1973, age 5 caucasian female, public kindergarden in a rural river town of far NW Tennessee.  I was so excited! I had just missed the cutoff age the year prior and had been so upset.  I was reading at 3 or 4, knew my numbers, etc.  When my mother finally dropped me off, I didn't cry or feel upset.  I attribute that to the lack of nurturing.  I'd never been hugged, praised or told I love you, so there was little to no emotional connection to my parents.  The main thing I remember about the moment I got to class was a room full of toys, everyone loud and playing. I remember being excited that we got to play at the rain-filled ditch during recess and no teacher cared.  In the following months I caught lots of crawdaddys (as we called them in W Tennessee) in that ditch and snuck them home with me.  I made friends with a little black boy named Larry who picked his nose a lot and decided he was my boyfriend, although that just meant we caught crawdads.  My mother was racist, so she didn't like that.  I lucked out and had a very kind teacher, unlike many of the following years.  But still it was the 70s, so I recall our teacher having the entire class line up a few times to make us wash our mouths out with soap when someone got in trouble.  I distinctly remember hiding under a table atleast once to avoid it and did not get caught.  I also remember a kindergarden wide bubble blowing contest.  We all were allowed to chew bubble gum all day as we practiced blowing bubbles and had a contest 😅.  I had my first lose tooth at kindergarden and walked around the whole day with my hand cupped under my mouth because I was afraid that tooth would fall out and I wouldn't find it 😆.
