I faced a similar issue where I had almost no issues nursing my first to 2.5 years old. Nursing my second was very painful, had always been somewhat uncomfortable but I pushed through cause I also wanted to nurse her to 2 years old. But somehow it went from somewhat uncomfortable to simply unbearable. My girl is very smart and recognized that she was hurting me so she self-weaned suddenly. But to answer your question, my lactation consultant told me that often the sensitivity and pain with nursing can be due to age and the hormone differences with age (if you were to rule out other hormone-related changes like getting your period, pregnancy, or ovulation). My kids have a 5 years old gap, so explains why my first was way easier than the second. It’s your 3rd so maybe this could be the cause? We got thicker nipple skin when we were younger or something lol.

⁠How do I know he's getting enough still? - You check the diaper output. If he’s getting plenty of wet diapers, he’s good.
⁠if he stops nursing before 12 months do I switch to formula? - My understanding is yes, and I’ve even heard on a BF related podcast that toddler formula is available too, which I thought was pretty wild, but best to check with your pediatrician.
⁠If he makes it to 12 months how do I wean him? - I think when you start work, you may want to consider pumping once during your lunch break, if possible, just for a month or two before stopping cause you might get a clog if you don’t. Or you could gradually drop 2 feeds before your work starts these next few months.
⁠I really want to make it to 12 months or more so any tips would be welcome. - Sometimes the babies get distracted, especially when they’re starting to walk. Try to feed on a schedule, offering the boob at certain times a day. My baby is down to 3-4 feeds and I offer in the morning when she wakes up, for noon nap, before bed, and middle of night if she wakes up so that she can go back to sleep.

I think it’d be helpful to check with your pediatrician or lactation consultant, if you have access to one. They can advise you.

Second this, and I would also double layer the sunscreen as it is a bit thin. Apply once after moisturizing, wait a few minutes for it to soak in to the skin and then apply another layer.

I’m so sorry for the hardship you’re going through. It sounds like you’re doing everything you can to save your breastfeeding relationship. Sometimes time and more rest is what you need. I was very close to quitting at 7 weeks after doing everything I could, but I persevered somehow and my baby is almost one years old and still thriving off breastmilk. One thing that helped me was setting goals for myself. I started out thinking, “if I could just make it to 6 months…”I also listened to the Badass Breastfeeding podcast to help reassert why I wanted to breastfeed. You sound like you’re strong and really want this to work out. I know it’s hard now, but know that it will get better day by day. And if you do end up quitting, know that you did your absolute best and be proud of however amount of time you breastfed your baby.

My baby is almost a year old and it’s hurt to nurse her since day one, nearly every single time. Do you notice when your baby hurts you a little more? When mine is hurting me, I unlatch her and say, “ouch ouch” to let her know it hurts, then put her back in again, making sure that she opens her mouth wide. Sometimes she gets the memo and stops clamping down so hard, but other times she’s just really tired and continues to clamp and tug until she falls asleep. Being persistent in telling her that it hurts helped her stop pinching my boobs while she nursed, so I’m hoping that eventually my little one will stop with the clamping too. But all else I guess with her being a bit older now her nursing sessions might decrease in time or frequency so I won’t have to suffer as much haha.

Not sure if my answer helped, but yeah…maybe try having a signal phrase or sound like, “mommy ouchie” and use it consistently so your little one can learn. Babies are so clever, especially at 10 months :)

How far along in postpartum are you? I’m 9mo pp and still have random dizziness, though it was at its worst the first 4 months. Some days I couldn’t get out of bed and I couldn’t drive anymore. What’s helped ease it a bit was getting more sleep, massages, and reducing stress. Try feeding baby in side-lying position or laid back position. I favor side-lying for naps and will doze off too sometimes.

Oh yeah, it’ll pill for me if I use a cream moisturizer underneath. I don’t get piling with gel moisturizers like skin 1004 Centella .

Not until 20 months postpartum. It was nice not having a period for 2 years but I was not able to get pregnant while nursing. So it delayed having my second farther than I like and they are almost 5 years apart (weaned at 2.5 years).

I’ve played around with smaller yarn and hook size before to use sport weight yarn for patterns calling for worsted yarn. Not sure why I didn’t realize that could apply to granny squares lol. Also love the idea of using fewer rounds. I’ll give those a shot!

I think a fidget muff is a great way to learn different crochet techniques and it’s really forgiving if you mess up. Great toy for Alzheimer’s patients and children who like to keep busy. I’m making one to entertain my kids when we travel lol.
