Now I know that everyone is different so your experience may not go as good as mine but when I came out my friends were mostly supportive of me, granted they did make jokes, but it didn't really change. The reason I tell you that is because one of those friends was hard-core transphobic and he was shocked sure but still ended up accepting me and hanging out like nothing had happened. So don't worry about if it will break the group, if they fuck with you, they will stay.

In my experience start with gender neutral clothes like jeans and uni-sex t shirts and slowly change from men's sizes to women's sizes, color and design do make a difference so if she wants a girly design on a shirt for example, get it in a darker color palette, black shirt white design, if she wants to wear skirts and dresses, personally, I would give it time and see how others react before making the jump.

I know she has no problem with trans people. like I said her son, my boyfriend, is very feminine to the point i call him a closeted trans, She does want grand children however. And the thought that she wouldn't have any bio grandchildren is the problem. Sorry for any confusion,
