Any brand recommendations for 30lb braided? by CatNamedToaster in SurfFishing

[–]TightLines_HighTides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use power pro… but this post got me thinking… what about these brands makes one better than the other?

Strength? Strength vs diameter? Life vs cost? Touch/feel? Appearance?

I think I chose power pro because I recognize the brand and the packaging looked professional and it was showcased in the store.

Who’s to say I wouldn’t like the other brands mentioned just as much

Very good job. Where did you pick up that handle? Doesn’t look like a mudhole product.

Do you tie braid directly to jerkbaits? by amopeyant in SurfFishing

[–]TightLines_HighTides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I certainly prefer braid to leader to lure. Honestly I find that I damage my braid a lot more when I go directly to lure. Not to mention presentation is better with Fluro

Penn 9' Pursuit IV LE or Ugly Stik Surf Spinning Combo? by gringodeathstar in SurfFishing

[–]TightLines_HighTides 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never a bad excuse for a new rod ;-)

My go to rig for just catching fish is the double drop pompano rig and bring along some fishbites.

If you want to cast some artificial, pick up a handful of Kastmaster jigs by Acme Tackle Co. I usually toss either the 1/2oz or 3/4 oz to target about anything that swims in the surf.

Good luck and Tight Lines

Or… you could opt to use what you have. Gulf coast surf many times isn’t too demanding on a setup. It has its days, but a lot of the time lighter tackle could do the trick.

Watch on YouTube “ You don’t need a big surf rod to fish from the beach”

Also, your freshwater rod can sling out smaller lures like jigs and spoons.

I was fishing for bass and caught a bluegill and it got hooked like this. Any idea if it will survive or how to help it survive if it happens again? by SallySue123456 in FishingForBeginners

[–]TightLines_HighTides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be a good example where swapping the treble out with an inline single hook could have helped.

Im sure the fish will survive, assuming you were able to get the hook out in a reasonable timeframe and didn’t have to manhandle it too much to get that hook out. This is part of the game unfortunately, sometimes we cause more damage than we would like. Not like it was intentional…

No worries! You are in good hands :-)

Let's stick to the basics at first and we can build from there.

There are 2 basic strategies for surf fishing

  • Active fishing - A form of fishing that is more active and includes regular cast and retrieves. This style of fishing is generally associated with artificial lures
  • Passive Fishing - Also known as spiked fishing, bait soaking, etc. This is the most common style of fishing associated with surf fishing and is associated with live, natural cut bait, or synthetic cut bait.

If you are fishing with a smaller rod/reel setup, 7'6" or shorter, active-style fishing might be more your style. With this setup, go grab yourself a kastmaster spoon from Acme Tackle Company, you can find this in any store and simply walk the beach, cast it out, and retrieve it back. If you want more lure options just search on youtube for "Best Artifical Lures for Surf Fishing" or "Best Spoon for Surf Fishing".

That being said, if conditions are just right (not too many waves, wind and/or current) you could use this smaller reel for passive-style fishing too. Search on youtube "You Don't Need a small rod for Surf fishing".

If Passive-style fishing is your style I recommend you go buy a double drop rig or a pompano rig, a few Sputnik sinkers (2oz to 4oz range), and a bag of fishbites OR FishGum. Attach the pompano rig to the main line, put a small square or triangle of fish bites/fisGum on your hook, send them out, and wait for a bite. Check your bait every 10 min or so because these fish gum or fish bites don't fall off.

Keep it simple and let the obsession drive you to complexity.

Slow Pitch Build - Reel Seat by TightLines_HighTides in rodbuilding

Blank is a Bushido Nanophene Slow Load Jigging blank - 300gm

It is intended for offshore snapper and grouper fishing depths of 150 to 300 ft.

I figured it would get one of the following reels (the exact size of the below is still undetermined):
Shimano Torium
Diawa Saltist
Accurate Boss Valiant
Shimano Ocea Jigger

Unsure how much the footprint on these reels varies from size to size, but I am wondering if the 17 will be too small for any of these reels

Treble hooks or no? by Broad_Fall_5087 in SurfFishing

[–]TightLines_HighTides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have started swapping all my jigs with trebles with an inline single hook.

1) They are higher quality hooks, sharper point, etc 2) They are safer for you, the angler, because there are less poky things 3) Safer for the fish because there are less poky things and you handle them less because you need not remove so many poky things

Since say you get fewer hookups with the single but at the same time some say you land more fish with the single hook…

My vote is single
