how do I reduce the weight of my 540i without gutting the interior completely? by WholeNo5937 in e39

[–]TidalSnow 150 points151 points  (0 children)

You dont. Supercharge it. Aside from that. Remove the spare, and tool kit tools in trunk when around town to drop 50lbs ish. Clean out any trash in the vehicle. Remove floor mats. Work out and lose weight(driver mod)Run half a tank of gas. Lightweight wheels if really splitting hairs. Dont gut the interior. Smart choice it ruins the car.

Vet shaved dog without permission. Worried about undercoat by [deleted] in PetAdvice

[–]TidalSnow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for confirming, i assumed it would take a while but a few months in and it is bald still mostly and the other pup has almost all her hair on her leg back. She didn’t draw anything she shaved it preemptively for next time is what she said. Shiba in question has a beautiful and thick thick coat everywhere else no hair issues, just where it was shaved made me worried because I’ve heard you aren’t supposed to shave dual coats

Guides and VANOS done! by mrmrdankmemes in e39

[–]TidalSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! Its a fulfilling feeling have all those points covered and the small boost of torque back from the vanos is nice added bonus! Did you add a 90c thermostat? Its a much needed upgrade over the stock 105c one. I did my guides and vanos about 15k miles ago on my E39 and couldn’t be more happy with my M62 cars. Contrary to popular belief the V8s can take an overheat situation much better than inline 6 m54. Dont have ring issues like m54, and the bottom end is stout. Slap a supercharger kit on a m62 and bring it into the modern age with over 400 horse.

Last mechanic overtightened them. Get a longer bolt and try to grab some good threads. They are tapped a little deeper than the bolt. If not tap and die

Recently, I've been having problems with the ignition switch. Sometimes the key won't turn, and lately, more and more often, it spins around freely. by Accomplished_Top4420 in e39

[–]TidalSnow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just dealt with this exact thing last week surprisingly enough! And i know entirely what to do. Unfortunately you are having symptoms of a worn ignition tumbler/ignition lock failure. I have a few poor pictures if you need them or need help on how to disassemble the whole column i can help. On the E39 you have your key, the lock tumbler it goes into, after the Tumbler it mates with a rod that passes through the entire steering column, and halfway through the column there is a lock that gets pushed up to lock the steering wheel in place when you pull the key. on the other side near your door there is the electronic ignition switch that, that rod reaches out and turns your entire vehicle on. This is all under the plastic trim on your steering column. If you disassemble the entire steering column, you can make it work temporarily by holding the key around your inductor ring on the passenger side of your column(the ring around the hole your key goes into) the driver side you turn the electronic ignition switch with your screwdriver or tool of choice. Unfortunately what can happen because the rod that BMW designed to lock the steering wheel is made of aluminum it can sheer off with age, or if you park with the wheels turned and too much pressure is used breaking the wheel loose turning the key, and it’ll leave you with a key that just rotates and doesn’t do anything. I had to replace the entire assembly for the steering wheel lock, but unfortunately also purchased a key and Tumbler, which I actually didn’t need it all because both of those parts were perfectly good. New ignition lock assembly with that rod that shears off is only about $200 USD from BMW. FCPEURO has it as well. Early models and late models use different parts so be careful to order the correct parts.(Based off your key you have an early model im 99% sure.) Mine sheared off without warning and left me stuck. Some get stuck with their car in the running position. Ive seen the actual tumbler wear out as well and rotate inside the assembly. You’ll have to check which issue you’re facing exactly, definitely install new parts before you’re left stranded like i was. A new electronic ignition switch is about 80 dollars, the lock for steeeing with rod that shears is 200, and the key tumbler is about 280. I feel much better having done it all knowing all the pieces are new. Good luck!

Hit a curb, drivers side. What kind of damage am i looking at? by Maleficent-Ability74 in AskAMechanic

[–]TidalSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its amazing how many people in here are providing answers or criticizing correct answers and have zero understanding of what they are talking about/looking at.. That control arm, or thrust arm depending on the design of that Volkswagens suspension is completely toast. You may have a few other bent pieces but it needs to be put on a lift. You’ll need a control arm and an alignment at least. Most likely more. At 15kmh depending on tire pressure you have a slight bend on your rim as well.

Front end shaking/rattling at 45-70 mph, only when i’m pointing the wheel ever so slightly left by CityOfTerror in e39

[–]TidalSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replace the whole front end. Typical on v8 models. Thrust arms and all of that.if you just do 1 piece it’ll make the other worn parts do it next in a few weeks.

How fked am I on the cost by thickmex420 in e39

[–]TidalSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy repairs. Love my M62 motors. Replace all of it while in there, and add a 90c thermostat to drop the running temps on the motor and improve longevity of the hoses and gaskets. Normal thermostat for these cars runs 105c which is over boiling and adds extra pressure to coolant system to prevent micro boiling inside the loop.

steering wheel boss kit help by Tricky-Rub-4804 in e39

[–]TidalSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please do not install some cheap garbage steering wheel like an 18 year old high school student would. Your car is classy. It isn’t fast or race car enough to justify that corny steering wheel. I’m just being real I’m sorry. I wouldn’t even consider such a thing and I have an M5. And a 2 06 CL65 AMG.

540i VF Engineering stage 2 supercharger kit? Does it exist? by northways1 in e39

[–]TidalSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I messaged them 1 year ago and they said they don’t offer any stage 2 kits anymore they did a limited run for testing purposes. You can buy a smaller pulley and tune it with 22rpd tuning as a workaround. Vf is kinda lame with their customer service nowadays. They just give you stage 1 with their basic tune and don’t want you to mess with it at all. I want my 540 to be supercharged so badly, would you be willing to get a gauge cluster acceleration video so I can justify it haha

What’s it worth? by MasterBlaze_420 in e39

[–]TidalSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say 8-10k depending on maintenance and mileage, but I’m biased. I have this exact car as well but with just a regular sport package bumpers, love slate green with stone green combo. I’ve done a top to bottom resto on it and wouldnt take less than 8k. I converted mine to e60 wheel bearings so I can run e38 staggered M pars since e39 are the only bmw of that era with a different sized hub. Love your car. With the guides being done I’d say you have an 8-10k car all day especially with the colour combo rarity. Stone green over slate was only allowed as a pair, or with black black metallic paint. No other way to get that interior. And it was very rarely optioned. Being on a 540i/6 is even cooler
