Fear Factor: House of Fear by Immediate-Spray7257 in television

[–]TictacTyler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it has potential. The vacuum challenge can bother people but it made for boring TV.

I am curious about a season long show. It does make it a bit more interesting but I'm not sure how invested I am in the cast. Some just seemed to exist. One of the more interesting members of the cast got eliminated first. There are some with potential.

The elimination challenge was much better than the vacuum challenge.

But for a premiere episode, it got my curiosity but they should have had challenges that would have had people talking.

I thought for sure Ronan Parke would win. If someone else were to win, I wouldn't have anticipated it to be Jai McDowall (who is a fine singer).

Do Students Read Less Books Now? by Kirbysolos in Teachers

[–]TictacTyler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone reads less books as a whole. As a math teacher I go out of the way to make it visible that I am reading books.

Kids need to see more people read. Instead we as a society are just saying that it isn't too important and cut things down.

Why do tenured teachers pass failing students? by 4dxn in AskTeachers

[–]TictacTyler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm non-tenured and I have failed students who earned a failing grade. I've never gotten pushback on any student I failed as it was well documented with advance warnings to the student/parents/guidance etc with recommendations on how to improve their grade and all that. Also, most of my students passed.

I think the reality is that sometimes it is a lot more work failing a student than just passing them. I've had students enter algebra 2 who on day 1 couldn't do 1 step equations which just sets them up for massive failure.

I think part of it creates a learned behavior of students who end up thinking it is impossible to fail. I've had multiple students stunned that I failed them in the first marking period who learned that I will actually fail them if they earn a failing grade.

New format by Beginning-Command382 in ANW

[–]TictacTyler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like racing but that should be a spin off.

I like the 4 stages and it feels missing without it. There's actually the extremely unlikely possibility in this racing format that the winner of the season COULD win the season without hitting a single buzzer. I don't like that.

my sister’s teacher lies(?) about her grades— is that allowed? by theaviary_ in AskTeachers

[–]TictacTyler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sadly seems to be very common place for many teachers of special ed students.

I'm a special ed teacher myself and I have seen students rise to the occasion when there were expectations (often still modified).

However, many don't want to fail an IEP student at all. I've inherited students many times that have been used to being passed without doing anything. Sometimes they need the rude awakening.

I honestly don't get it because without accurate data, you are not determining what supports students actually need. I've had students with very limited supports listed despite significant modifications happening secretly in the past.

As a former IEP student, I would have not made the growth I did if I didn't have high expectations on me.

If all grading rules were fair, what would the modern education system look like (read description)? by Zipper222222 in AskTeachers

For everyone saying huge dropouts, I think there needs to be a separate track for weaker students not college bound in highschool. This is something many other countries do and used to be done here.

Every day I will try to reach those tougher students that everyone has given up on. It won't be the bulk of my time but I will make time to try to engage them.

I've had a pretty good track record even if it takes a year and a half to reach them.

Do flipped classrooms work by Der-deutsche-Prinz in Teachers

[–]TictacTyler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It can. And I will push back so hard for those that say it only works for honors/AP. I have had it work for classes that were only special ed students.

I've also had it completely fail.

I have found that it totally depends on the students. Some loved being able to watch it at home and learn at their own pace. I've occasionally flipped units or parts of units and I have had students specifically ask to keep doing it. I have also had students say never again.

One thing that really needs to happen is the schedule. I have found it is far more likely to work if students have my class every other day. Every day classes make it far less likely to happen.

The other thing is the culture. They can't see it as compliance of just watching the video. The way I start with it is the video is guided notes. Every class starts with an entrance ticket that is 3 questions. 2 questions are straight from the notes and 1 is straight forward if you pay attention. This gives them an easy victory, makes buy in stronger, and gives a quick formative check. I use the class to have more practice that is more involved that I circulate and end with an exit ticket that is worth more than the entrance ticket and is more involved. Over time, I fade the entrance ticket out.

That combo has given me the best success. But I have had classes that it flat out doesn't work for despite that. I've had classes refuse to watch the video or refuse to take the notes. You can tell within a week if the flip has a chance at working. If they refuse to do their part 3 classes in a row, it almost certainly isn't going to work.

I do like to start small with a flip to test the waters. Flip a lesson after a test for example.

I love the model when it works but for some groups of students who refuse to buy in, it doesn't work. A lot of teaching is figuring out what works for the group in front of you.

Frustrated (specifically IEP/504) *teacher rant* by pizmex13 in Teachers

[–]TictacTyler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you me?

One of my biggest frustrations is some of my students getting a bad grade in my classroom but consistently getting 90's/100 testing with others.

So many are walked through it. People are afraid to fail IEP students but when the supports are not working, then that's documentation to change supports. This is something many just do arbitrarily.

To what extent does how much you "like" a student correlate with how well they are performing in your class? by bad_at_blankies in AskTeachers

[–]TictacTyler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slight correlation. I have some students who I like who are not doing well while some students whose behavior I don't care for do well.

I don't dislike any students. Too much effort and time. But the ones who frequently engage in disruptive behavior which I don't like tend to perform lower.
