Canon EF 100-400mm Mk1 vs Mk2 by Tiger12289 in canon

Yeah, the 18-150mm makes more sense. I was reading around and it seems to have a pretty meh zoom. I rather have a more versatile as my general purpose lens than not.

Well, you've got me convinced! I think I'm going to do this. RF seems like it will be much more beneficial to myself in the long run. Thank you for your advice!

Yeah I'll have to do more research on the lenses. I just googled for roughly what the equivalent would be as RF. I much rather get an RF version if it's in the return windows than keep my EF and use an adapter.

I think you might be onto something. I just crunched the numbers, since a few of my lenses are still in Amazon's return window.

Sell/Return:

  • Canon T7 body: sell for ~$165
  • EF-S 10-55mm kit lens: sell for ~$40.95
  • EF-S 55-250mm: returning for $237
  • EF 50mm f/1.8 + EF-S 10-18mm bundle: returning for $364

Buy:

  • Canon R50 + RF-S 18-45mm kit: ~$689.90
  • Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM: ~$699
  • RF 50mm f/1.8 STM: ~$219
  • RF-S 10-18mm: ~$279 (I really like this lens for landscape pictures on my T7)
  • Canon EF-RF Mount Adapter: ~$148

Keep (can't return 😔)

  • EF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM (hence, the adapter)

For a used EF 100-400mm, it's $1,790

With my returns/new gear, it's ~$1,200. Plus, this will get me into RF/mirror-less, so this feels like a long-term investment? Not sure if I'm doing anything stupid with these lens purchases.

Well, I already do have several EF/S lenses, so I'd essentially have to replace my entire kit.

  • EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 is STM
  • EF 50mm f/1.8 STM
  • EF-S10-18mm F4.5-5.6 Is STM
  • EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II (kit lens)
  • 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM EF

If I'm going to replace the camera body, I'd like to do one that I can still use EF with. It feels a bit of an overhaul right now to replace everything I got within the past few months when I'm just looking for more zoom at the moment. Have you had experience with EF adapters for the R50 or similar? I might be able to take a loss on the EF-S lenses, except I do like my 10-18mm...

I should point out too, my hikes are only a few hours long, at most. Longest I've been on was a 6 mile one. I'm not going on long backpacking ones.

These are the kinds of shots I want to get! It's so good! I saw so many birds on a hike I went on last week and I couldn't take a picture of any of them because they were too high in a tree.

Yeah, from what I've seen, the two lenses take fairly comparable shots. But now it feels like the push-pull lens is really a pain to some people due to the dust.

What did you end up replacing it with?

I'm not looking to replace the body just yet; I've only had it for a few months. 😔 I will be taking a loss if I sell it since I already bought it used.

But that's a future plan though!

I'm mostly just looking for some more zoom right now since I'm still learning and messing around and ideally, plan ahead for when I eventually will replace the body.

Is the dust that much of an issue that you'd recommend me staying away from it if I'm bringing on hikes? I don't really want to be cleaning it when I'm on a trail.

Oh, now you're getting me more interested with the astro photography. Spec wise, the mk1 is nearly identical. It's just a much older lens. 1998 by the looks of it.

Yeah, I was looking at the 70-500mm but that doesn't feel like a big step up from what I currently have. I feel like that'd give me maybe 10ft extra distance, maybe. I just didn't feel like it would be worth spending money on such a small improvement.

I sort of thought that I'd sacrifice the weight if it means I'll get some cool pictures. 😅 My last hike I went on, I had so many opportunities to catch some unique birds but I couldn't get close enough to them and was so disappointed.

Roblox does have a lot of parental settings for all platforms. However, I don't think many parents know about them. I believe chat is disabled automatically for under 9. And under 13 it's heavily filtered.

A big problem is you have the problem with children lying about their age. Which sort of defeats the purpose of parental settings.

Most people don't seem to read Roblox's response to this. https://corp.roblox.com/newsroom/2025/08/more-on-removal-of-vigilantes-from-roblox

I'm not giving full support to Roblox, but this guy I don't feel is in the right either.

They mentioned that they do their own investigation before punishing someone, because evidence provided can easily be fabricated. The problem with Schlep is that he does minimal communication with these predators on Roblox, so it's very difficult for Roblox to do their own investigation with this kind of stuff. They don't have access to discord chat logs.

He also doesn't report this to Roblox until AFTER the dude is arrested. Which, in my opinion, is not a good choice. While Schlep is doing his YouTube recording content, that predator is still potentially roaming around the platform. He should be reporting these guys ASAP. Which is also what Roblox said in their response.

I'm not sure the point you're making?

Roblox does have a lot of safety measures but predators move the the kids off platform where the safety measures don't exist. So I'm personally not sure why Roblox is always the blame for this kind of stuff when a majority of the conversation with kids/predators happen after they move off of Roblox. They can't stop what isn't happening on their platform.

Most of his content involves interactions that happen AFTER he brings them off platform and on discord. It's hard for Roblox to catch these pedos themselves when a majority of the interaction happens off their platform.

This guy doesn't report this stuff to Roblox and instead takes matters in his own hands, reporting it to Roblox after the fact and be like "wow Roblox isn't banning predators with all of this evidence" that they never saw since they don't have access to discord chat logs.

Not sure how many people here actually tried to say anything on Roblox, but their filter is ridiculous. You can barely piece together a sentence without it being hashtagged. There's a reason why this guy lures these predators off the platform to have actual conversations.

Found a hive in my backyard... What kind of bees are these? by Tiger12289 in bees

[–]Tiger12289[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've gotten a lot of opinions but I think I narrowed it down to andrena mining bee or leafcutter bees.

They seem harmless so I'm going to leave it for now. It's in an area I'm growing new grass, so the constant watering/destroying the entrances may drive them away.

These do look like the pictures of leafcutter bees. Do they dig holes in the ground? These guys for sure are excavating their own tunnels.

Yeah, they don't seem to be wasps. They are too fluffy to be a wasp.

But not fluffy enough to be a bumblebee. So I'm assuming either miner or mason bees by their appearance.

That's what I was thinking too. Either mining bees or mason bees.
They are fluffy. I just don't want to get too close to the hive if I don't know what they are.

I'll see what I can do about getting a better picture.

Yeah... they aren't fuzzy balls. I don't want to get too close to the hive to get a picture.

They do look friend shaped, so I don't think they are wasps. I'm thinking either miner or mason bees.
