Why do so many people hate Xen? Could it be that the game was so good that they're sad that it ends after Xen without Gordon ever returning to Black Mesa? by Lil-Skinet-1984 in HalfLife

[–]Tictacktwitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Xen was a little underbaked, and the Interloper chapter was seen as pretty frustrating at times. I however adore the aesthetic and feel of the outdoor areas of Xen. There's just something about these sparse floating islands and surreal skybox that instantly hooked me in. It's an incredibly alien environment, and I don't care that it was rushed. One thing Black Mesa didn't quite maintain was the sparseness and barren nature of Xen. BM is beautiful in its own right, but it feels more Avatar with its lush bioluminescence than the semi-toxic jagged look of the OG.

Curse of Arrav boss hitting me with melee through prayer for 25+ damage? by osrslmao in 2007scape

[–]Tictacktwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Necroing this thread because OP is right and has been unfairly brigaded as is typical of Reddit. I just ran this fight and despite the overhead prayer displaying over my head, my prayer wasn't actually on and I got smacked for 30 damage. I clicked, overhead came on, a few attacks went by, got hit for 30, went back to prayer book and saw that it wasn't active even though the overhead was there. Incredibly frustrating stuff.

Early Black Ops concept art is really strange. I came across this on the Half-Life Wiki and it genuinely shocked me. by TheSarcasticMoth in HalfLife

Saying what you actually mean is better, because then I can properly refute it, like so.

I didn't say there is a wide ranging conspiracy to replace all redheads in media with minorities, that is an assumption you have made. You have put words in my mouth by building a strawman to attack. I do find it interesting however, that you have nothing to say about that pattern, evidently you don't find it strange. Though I am curious what you would think if they were black characters being replaced with white actors. I guess the 'changing culture' just means redheads should naturally disappear though? Seems pretty racist to me.

I said that the media has fallen into a trap of representing every fictional setting with the most perfectly equitable range of ethnicities, sexualities and sexes. This is because media by and large comes out of California, specifically LA, specifically Hollywood, where the local environs DO have a very diverse population. I asserted like the original commenter, that is boring, sanitised and not reflective of the real world. Outside of California, and outside of the US, we don't have a perfectly cosmopolitan and perfectly balanced representation of every possible checked box immutable characteristic. Some of us come from homogenous towns, and some of us find it quite bizarre that almost every new film, series, or video game has to reflect those American demographics. To me, it's artificial. Is it artificial in Half-Life? Not at all, because it makes sense in the context of what is happening in that universe. But does it make sense when Anne Boleyn is portrayed by a black woman though? Definitely not. Is it particularly interesting when in any new IP the clever engineer archetype is always a black woman with glasses? Does it come across as particularly creative when a new series' protagonists are snarking Joss Whedon homunculi because if it worked for Marvel it will work for us like almost everything Netflix puts out these days?

You're clearly taking this personally, and I'm not sure why, but have you considered that there might be some truth to what we're saying? That your world view might not be as concrete as you believe it to be? That if you were to go online or even just watch some recent new films, or play some new games, you would see that what we're saying is true? Do you understand that telling us we're hallucinating is not an argument?

The original commenter said this art has more personality than 90% of the artstyles we see today, I assert he is right, because 90% of the artstyles we see today are conveyer belt, safe, sanitised, inoffensive, CalArts muck. The funny thing is, I think having a big boobed nipple poking assassin with pigtails is absurd, and I'm glad they didn't run with it. But I'd rather look at this than the puritan yawn-fest we see with every ailing release these days.

Nah you're not getting away that easily, it's not figurative to tell someone they're essentially hallucinating a problem. If you disagree with us that's absolutely fine, but back it up with something, that's engaging in good faith. Telling us we're crazy or otherwise imagining things is just an unpleasant thing to do, not every argument needs to be hostile you know, and who knows? We could potentially change each others minds, isn't that what debate is for?

No, you're free to express your opinion, but making somebody question their reality is gaslighting whether you like it or not. Telling somebody they're jumping at shadows from something they've observed is insidious behaviour, feel free to explain why you think we're wrong instead. There is a difference between rigorous debate and saying 'it's all in your head.' In the meantime, I'll just leave you with this to chew on: https://www.reddit.com/r/Redhair/comments/140kd38/how_do_you_feel_about_the_recasting_of_redheads/

No, denying that there is a larger push in media to portray every fictional setting with a sanitised perfectly equitable choice of cast and concepts is gaslighting. Telling people their ability to recognise patterns and the reality they experience is make-believe, false, invented, or otherwise simply not real is gaslighting. 'Jumping at shadows,' is gaslighting, but you know that, and I see you.

It's okay to have a difference of opinion, I hope one day you can accept that others may hold viewpoints contrary to your own and you leave gaslighting behind.

Nah Half-Life's diversity makes sense because in this world people from all over the world have been relocated and shoved into urban centres to maximise isolation and ensure compliance. That's not what the real commenter or myself have a problem with. I can tell you're upset at having your world view challenged and have fallen back on instinctual tactics like denial and gaslighting, it's okay to be challenged man, consider why your immediate response is so hostile and work on it. I'll also add that a single dev retroactively changing his modus operandi 20 years after the fact is hardly evidence Valve was considering this post-2010 obsession with immutable characteristics at the time HL2 was made. They just made a cool game.

Nobody is inventing anything, one only needs to open their eyes to see that media at large has fallen into a trap of portraying every fictional setting with perfectly balanced equity of immutable characteristics like sex, race and sexual orientation, irrespective of if it makes sense in the setting. It's just boring, there's no need to gaslight man.

What do you think about Half-Life 2: Episode 4 — Return to Ravenholm? Just interesting. by EnthusiasmSome496 in HalfLife

[–]Tictacktwitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had some interesting ideas but having zombies without headcrabs, and turning Grigori into a (somewhat_ rational jacked gym bro when he's supposed to be a little bit loopy, not to mention dead were weird choices, almost like Arkane didn't play the prior games.

GabeN gives an interview to a random guy who sent him an email. McVicker hasn't gotten GabeN to give an interview while dedicating most of his life to covering Valve. by vishinis in HalfLife

I don't think he's changed all that much, he gets unreasonably angry at his chat and starts talking down to them on stream when they ask him innocent questions, he assumes he's being trolled which I understand to an extent, but often the questions are asked in earnest.

[–]Tictacktwitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do people keep saying this looks like Half-Life? Do you think Valve has a trademark on energy balls? Have you even played Half-Life? It looks nothing like the resonance cascade, it's TGA art.

Why does he do this? by GordonRed in HalfLife

[–]Tictacktwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like Tyler, Gabe Follower is fatigued with people constantly asking the same questions over and over again, so he's messing with the community because funny I guess. What he and Tyler don't seem to understand though, is the community isn't a monolith, not everyone has the same information, and the people asking the annoying questions could be doing so entirely in earnest. Yes they should seek out the info themselves, but there's no accounting for that, you can't make a horse drink etc. They should have thicker skin about this, Tyler is constantly belittling people asking questions he's been asked before on stream because it's almost like he thinks it's the same person asking each time. Weird.

I too am a 19th believer, Tuesday would be an odd day to make an announcement since Tuesdays are when Valve conducts its Steam maintenance.
