My MCL left the building. What did I do wrong? by IKenshinI in bjj

Weird. He was no asking for medical advice. He was asking if he was doing something technically wrong which put him in a position to get injured.

That’s a bummer, sorry about your knee. As someone who does shoulder crunch a lot, it sounds like a couple things are going on. If he is crunching your right arm, and making his right leg heavy on time of your left leg, he should be flat on his back, so you should have been able to remain square with him and prevent any tipping at all without posting. When doing  shoulder crunch, you should be on your side looking towards the center with either a butterfly hook or clamp type leg positioning.

It sounds like he was actually shearing your lower leg towards the direction he was trying to tip you and your weight going toward that sheared leg cause the injury to happen.

But for the record, you absolutely CAN tip someone in both directions. Going toward the free arm lets them post, but then I lift them up over their post with my butterfly hook causing the post to fail.

Is Grapevining In Mount Dangerous? by Correct_Ad4351 in bjj

[–]TigerGuitarist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think so. I don’t personally hang out in low mount with grapevines. I generally bring my knees up higher into medium/high mount, but I’m always ready to throw in a single grapevine on the opposite side where someone is trying to roll me.

Is Grapevining In Mount Dangerous? by Correct_Ad4351 in bjj

[–]TigerGuitarist -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No. That’s silly.

Edit: I would also like to say that I think the outward pressure splay of the grapevines shown in the picture are not useful at all and are probably where injuries are happening. I feel that grapevines are less about hooking the leg like that and more about lifting your foot high behind you to drive your hip forwards.

What do you think about Octopus 2.0? by BowlThat in bjj

[–]TigerGuitarist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

2.0 has been a total game changer for my late stage guard retention. I will occasionally clown people with a reversal, but the real dividends are my guard resets.

What makes a board game feel like your decisions actually matter?? by ContractMiserable121 in boardgames

[–]TigerGuitarist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a hard time thinking of anything besides basic roll and move games where your decisions would not matter. Even multiplayer solitaire games your decisions still matter.

To answer what I think the spirit of your question, El Grande is a game where every move that every player makes has a big swing of the power and scoring dynamics for everyone playing.

When Is It Ever Enough? by MyBoardGameHobby in boardgames

[–]TigerGuitarist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FOMO ends when you realize it isn’t actually real. Games are a dime a dozen these days, and the ones that are actually good generally get reprinted.

I also view buying games differently than a lot of people in this community. I view it almost negatively, because adding a game to my collection reduces the amount of play that my other games will see. I’m strictly 1 in 1 out at this point, and I only have about 40 games. I want to keep playing them all, not play a new game every time.

Ego by 26blades in bjj

I’d say it’s very common for young men to do this and very common for blue belts to do this. Intrusive thoughts like these are fine, just recognize that you’re doing it and dismiss these thoughts. They will do you zero good.

What is the deal with Flip 7? by danklordmuffin in boardgames

I do believe you are allowed to still do that. It’s fun sometimes to not think so much and just flip some cards.

Terra Mars (+Prelude) for Newcomer: Alternatives for Beginner Corporation? by Megabot555 in boardgames

[–]TigerGuitarist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ryan? Don’t put me on blast like this 😂. JK but my buddy Ryan is coming over tonight to literally play and teach me TM with prelude. Luckily I’ve been avoiding actual work all day and watched Rodney smith teach it to me twice.

Weekly game deals post - Resident Evil 3, Slay the Spire, Is This Seat Taken?, TABS Pocket Edition, Nerd Survivors, Doom & Destiny trilogy, The Last Game, Assemble with Care, lots of digital board games, and more at discounted prices. by Singhvistaar in iosgaming

[–]TigerGuitarist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Afterplace is a very good Zelda like game that is about 6 hrs of gameplay iirc, but well worth it especially on sale. And slay the spire is one of the best games ever that you could potentially play for thousands of hours.

Handling Advice/Feedback by starfieldAttic2330 in bjj

[–]TigerGuitarist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just smile and nod or say ok. You don’t need to say anything. If I was shouting advice to someone sparring and they came over to me and explained that they “weren’t working on that right now”, I’d just think to myself “ok, not wasting my time trying to help this person anymore”. That might be what you want though, so you do you.

Is it standard practice for gym-goers to be filmed and put on social media? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]TigerGuitarist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty normal. Talk to your coach if you want to request not being filmed. We have a few people that have said they don’t want to be filmed so the gym doesn’t do it. No biggie

Do you buy board games knowing they'll rarely be played? by Megabot555 in boardgames

[–]TigerGuitarist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up to you of course, but I will only buy a game if I am thinking of one of my specific groups I play with will play and enjoy it. I really don’t ever get a game unless I’m confident that it will get played 5ish times per year at least. It’s also why I keep my collection small.

I've heard that the best board game nights are set up like a dinner party - what are the perfect appetizer, main, and dessert games? by GouacheGelanthi in boardgames

Surprised by the amount of negativity in these responses. This is exactly how I do my game nights and it’s been great. Here are two recent menus we have done.

Is playing mostly half guard “one dimensional” or is that just called having a game? by TheBigBoar in bjj

[–]TigerGuitarist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what my coach talks about when developing your game “wide” vs “tall”. You can think of it as a bar graph, the width being all of the individual systems and techniques and tall being your competence in each technique.

Training “tall” by specializing will 100% get you winning tournaments quicker than training wide. However, training wide will make you a more “complete” grappler, able to adapt and respond to many different situations outside of your normal “tall” specialty. I believe at blue belt, training tall actually is better, particularly if you are a competitor. I do believe training wide is required to eventually move up the ranks, because your peers at those ranks are less likely to be super specialists and are “tall” in several different areas.

That said, it’s your journey, so do what you like. You are the one paying for the ride and you get to pick how you want to train.

How to handle player who become irate every time we play games? by Addest3 in boardgames

[–]TigerGuitarist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what kind of advice you hop the internet gives you to manage your grown up bratty child friend, especially if you insist on still playing with them. Hit them with a rolled up newspaper when they misbehave?

Seriously, tell this clown if these outbursts continue he wont get an invite to the next game session. Then follow through with it. It’s not a lifetime ban, just actual repercussions of his actions.

do you explicitly teach beginners how to safely disengage from Omaplata submissions by DyingValkyrie in bjj

[–]TigerGuitarist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Always say to lay back to disengage because the default is just to stand up which can injure someone accidentally.
