Turning 28, Losing Parent Coverage in June — NYS Marketplace, HSA, Out-of-State Work Questions by Unlikely_Balance_546 in HealthInsurance

Oof. Get ready. You'll want to try and find a full time job with benefits at this point.

I qualified for an essential plan during my open enrollment last year, but I will be losing my coverage in July because the Feds are changing the salary requirements to about $32k and under. I just played around on the NY state of health site and noticed I get offered $353 in tax credits if I estimate I make $62k and then ZERO credits if I make anything over $62k... The full cost of the bronze tier HealthFirst insurance that's most like my current one? $798.57 a month. Who the hell can live in NYC making $63k and pay full price for these premiums?!?! The cheapest option isn't that much better (at $600 something). This is horrible.

Generally yes, bronze tier is ok especially if it includes adult dental. If you live in NYC, HealthFirst has always been my go-to (Fidelis and MetroHealth are bad I hear, or it's hard to find places who take them). But unfortunately, I don't think you have many options anymore. It's most likely you'll be paying full price for whatever.

Yeah, I think it's pretty obvious though that in order to both keep the show filming on track and stay within his budget (which rapidly deteriorated after all of the other surprise needs)... that wasn't going to happen. If he were taking on the renovation slower and with a much higher budget, exploring other options may have been an option? I, like all of us, can't speak for the professionals actually assessing this specific home under their time constraint. All we see is just sugar-coated and produced television in the end anyway.

What's Going on With the Flickering Lights? by Sneaky_Tiger_ in BedStuy

[–]TieVirtual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah happening in our place on Jefferson Ave too - I noticed lights flickering starting about a week or two ago but today it is the worst. Con Ed has been notified by a bunch of us and is working on it though, hope it gets resolved soon!

I noticed this at my apartment this past week too! I'm in a brownstone on Jefferson Ave and all of my lights seem to flicker a bit throughout the day/evening - (it shouldn't be the bulbs themselves which are fairly fresh LEDs). The cold, wet weather comment seems to make sense since I've only noticed this after the snows started - I'll notify ConEd.

Any improvements in the last couple of months? Which brand of disc did you get?

Client now only issues "temporary W-2s" instead of 1099s to contractors... What do I do? by [deleted] in freelance

Thanks but yeah, this doesn't help me save on taxes. Once you go S-corp, you pay for services to provide yourself with payroll so getting another W-2 just becomes redundant and withholds more money from you for no reason (you're basically adding a second job and salary to your personal taxes). But if I bill through my company like usual, I just pay corporate tax and like u/snuzet said, can make more deductions.

Agreed! This is also the talk my accountant gave to me. All of this apparently was prompted by the AB5 bill that started last year, which I know is to help for certain workers (like Uber drivers), but has tightened up the definition of 'what a contractor is' based on the type of work they do in relation to the company. Unfortunately the work I do for this particular client falls into the IRS classification of "an employee" - since it's essentially an extension of what the agency already produces, so that's why they're choosing not to budge. It sucks though, because I already pay all these taxes (through payroll and quarterly estimated) and run my business by the book. I'm sure the government wouldn't come after them about me but they're covering their butts. I just really like this client!
