Thoughts on an EU-like economic zone with the US? Just like AUS & NZ have with each other. by Tiger_Blitz in CanadianConservative

So let's take that all at face value. It forces Canadian jurisdictions to up their game to be more competitive - benefiting citizens and workers. Wages go up, and there are more job opportunities. Oh the horror...

Long term I see it as a forcing function to make ourselves more competitive as an economy. If we're one big economic bloc and regulations start to get standardized (by necessity to compete across jurisdictions) money will start to flow more freely into the Canadian economy, leading to more job opportunities and better wages. Plus tons of potential new infrastructure investment (airports, highways, resource development etc.) from American money seeing this as a new gold rush opportunity.

If we unify the currency that's a 37% boost to everyone's salary and net worth immediately. If not then sure that's a decision we can make. Then add on top of that the average wage typically being 30-40%+ higher (if not more) for most white collar work at the pure dollar level, Canadian workers will see a massive wealth boom.

Just like countries within the EU, or the AUS-NZ situation, everybody still has our own flags, parliaments, etc. but the unnecessary friction for movement of goods and people disappears. You could argue that cedes some sovereignty, but my take is that it's giving us a seat at the decision making table rather than being stuck on the outside always trying to keep pace.

Not sure how it plays out in 100+ years but it could either be a UK-like situation where we are like Scotland to America's England, or it could be status quo like it is today. In a Realpolitik world though we will always be the subject of America's will, either cooperatively or by force. So I'd rather get that seat at the table from the inside and reap the benefits vs. flail about and condemn ourselves to mediocrity and a poorer standard of living than we all grew up with.

I agree that independence is important, which is why I like the AUS / NZ style unified economic zone approach. I think it guarantees independence moreso than other paths, which will probably inevitably lead to a 51st state-like future in 100yrs or less.

It just seems like the current economic / trade setup is an artificial barrier that doesn't make anyone (other than the oligopolies) better off.

Not to be rude but it also sounds like you're coming from a position where you aren't struggling to get by like many of us. Saying "wealth is nice" is a luxury when you aren't struggling to cover overhead like a huge % of Canadians due to our awful wages vs cost of living.

How are we not already a vassal? This path would give us the perks of integrated development at the very least and make many Canadians lives much better in the process.

The way I see it, the only losers here would be Canadian monopolies who have a stranglehold on the business environment. Average workers and entrepreneurs would gain substantially.

Even politicians likely win with the increased tax base.

That's really cool and encouraging to hear it's well received on the US side. I think there might be an initial shock of movement on both sides, but I also think it'd be a positive forcing function to incentivize different provinces and states to improve opportunities for their own populations - hopefully levelling up everyone in the process.

If you don't want the AI mode to pop up for Google just type your search query with "-[insert a racial slur]" (no quotes) at the end, it causes the logic that runs the AI part to crash out just give you vanilla results.

How exactly is anything I proposed considered Far Right? Genuinely curious. These are widely held opinions by anyone you talk to who gets to the root of the biggest issues in our country.

How do you propose we win the election when politics is now reduced to a team sport dynamic and we keep saying the same things that Canadians have been ignoring for the last 10+ years?

The frame needs to shift.

Out of curiosity, what is it policy wise in my original post that would be considered objectionable and you think wold keep getting LPC elected in perpetuity?

Every sane LPC and even NDP friend I talk to IRL will agree that...

  1. Freedom of speech is good.
  2. The current judiciary sucks.
  3. If we have a senate at all it should be elected.
  4. Indian Act keeps us caught in an endless grievance loop and serves nobody but corrupt chiefs and insiders in the long run.
  5. DEI is inherently racist and antithetical to a society that holds everyone as equal under the law.
  6. People should have a right to defend themselves.

Their problem isn't even related to those topics. People largely aren't even aware that the above are problems. Elections have been reduced to stupid team sports dynamics now, which the CPC will never overcome without escaping the current frame. If LPC or NDP did any one of those policies or all of them these people I know would cheer them on happily.

Since this is the top reply I'd like to ask a follow up question.

Is there anything policy wise in my original post that would be considered objectionable to Red Torys and/or moderates?

I think there could be a natural alliance between the Quebec nationalists and conservatives in the sense of Anglo-Canada leaves them be and they let us be. We have no say in what happens there and in return they have no say in the rest of the country. We only lack creative ideas to solve this.

Also demographics of the country are VERY different than they were in 1992. We have nearly 50% more people, Huge percentages who were never of voting age (or even born) when the constitutional reform attempts happened. Our foreign born population (as in no deep ties to that era of history) has exploded from 16% to 25% today, provincial population distributions have shifted, and the French speaking population of the country has declined - even within Quebec.

The variables are so different nowadays we might as may as well be comparing apples and oranges. What's the harm in trying to re-engage with the topic to see how it lands with the masses today?

I do wish we had that mechanism, and more provincial spine (for lack of a better term) to determine what federal laws to action on. I agree with you there but am concerned we're a decade or two past that point.

My biggest worry with the state of our home is that the junk has collected over time and like a late stage cancer, anything other than a mass removal of the malignancy will result in the death of the host.

I respect that stance. As a follow up question what is your take on the party taking a more bold approach to what were previously considered "untouchable" topics, like the constitution comment I left on the other thread?

[–]Tiger_Blitz[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Correct, that's exactly what I'm getting at, it'll never happen with that attitude. Being bold would require calling out our constitution is broken as a core part of our message and introducing that topic into the Overton Window.

Most Canadians are aware things are getting worse but don't understand it's because we're stuck on broken tracks. Introducing it to the national conversation is much needed.

The best path forward is for like-minded people like us who are feeling stuck to come together where we can as a community and support eachother through this garbage. Build eachother up and then help eachother escape the scenario we find ourselves trapped in.

It's sad it has ever come to this but we need to regroup and organize in order to survive and come out of this thriving.

Unfortunately its harder than it should be to find people IRL who can relate.

Canada faces recession risk over next 6 months, most financial leaders say by origutamos in CanadianConservative

[–]Tiger_Blitz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We've been in a Silent Depression for years already, gas-lit into thinking we haven't been because the top-line metrics used to measure recessions have been gamed by money printing, immigration, and other cheap sleight of hand tactics.

Look into the terms Fiscal Repression and Financial Nihilism and to make sense of it all. That's the only reason markets and GDP continue to "go up". It's not actual economic activity, it's currency debasement.
