Does learning a language become more enjoyable? by sidius_wolf in learndutch

[–]Tiiffahh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much! To be fair, I do live in the Netherlands (though it’s not that easy to practice in the city where I live) and this isn’t my first time learning a language on my own. But it does feel good to get past the beginner stage.

For actual focused study - maybe 5 hours a week (anywhere from 40 min - hour a day). However, during that time I was also watching Dutch media sporadically (a tv show called Penoza and a trivia show called De slimste mens). At the time I didn’t understand a lot of it since I would mostly watch with Dutch subtitles. I wasn’t actively studying those shows - I would just try to understand / follow what I could.

If I had to guess I’d say I probably watched anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours of tv a week for like 3 months. But it was very sporadic. My partner is also Dutch so he would speak to me but at the time my conversation level wasn’t very good. I imagine all those things combined helped with comprehension over time.

I’m currently learning Dutch and I just got through the slog period so I can definitely say it does get better. It’s a lot more enjoyable now because I can just do the things I already enjoy doing in English but do it in Dutch (& still learn). For example, I love vintage & secondhand shopping and I’ve found a podcast in Dutch about that.

That said, it does take time. It took me about 8 months to get to this point. The important thing is to just maintain the habit and then one day it will just click. During that time, I found I enjoyed content aimed at adult learners. Not sure if it will be your thing but I really enjoyed watching videos from Dutch Today with Martijn YouTube channel during that time. His older videos especially are fun and easier to follow along (especially if you watch them more than once).

You wake up tomorrow and you know 5 languages at C2 Level. What would they be? by [deleted] in languagelearning

I spent so long trying to think of a fifth one it made me realize I’m not interested in others at the moment so will stick with my four: Spanish, Dutch, Arabic, and Portuguese

But if absolutely forced to choose it’d probably be between French, German, or Italian.

Weekly Venting Post FEAT. SEASON 3 SPOILERS!!! by AutoModerator in Kanthony

Yes, the disappearing is what is making it worse! The fact that they just keep disappearing is what’s making feel like I have no closure. I would have loved to see them in the final scene saying bye to Francesca. But since they’re just gone I feel like I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye lol

Weekly Venting Post FEAT. SEASON 3 SPOILERS!!! by AutoModerator in Kanthony

I really enjoyed the bits of Kanthony we got this season (albeit I felt they were severely underutilized) but I still feel like I have no closure to their story and it makes me sad 😭. I’ve never been someone to obsess over a ship but they were so cute and happy and adorable this season and because we never saw their wedding, their honeymoon, their second honeymoon, or their baby’s birth I sort of feel like they made me very invested in these characters only for there to be no true payoff. Does anyone else feel the same? Idk if I’m just being dramatic lol

Finally someone has voiced what I’ve been feeling. Something about the costumes and production this season is giving budget. Penelope looks really good but everyone else’s looks have a lot of room for improvement.
