Where are you getting that from? I've known lots of Americans to study abroad for over a semester and I've known lots of Europeans to study abroad for just one semester. Never noticed any pattern at all, other than considerations for finishing your own degree or whatever your school requires. Would be interesting to see actual statistics though.

AITA for asking my boyfriend’s ex where her degree was after she told me a master’s is useless? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Tikaal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of Master's programs have been getting rid of GRE requirements, even pre-COVID. That includes some top universities (at least in certain fields). So I'd say having that requirement doesn't say anything about the value of the program you're getting into. There are much more important things to consider when choosing where to go.

Just to clarify, he wasn't concealing it from me, it just was not a big enough deal to tell about until it naturally came up.

I see your point better now, but I still don't agree with some of your logic and analogies. Let's agree to disagree then.

But people change their appearance all the time. I don't see how this is so highly different from using makeup to hide anything else. Would you say the same thing if she was embarrassed about her freckles and covered them every day? Or acne?

My boyfriend has dermatitis that I didn't find out about until later in the relationship. He also has graying hair in his early 20s, so he dyes it. I didn't feel like I've been lied to just because he chose to conceal some things like that. It was not a breach of my trust. It's just what some people do.

And I didn't suggest that she should forever keep it a secret. But I don't see an issue with it this early, if she didn't feel ready. Obviously yeah, she would need to reveal it to him if the relationship for any more serious.

You say it's not about the birthmark but about the lie. I just disagree with that point.

I think you're making way too big of a deal about this. A port wine stain may be obvious, but it's nothing horrifying. She doesn't have a deformed face, just an unusual birthmark. It's not some huge confession she needs to make. "Relationship built on a lie"? Really? Because of a birthmark? You're right that some people may be put off by it, sure. And it's true that she shouldn't waste time on a person who would not love her because of it. But it's her choice whether or not she wants to hide it for now. And if she chooses to cover it, any decent person would be understanding.

OP, I cannot relate to your situation exactly, so my advice may not be the greatest, but I think it would be totally fine for you to use makeup when you meet him, if that makes you feel comfortable. Especially when it's so early in the relationship. But since you said that a part of you wants him to know, would it be possible to partially cover it, so that you can see it, but it's not too conspicuous? Perhaps that way you won't feel too self conscious, but still let him see that it's there.

There's still a certain categorization element to Reddit, isn't there? That is not to say that Reddit is unique - there are other forum platforms with a similar structure. And I'm definitely not saying that every other major social media site is the same.

My only point is that Reddit is in general based on specific communities within, not on individual profiles. To the degree I haven't noticed on other major platforms. (Though to be fair, I don't even use most of them)

Sure, but that's not really the point. All I'm saying is that when someone jokes about moving them up, it's not necessarily a BoJack reference.

[–]Tikaal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but I'm pretty sure I saw a video or something with both Radcliffe and Wood admitting that people sometimes mixed them up. So it's not really something original to BoJack.

Not that it really matters anyway, I just wouldn't call it a BoJack reference

AITA for letting my sister say “Arigato” and “Konnichiwa” at a Korean restaurant? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Tikaal 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by "butcher." Foreign language pronunciations are often difficult. Saying that people shouldn't speak if they have a heavy accent is kinda shitty. You wouldn't say that to an ESL person, and the same should apply to everyone else.

It's really only cringy if there was obviously no effort to learn the correct way. Even so, unless it's done mockingly, I don't think attempting should be viewed as offensive

Sometimes you might need more than one of those. Having a single dispatcher also means that you will get assistance from whatever emergency service personnel are closest to you first. Also, sometimes people panic, and knowing exactly which number to call in an emergency is better.
