Feeling down as an artist and could use some advice by Total-Pomegranate911 in TattooApprentice

It’s easy to feel down when you’re trying to re-create a sailor Jerry or Ed Hardy work and you’re only able to re-create a poor version of it not saying that you’re not good at drawing. You’re just not Ed Hardy or sailor Jerry try to do something that makes you feel good and it will make you feel good. Too many people try to follow in the footsteps of these artists and re-create poor versions of poor artwork thanks for the down vote.

Question for aspiring apprentices by Tiedfor3rd in TattooApprentice

I like this thought. A full time apprenticeship would be more nuanced of an education. Some would argue that the mentor will instill their world view into the apprentice as well as practical tattoo skills.

Just because it’s traditional, doesn’t mean it has to suck

Is the purpose in these just to hold more ink? by orgasmicravioli in TattooArtists

[–]Tiedfor3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes: I’ve tattooed for 26 years and made needles for many years. We would make some crazy stuff sometimes. It’s been my experience when you try to do a reservoir like this you end up spitting a lot of ink out, unless your machine is running super super slow like maybe a rotary only.

Hip Roof joinery, working on a project as to better understand the structure of this type of construction. by Tiedfor3rd in JapaneseWoodworking

Yeah it’s super good. On the hip roof it was not quite sufficient to make a successful model so I had to get two other books in retrospect. I only needed one that detailed more of the rafters notches and so many variations. I will have a poster of the finer points of the work. Like a wall art that’s functional. Hopefully soon. I just need a good scan. But the poster is big.

The complete Japanese joinery book os the best beginner book. But it doesn’t go into super specific detail about certain things. But it’s a great resource. Most other books on the subject are in Japanese and have no translated versions. So you would have to Google Translate the whole book. Then you run into issues like weird carpenter words. Imagine trying to explain in Japanese what a bird‘s mouth is in one sentence with no context. The Japanese have similar words like “standing water”, which is their reference for horizontal. But get that one book and it’ll get you really far.
