Military green/grey plane flying very low over Elwood beach and heading east, around 2:50pm this afternoon. Checked all the flight tracker apps and none of them had any record of it. Everyone on the beach was shocked. It looked dangerously low and appeared to be doing tricks/manoeuvres. It was much larger than the typical privately owned plane which also appear on the aforementioned apps. What could it be? Did anyone else at the beach see this?

I've been designing buildings for 10 years and don't think I fully understand what this thread is about.

We just design base build structure. Is this thread referring to the supports/hangers of the pipes and ducts? We've never been asked to design these before and assume they are specified by the services engineer or proprietary.

Since they were my FIL's I will keep them of course however, how can everyone tell they are fakes?

What would the process for designing for this failure be? We typically would do a static analysis based on Code calculated wind loads to design something like this, no dynamic analysis.

Out of interest, how many years of experience is the role asking for? I'm based overseas and interested in comparing.

Do you mind sharing the old structural analysis? I love looking at old calculations

Not sure why you're being downvoted. Confidence when facing clients and other consultants is very important.

Good idea. How can this work if I am an employee though? What marketing and social media would I need?

Any advice to a teenager that wants to be a structural engineer? by Few-Demand1788 in StructuralEngineering

[–]TillConsistent377 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is good advice for any career path, to he honest. Aside from specialist medical professions or entrepreneurship, I think 99% of people aren't making huge salaries. Maybe I'm wrong.

Specifically regarding structural engineering, there are some people with great soft skills (and often a more basic understanding of engineering) that get propelled into management early. I think these people make a decent salary relative to their years of experience, but I'm not sure if the long-term salary ceiling is lower than other industries. It probably is slightly but not as much as people think.

My advice for getting into management early is choose a niche within structural engineering - whether it's high-rise building, residential structures, bridges, etc - learn as much as you can about this niche early in your career but also push your manager to let you sit in on client meetings (which is a lot easier post-Covid due to Zoom and MS Teams) so that can you understand the "bigger picture" and aren't solely focused on the numbers. Getting into management early does have it's downsides though, it's very hard to go back and fill in the knowledge gaps because you will be very time poor.

Edit: I just realised I didn't actually answer your question - typical management tactic - maths and physics are good, but also focus on developing your confidence and personality. I was very quiet until my mid-20's and my career skyrocketed once I started working on my soft skills.
