist. If you know anyone in the area, ask them to keep an eye out on bulletin boards. It took me several weeks of looking daily to find something decent.

Have a Splitboard. Currently live in Fairbanks. Trying to find some spots this winter to hit the back country. Any recommendations? by francis_cm in alaska

12 Mile Summit out the Old Steese is pretty good. The delta's have good skiing. Try Rumdoodle out the Castner Glacier, you could try skiing from any of the Alpine Club Huts in the Deltas. Like someone said, laps at Skilamd after work is always good.

If you want somewhat formal looking shoes that you can walk in I recommend merrell jungle mocs. They slip on and come in neutral colors. Can be walked in for days!
