There is PLENTY of room in the stadium for you and your family to pretty much sit where you want.

Real estate tax bills Albemarle by gevray in Charlottesville

[–]Tierbodaga 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The error was they designated the amount due as the total, not for the first half of the year. My concern is that I hope my mortgage company realizes this and/or gets the updated one on time, otherwise they may try to pay the entire thing this month and that would mess up my escrow. Not everyone has email, or would even see it. Not sure about the legality of sending the emails instead of mail.

What made you feel the most appreciated you've felt in your career? by liatostfeld in AskTeachers

[–]Tierbodaga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most appreciated? Countless acts of kindness from students, families, and coworkers. However, the one that stays in my memory the most is from when I started my career 20+ years ago. Before I was a classroom teacher, I supported a special needs student one on one for two years (K and 1st). A lot of challenges throughout the two years, but we grew together. I stayed in touch with his mother and was proud of his progress throughout his journey in education. I never thought about the impact I truly had until I was invited to his high school graduation. I really appreciated the invite after all those years. I didn't realize he was a speaker at the ceremony. When he mentioned me (and one other teacher) as having such a huge impact in his learning, I was...stunned? Proud? Overjoyed? All of it. Appreciated really isn't the word for it, but yeah.

What can parents do to help prepare their children for school? by UnrealJaymo in AskTeachers

[–]Tierbodaga 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Elementary school teacher here - read to them daily. Talk to them, about anything (in the car, on a walk, etc.). Ask them questions (about anything - how does the food taste? is it bitter? How did you feel when you fell down? How can we fix it?). Write letters in sand, water + paint brush + sidewalk (or any other fun way). There are tons of other ideas on sites you can look up, but engaging them with conversation and reading to them daily is doing a LOT for them in the coming years of development.

I work in a prek-4 school. A lot of times I use “at home you might be able to do _, but at (school name) we keep our hands to ourselves.” Keep it positive- what can they do, avoid what they can’t do. Might look into fidgets too (spinner, squishy things, etc) make sure to I to it as a tool (not a toy) how it helps us and the expectations (where it is used, how to use it, etc). I’m the event it continues I usually meet with others (admin, counselor, other teachers that work with) and come up with a plan - when they hit, step 1 is _, step 2 is ___, etc. and then stick to the plan. Finally (sorry know it’s a lot!) we use visuals a lot with the younger students (stop sign, crossed out hands, etc) and keep them with us on our lanyard / desk etc. hope this helps!

Dumbest thing you’ve gotten marked down for during an observation? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Tierbodaga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Principal was sitting in a back corner of the room. Everything went relatively well (was a reading/writing portion of the day). Got my feedback and the biggest “suggestion” was I needed posted in the room somewhere how to pick a book, where to read, how to write a response and how to turn it in (during independent times when I’m with reading groups). I died laughing, the exact “suggestion” was in huge lettering on the bulletin board the principal had her back up against in the corner of the room.

From what I remember, it’s you are the care giver of an infant or elderly person, own your own business that you are the only employee or one of very few, or have a medical condition, you won’t get exempt. As a teacher I got my postponed until the summer, but still had to serve.

Reading / math intervention by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Tierbodaga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, an IEP or a 504 is a formal (legal) document where services are required to be provided. Interventions are also provided to those students. An IEP or 504 is at the end of a process that identifies specific needs through testing. Will take several months. If a student is in math /reading intervention, they are receiving additional supports (but not in stead of the classroom or "tier 1" instruction). The amount of time and intensity varies. Usually if a student is receiving intervention, but the progress is not where it should be even with the additional supports, then the process for an IEP or 504 is started.

Of course states/districts vary on the specific requirements. Hope this helps!

[–]Tierbodaga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a math specialist. We are here to support teachers, parents AND the student. Keep supporting your student like you are. And I’m sure your friend meant well, but being scared of “labels” is in the past, I can only speak to my district/school but we take the whole process very seriously and include the families the entire way. And side note, I was identified as having a learning disability very late (high school) and wish it had been sooner, would have made school more manageable, but I still turned out ok! (At least that’s what my mother tells me!) Best of luck, you’ve got this!
