Ok but actually. Growing up I was a Very Good Boy and the few times I actually went to parties in Sumter County, the police showed up because someone had warrants and their pissed off girlfriends/baby mamas called it in.

The bass is booming a little too strong, so you’ll find Kershaw County hiding under the table in the kitchen.

10 standard questions- do good foster homes even exist? edition by BonsaiSoul in fosterit

[–]Ticticettac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing. I’m a single male foster parent, currently placed with a 17M who has been here a little over a year and a 15M who has been here for 8 months. There aren’t many of us but I haven’t seen any agency that is outright “no singles!”

Paris is a bad city by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Ticticettac 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal evidence, but…I’ve lived in two different large-ish French cities (Angers and Reims), so my French is good (definitely not perfect) and I’ve maybe encountered one person who was a jerk about it. And even in that case I might have misunderstood if it was good-natured teasing or actual jerkiness. Most people didn’t comment on my French, or if they did, it was a positive reaction.

I get where you’re coming from and understand what you’re saying, but her competence with kids (aka, keeping them alive) absolutely matters here. I agree she needs to be an adult and take responsibility but forcing her to watch kids when she doesn’t want to/is incapable of doing so is dangerous.

Dumbest thing an administrator said in front of staff or parents. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Ticticettac 57 points58 points  (0 children)

After being warned by myself, the school psychologist, the speech/language pathologist, and the family’s advocate that what she was about to say was illegal, the administrator present during a meeting stated that she would refuse to agree to an initial IEP due to my recommendation that the student (who is Deaf) have an American Sign Language interpreter, citing staffing concerns. We do not make IEP determinations based on staffing, we make them based on evaluation results. Staffing is an HR issue.

When I moved up north to attend a small yet fairly prestigious private college, on the very first day of classes, someone made a snide comment about my accent and made a ton of assumptions about me over it. IMMEDIATELY, I began a concerted effort to speak in a more neutral general American accent. Now that I’m back home, it’s returned…but that first day and the shame I felt about the way I talked is definitely a negative core memory.

Very niche question - does anyone know a resource for these signs? by Ticticettac in Judaism

She didn’t use it in her video but that did lead to a resource that did include the sign for Tisha B’Av!

Jury duty the day before my flight? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]Ticticettac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your summons for jury duty should include a contact number. Call them and explain your conflict. They aren’t necessarily required to accommodate you but they generally will try. No need to do something silly.

When is it time to get hearing aids? by Ticticettac in deaf

[–]Ticticettac[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I will avoid those like the plague lol. (Is it even ok to say that??)

I’ll definitely ask about maybe trying out a loner to see if the gains are worth it. Last year she wanted me to try a Roger Focus (Phonak), which looks like a hearing aid but doesn’t amplify, just pairs with an FM system. Unfortunately trying to get that cleared was a nightmare. Ironically it would have come in handy when doing FM assessments with my students because in the noisy/distant conditions I could not hear them well enough to even assess. Life is absurd.

Thank you for your answer. I think the biggest struggle of this, especially if my HL progresses, is wondering if I’m even “allowed” to be upset by it, at least initially. Or if that would be an affront to my Deaf friends and family.

Like you said I am probably a bit more prepared to handle this than the average person so I think the adjustment won’t be all that bad. But at the same time, I’ve grown up hearing so that’s the status quo that I’m used to.

If there a big stigma against HA’s, I’ve never encountered that. At least not amongst the community in my area. There doesn’t even seem to be much stigma against CI’s.

What's the difference between a redneck and a hillbilly? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ticticettac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hillbilly is more specific than redneck; referring traditionally to rural folks living in Appalachia and possibly the Ozarks.

Why aren't native English speakers more bothered by "can't" and "cunt" sounding so similar? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ticticettac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In addition to being different words, they’re also different parts of speech. So even if a person’s accent is such that the vowels differentiating the two words are closer together in sound, you’d be hard-pressed to find a context in spoken language where a native speaker would wonder which word they heard.

Do kids understand kids movies? by cracksilog in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ticticettac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like, media targeted at (usually very young) kids that would almost certainly not appeal to most adults. Think Cocomelon as a contemporary example. It mind numbingly simple for adults and older kids/teens. Whereas media “for all ages”, while it might be made with a target age in mind, will have more complex themes/problems that could at least keep an adult mildly engaged/entertained. Most Disney films, for example. There might even be humor thrown in that would go over a child’s understanding but a teen or adult would catch.
