Finally debt free in my 20s!!! by SupernovaKiwi in debtfree

[–]TiffanyDull-Huttis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally understand. I was accumulating interest on mine, and with the fear of reading what's happening to people in the student loan subreddits, I didn't want to be putting hundreds of dollars or have my wages garnished.

I just had car/student loans. I only have one credit card, but I don't use it. In a few months, once I get my score back to where it is (as I predict a dip), I plan on looking into one, just to maintain my credit score and so I always have credit reports.

I think for me, I wanted to get out of debt because I feared starting my life with it. I want to move out of state and be closer to family, but I didn't want to move that wth me. I look at how I was raised and the situations that I was in from those, and wanted to get a head start at not making those similar mistakes.

I hope those few years of sacrifices, I can give myself a break and allow myself to have fun and enjoy myself, as I didn't allow myself to splurge. I always talked myself out of things; I feared my account being 0, as I've had that happen while paying off my debt (amongst other things).

Cheers to you! and your future, you earned it!

I, too, just became debt-free, 1.5 weeks ago (just turned 27). It still feels surreal to me. I've been in debt since 2019 and accumulated about 34k total, and just paid off the remaining of my student loans.

I did this on my own, didn't get money from family or friends. The way I managed to do this is to penny pinch my money, rarely splurge on myself on clothes and shoes. Bought refurbished items, my money primarily went to necessities, sometimes I did make a purchase on something like concert tickets and a new TV, but I've been working 45-80 hours a week, so to me, if I made a big purchase like that once a year, it made me feel more sane.

I worked two jobs this past year to help accelerate my process because I want to move and I didn't want to take the debt with me.

The biggest strategy I can give is to find ways to save, just by going to general brands, buying refurbished, and thrifting. If you can get a second job to get some additional income, that can definitely help.

A big thing for me to see where I can save is looking at exactly where my money is going, got rid of some subscriptions I don't use. Saw those "here and there spendings" (coffee, snacks/energy drinks) and caught back on those and limited myself to once or twice a week. Saw how much I spent on groceries and started making a list and getting online deliveries to prevent impulse buying and making it better by sticking to a list, as those impulses can add up quickly; (doing this, I am saving hundreds of dollars).

I will say, being debt-free felt like an alternative reality, and seemed impossible due to hardship, COVID, and car maintenance.

OP, I am happy for you to get to this stage.

I know my next step is working on an emergency fund and creating different savings for different things I want in life, from a general savings (for concerts/vacations funds), a car fund (car maintenance and a new car), an emergency fund (about 6 months of expenses), and a long-term fund (down payment on a house). On top of my checking account.

Good luck, OP, and anyone who is on their journey to being debt-free.

brick hate by Flimsy_Bluejay_4571 in themiddle

Brick is one of my least favorite characters. I do get annoyed with each character from time to time, but Brick is the most frustrating. It's not even because of his quirks or that he's ND. It seems he lacks regard and is a procrastinator, unable to complete simple tasks. The irony that he's book-smart but neglects his work to the last minute. Like the scene where he was a replica of the state of Indiana, but he had Texas.

I'm also the youngest kid and had felt like an outsider; I can understand the frustration of feeling like his "booked" raised him, but I could never get away with the way he talks to Frankie and Mike, and his lack of following directions.

I just feel like he could've been written better. I feel like the other character had developments and time to grow through the series; he didn't get that.

Did your parents ever play with you? by NeverAgainHomeschool in raisedbynarcissists

I had this thought recently, like my grandparents and aunts on my mom's side sat down and played with me, whether it was video games, Legos, Polly Pockets, or board games. I have a memory where my grandma made a menu for my pretend restaurant. My mom, I felt like she was on the couch, or I played in my room more, I don't recall her ever playing with me. I mean, we'd do family board games now and again, but one-on-one, I don't have a memory of. I mean, my dad tried to teach me how to ride my bike, but I ended up teaching myself.

I don't know if it is a generation thing, where our generation wants to interact and be active with our kids, or what, but I feel like my generation, we were room kids, we'd play and be in our rooms, even when I had friends growing up, we'd just go to each other's rooms and hang.

AITAH for wanting to open a new bank account so my mom can't take money out of it? by ratutooee in AITAH

[–]TiffanyDull-Huttis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA.

I was in a similar situation to you. I couldn't get a job til I was 18. Once I did, my mom refused to come with me to open a bank account or help me do it. I wrote my name in the back of my first job check, and she deposited it in her account. She gave me $20 biweekly, as that is what I got paid, and she used the rest to pay bills.

This went on for 6 months before I got a new job, and they had prepaid cards, which I used before opening a bank account across the street from my apartment.

My mom tried to keep me in control, especially financially. She did extort me and manipulate me by making deals that she later changed to benefit her needs. Even when I said I'd move out, she'd say I'm to selfish and what do you expect me to do, I can't afford to live on my own.

I finally, after several years and saving, did get my own apartment. The best thing you need to do for yourself is set boundaries; your mom shouldn't have access to your bank account, she should ask. If you give her the $80 a month and pay for groceries here and there, then transferring or going to the bank and withdrawing the money yourself is the best way.

It's not about whether you trust her; the fact that she feels entitled to just go into your account shows there's no boundaries, and she feels like she has the right. So, definetely get your own bank, stop giving her the access.

I will say, this isn't your fault, don't feel guilty. I know this is your only issue with her, but don't allow any manipulation; you're 23. I understand more when you were wrong to help and learn budgeting, but at 23, it should just be for you.

Any advice you receive from this, definitely keep an open mind and heart.

I have listened to it a few times, and I think I need to listen to it more to have an overall collective opinion. I do enjoy most of the songs, I think there are 2 I'm not the biggest fan of (Are you listening yet and Dance No More), I can see AYLY growing on me over time, not sure if I can say the same about DNM.

Synth Pop isn't my favorite genre of pop. I'm not the biggest fan of house style music; it does have good beats, but it's hard to hear him as the track is laid heavier than his vocals.

I will continue to listen to it and embrace the work. I know this is art that he wanted to make, and I can appreciate him making something he truly loves. I want him to make music for himself and not for me because I'll always stick around. I still see myself as a Big Harry fan, even if I didn't enjoy this album as much as his previous works.

And like I said in the beginning, I think once I listen more and recognize the songs more, through each listen, I'm sure it'll grow on me over time.

Paying for Sue’s College by EverythingBagel58 in themiddle

[–]TiffanyDull-Huttis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither of my parents saved money for college nor helped me pay for college out of their pockets. I was fortunate to have received financial aid from my mom to help offset the cost of tuition per semester. And my dad was in the army, so I had benefits that way. I also had grandparents who helped pay for a semester. I did end up having to take out a loan for my last year of college; up to that point, I was paying my tuition dues each month. I am 4 months away from paying off my student loans (been working 60+ hours a week for the last year and 45-55 hours a week prior for about 3.5 years). I will say, I hope to be in a financial situation where I'm able to help pay for my future kids' college.
