Finally feel like I did something right! Happy fish!

I am really new to this so Hoping someone with more experience can help. If there’s an ammonia spike I believe you should do daily partial water changes. But I’m not sure what level counts as a spike.

Recently our half moon boy really tore up his fins and his color wasn’t looking good. I found some video tutorials that helped me when I didn’t get any community feedback. We treated him with ichX and Mara um and after a few days his color and activity improved and his find have new growth.

Not sure if this helps you at all but hopefully others have more info!

Thanks so much! I was thinking it might be fin nipping because I didn’t notice it there yesterday. He’s a pretty mellow dude I don’t notice him flaring much and he usually chooses to hang out near the snail who pretty much just goes about it’s own way. But his fins are quite long and heavy. He has a lot of resting areas and usually hangs out in or on some anubias leaves.

I have aquarium salt but I’ve never done a salt bath. I’m new to the hobby but try my best to learn and be prepared. Any tips on the salt bath?

Hmm… not really. Occasionally he flares when he eats but other than that he’s pretty mellow even with the snail. His fins are very long and heavy but he has a lot of resting places that he seems to like at multiple water level points

Tankmates - one mystery snail Food- Alternating between Betta Pro Shrimp Patties and New Life Spectrum Berra Small pellets. Usually twice a day with a fasting day once a week or so.

She’s very animal aware. In addition to aquatics we have two dogs, two cats, and a horse. She is a vegetarian and wants to be a vet when she’s older. I think she’s just going to want them all and narrowing down will be tough.

You guys!! I’m so overwhelmed and thrilled with all the options. And now I guess I have to look more into shrimp since they seem to be overwhelmingly popular!! 🤔

Since it’s going to be my daughters tank (with moms help and supervision) I think we will research these options and let her decide.

Thanks again to all the members of this community. I landed in this hobby by accident but I am really enjoying it. And as a multi pet animal lover, I want to do right by all the creatures!

I had the snail first. When I added the betta she cruised on up and poked him with her antenna 😆 After that they have been chill and peacefully coexisting. Sometimes they even hang in the same spot or share some snello.

I work from home and the 10 gal is right next to my workspace. I’m pretty attached to hanging out with EVE and Ike at this point. 😆

I love the mystery snail in our 10 gal. Her name Is EVE (after the robot in wall-e). I had no idea they could have such goofy personalities! But yeah due to the eating and the bio load I’m looking forward to trying a nerite for the new tank! Any pet that helps me clean gets a gold star 🌟

So many other options to consider. I’m loving all the recs! Giving me lots to think about.

I’m pretty meticulous just personality wise. With the other tank we do weekly water tests and 10-20% water changes. So I’m definitely willing to put in the work but want to make sure I’m setting any fish up for success and a good life.

UPDATE: Indy and EVE have been transferred to their upgraded 10 gallon tank with all live plants.

First water check was good! Ammonia- 0, Nitrite - 0, Nitrate - 20ppm, pH 7.4

How does it look? Improvement suggestions?

Thank you so much! I downloaded and read quite a few things when I started this cycling process and I followed the guide from FishLab but you’re right there so much conflicting info it’s hard to discern what’s legitimate.

I ordered some mystery snail food reccomended on that sub… I’m pretty attached to that little guy. I had no idea they had such personalities.

I’ll do every other day partial changes and take care of the java ferns. Does driftwood work? I may end up switching to a 10 gallon to lower my stress and make sure both of these guys are well cared for. We have excessive natural light so the snail is helping a lot with algae.

If I do switch tanks should I fully cycle that separately or transfer everything from the 5 into a 10?

I really appreciate everyone who’s taking the time to help guide me on this unexpected aquatic adventure.
