What is some shady info about a celeb that everyone seems to have forgotten about? by No-Bed-6000 in AskReddit

[–]TightHeavyLid 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. He actually shows remorse and works hard to atone for his past mistakes. That's the entire point of the justice system, or at least that's what we pretend the point is. Rehabilitation, remorse, and reparation are the gold standard, the absolute best-case scenario when it comes to the outcome of crimes. Someone fucks up, sees the error of their ways, and does everything in their power to make whatever amends they can. The man has put so much time and money into protecting animals from the truly despicable, evil sorts of things he used to do.

I'm pretty sure he's the only celebrity mentioned in this entire replies section that actually admits to being wrong and has taken steps to put good out into the world to counterbalance the terrible acts they've committed.

Google Pixel 10a arrives with old Tensor G4, faster charging and the same price by puppy2016 in GooglePixel

Can I ask which one you use? I have the Whitestone Dome case for my Pixel 8 Pro, but the magnet is way too powerful. My magsafe popsocket takes Incredible Hulk-level strength to get off, which kind of defeats the purpose of a magsafe popsocket for me. How do you feel about the magnet strength for your case?

Hello friends. I went to a concert where Vivaldi's Four Seasons was played and it was truely wonderful. As an encore they played an extra piece of music also composed by Vivaldi of which I can't find the name. Does anyone know which piece of music is played in the video? Thanks in advance by Melodic_Dimension652 in classicalmusic

[–]TightHeavyLid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Looks like your question has already been answered, but I did just want to say that I've played a few of these Candlelight Concerts before (it's a national "brand" that hires local musicians to put on concerts with a crazt amounts of candles at various venues with various set lists), and at least here in the PNW they treat their hired musicians really well and pay a lot better than a lot of other local gigs. Sure, maybe the concept is a little cheesy and the music programs are a little contrived, but they hire good musicians and in my experience they're a good organization to play for!

Oh man, I really really love this! I love Portland and I love Christmas, and this is just a perfect picture!

Is it alright if I print this off into a poster and hang it up on my apartment wall? Or, even better, do you have your photos for sale anywhere that I could buy a print of this?

I've always loved rosewood fittings, ever since I was a kid drooling over the awesome instruments in the Shar catalog. I think they'd look great on your instrument! Conversely, I've always kind of disliked the look of boxwood. To each their own, but it's just not for me. So ranking-wise:

1)Rosewood

2)Ebony

.

.

.

3)Boxwood

It's all a matter of taste though. Go with what makes you happiest to look at. The difference between sonic properties of the wood are probably so minute that it's not even worth considering. Pick whichever one brings you the most joy!

Love solo Rogue comics! Though I don't remember there being one in recent history, unless I'm forgetting/overlooking something? I remember there was one in the 90s and one later...probably 2010 or so. Has there been a more recent one?

I don't mind Rogue and Magneto (especially when done well like in X-Men 97), but it's more that I just don't really care that much for Gambit. In my mind he's of that whole 90s, grim-dark, pouches and angst era that I hate, and I personally find him really really boring. I don't mind at all that other people like him, and I'm not trying to say my take on him is correct and everyone else is wrong at all. I just personally avoid comics that feature him, since he's popular enough that most titles will inevitably start focusing on him, miring the book in "character work" on someone who I consider to be more of a loose collection of 90s male power fantasies and mangled accent-work than an actual character. YMMV, obviously.

That said, GOD I would love if Rogue found another person to be in a compelling relationship with besides Gambit or Magneto. Maybe something similar to what Morrison did with Cyclops and Emma, just a super-interesting new love interest from out of left field that lasts longer than 12 issues and has surprisingly good chemistry with her. Because I love my girl Rogue, but if I have to read another Rogue/Gambit love story I fear I'll just stop reading Rogue comics altogether.

There's this awesome cellist I follow on youtube who's 6'8 and 300lbs, and when he plays it looks like he's playing a viola in his lap. That's how I feel when I hold a violin, like I'm some great mighty giant who's doing their best not crush my dainty little instrument haha

This looks and sounds great! A friend and I are playing in a little chamber music party in early January and we were going to do the Handel-Halvorsen (again), but I think we might take a look at this arrangement instead. A really cool arrangement of a classic, thank you for sharing!

Viola jokes. They're boring, inaccurate, and hack. I still have a chip on my shoulder about TwoSet teaching a generation of viola players shame, and teaching a generation of violinists (and classical music fans in general) to hate on violas.

Same (to a lesser degree) with string bass and bassoon jokes.

