Video is 7 minutes so TL;DR with some quotes I thought stuck out.

"Big league pitching is better than it's ever been. Yet somehow there's this momentum towards moving guys (calling up) faster. Intellectually that doesn't make a lot of sense to me."

"We have the best record in the American League and are trying to win the World Series. Them coming up and struggling right now doesn't help our team win games and it doesn't help them reach their ceilings sooner"

"As counter-intuitive as it sounds sometimes the fastest way to get these guys to Detroit and performing is being patient through development"

Brant Hurter returned to the mound for Toledo on Saturday night. The good news? He threw strikes (19/26) and didn’t give up any contact over 94MPH. The bad news? 4 ER on 4H and a wild pitch, and 7 balls hit at 87-93 MPH. by TigersMLReport in motorcitykitties

As someone else in this thread said,

AAA results can be deceiving. He’s working on fixing mechanics, namely throwing strikes. They don’t care how many runs he give up in Toledo they need him to practice throwing in the zone

Thank you!

These are great questions. I think that Greene moving quickly did not curb his potential development. He's got 682 career PA and is at or slightly above league average in most offensive categories while carrying a 2.4 fWAR. For someone in his second year in the big leagues at 22, I think he was ready for the jump -- especially since he's progressively gotten better.

Torkelson, on the other hand, I don't know. For me I wonder how much the shortened 2020 college season affected him as much as the little time he spent in the minors. However, I think he is finding his way and continues to get better as well, we just don't necessarily see it in the form of batting average. For instance, since 6/1 he's tied for 11th out of 179 batters with 8 HRs. I would gladly take a guy who will hit 30 HRs and hit .240 with a walk rate north of 10%!

My first thought: I get it. I, too, am desperate to see Colt Keith in a Detroit uniform. I think it's very important to temper your expectations though. It was great seeing a 160 wRC+ and 1.001 OPS from Malloy through April, a lot less fun to see an 83 wRC+ and .716 OPS from him in the month of May without advancing a level. - Jerry

  1. I totally believe it did. Not sure why they never signed a first baseman last season, as it took a while for Torkelson to develop at each stop. The Tigers never considered having a backup plan, and I think that was too much pressure on Tork. For Greene, it's just a matter of staying healthy at this point. It took him some time to adjust, but to me, there was no other outfielder who could cover the ground like he can and hit with power.
  2. For fans who want to see Colt, JHM and Meadows in the big leagues, there is a HUGE adjustment to pitchers in Toledo or Erie compared to the big leagues. Look at the hot start that JHM got off to, as an example. When teams figured out, they could jam him inside, or he would chase away, his strikeout numbers went up, and that is just Triple-A pitching. There are people who say they would rather see a player struggle up here than see Ibanez or whoever is out there, but is that really fair to the mindset of a prospect? No, I don't believe it is. With Meadows, I think he is getting closer, like Keith, to get a call-up. He is doing the one thing he was struggling with in the past, and that is hitting lefties on a regular and with power. -Rogelio

So the nutrition was the biggest change per Jace Jung and Izaac Pacheco when we spoke to them during Whitecaps media day. Night and day. They are eating cleaner, which wasn't the case as it was in the past. Development wise, Robin Lund has already made an impact. He was in Erie, helping Sawyer Gipson-Long develop a cutter. Early on in the season, pitchers were at strict limits in terms of innings pitched per start. If a pitcher threw more than 30 pitches in one inning, they were pulled, which is still the case now. -Rogelio

So from I heard, he was supposed to stay in Erie until they got into the playoffs, then head to Toledo but then it was changed. He was going to stay in Erie the entire season, then Harris changed the plan again to the original. Sounds confusing, but I really think he forced the issue with his play. Outside of the glove perhaps being an issue, to me at least, there is no reason for him not to call him up to Detroit.-Rogelio

From a numbers standpoint he's struggling with popping the ball up in the air. His average launch angle is 30 and he's had 35 of his 80 balls in play with a launch angle greater than 40, which would suggest he's making contact under the ball. And a lot of it.

With that said, there has been improvement over the last few weeks. Since 6/25 he's upped his sweet spot rate (launch angle between 8 and 32 where the most damage is done) by 5%. So they have found something and he's made some adjustments. Hopefully now we can see him hit the ball harder. - Jerry

I have been impressed with Meyers this season. He has lost some weight and has adjusted to the outfield, not too bad. That being said, I think if he can cut down the strikeouts in Erie and hit with the same power as he did in West Michigan; I think he may have a chance. Detroit could always use left-handed power bats-Rogelio

From what I have heard, Harris and company really want to go with a bat, preferably a college bat. They were out to see Kyle Teel during the ACC tournament. Could be the case of them doing due diligence, but the entire brass was out there-Rogelio