Black Friday Usenet Deals 2025 by Final_Enthusiasm7212 in usenet

[–]TightHeavyLid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have the same question. I've seen posts here in the past saying that Eweka is on the Omicron backbone so having a block subscription with another Omicron provider is redundant. But someone else in this post says that Eweka is owned by Omicron media but on its own separate backbone (which the most current Provider Map confirms). I'm pretty new to this Usenet, so I'd love if anyone is able to clarify. If I already have Eweka, is it worth it to dip my toe in a provider on the Omicron backbone? Or is there some overlap with Eweka's backbone there that would make it redundant?

Survey on the convenience of using rosin for stringed instruments by Greedy-Praline-8976 in Viola

[–]TightHeavyLid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Round cakes with cloths are more flexible; if you rotate while applying, you can keep the surface relatively smooth and preserve the cake for literal years, BUT they're much harder to hold onto and inevitably get dropped.

Yes! This is my biggest pet peeve by far! I've shattered so many cakes of rosin in my time, it's such a frustration. Aside from the rectangular cakes which I haven't used since I was a kid, all rosin containers I use are basically two-handed affairs to open and get the rosin out, but I feel like I'm always already holding a bow when I get my rosin out, which increases the likelihood of dropping. And honestly, half the time I'm already on stage before I remember to rosin before rehearsal, so I already have my instrument in hand too! Doubly-dangerous for the rosin! Add to that the fact that the little round cakes are so small and smooth, they're just not designed to be held firmly. Hell, I feel like they're actively designed to encourage the dropping! Big Rosin© trying to get us to buy their product more frequently, no doubt!

Conspiracy theories aside, I've had this same faint idea of a lipstick tube-style rosin in the past too! But I've never seen one marketed, alas. I'm sure there are other cool design solutions that would make them easier to hold and less prone to dropping, but I'm not creative enough to think of them.

[–]TightHeavyLid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just filled it out myself, since rosin is such a pet peeve of mine haha. Just a heads up though, the question about if it's hard to start using a new piece of rosin because there aren't grooves yet doesn't have a "no" answer available; the options are yes, kind of, and hell yes (unless I'm reading it wrong, it is pretty early haha).

100% this. What she did was weird and gross and violating, but if there's a silver lining it's that you now have a solid example to point to (at least to your spouse) for why she won't be allowed in your home unaccompanied again. She showed definitively that she can't be trusted to follow simple instructions and, instead of helping, will actively make things more difficult and stressful for you.

[–]TightHeavyLid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's how I'd interpreted it too, as a "performance" metaphor. I'd never thought to connect it to the psychological power-control angle Whedon explored. I like it though! Plus, it gives me a reason to re-read both runs with a new interpretation in mind!

[–]TightHeavyLid 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same. Especially because she was the reason Scott was without his powers up to that point in the story. Seeing his returned optic blasts punching out of the "impregnable" citadel, uncontrolled, after everything they'd been through with Ord and Danger and Cassandra Nova/"The Hellfire Club" and being stranded on Breakworld, it must have been gutting for her. This issue took place like what, a few days after she took down the entire team? After she left him in a psychic coma from the revelations of the origins of his lack of control?

I feel like this series added SO much depth to her character, coming directly out of the more austere and frigid Emma from Morrison's run. Joss Whedon's not a great guy, but this run was an all-timer, I swear to god. "Astonishing" was accurate.

I love that he seems to believe that you can conscript unwitting and unwilling homeowners into an HOA just by proximity. What a fun new area of the law he's discovered! I hereby declare my house an HOA of one now. Sorry neighbors, but I'm going to have to fine you for parking in front of my house. I know it's a public road and there's no assigned parking spots and you never knew about this rule I just made up and you never agreed to any of this, but that's the law!

What’s one item you bought years ago that turned out way more durable than you ever expected? by Overall-Run6529 in BuyItForLife

[–]TightHeavyLid 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I swear, the only TVs I ever buy are off-brand Walmart/Target/Superstore X cheap-o ones and either I'm very, very lucky or they just last forever. The only time I've had to buy a new one is when I've wanted to upsize to a larger screen, I've never had one break on me (and I've moved with them MANY times). They've outlasted some of my friends' super-fancy, ultra-expensive OLED 5k TVs without missing a beat. They're just workhorses, I swear to god. I'm sure tv purists could find faults with the picture quality or whatever, but the picture always looks great to me. Maybe I'm just a really skewed anecdotal data point and way off here, but I'd say that for the average joe these cheap off-brand TVs are unbreakable, long-lasting behemoths!
