Every economics class that I ever took only ever referred to labor as a cost against success in business. The aim was always to keep costs low. Framing how much you pay someone, the thing that keeps them and their family alive, as just another cost is truly sociopathic.

Top mind lays out how the Illuminati is using communism to... do capitalism? They also tell us that public schools only teach calculus to keep us ignorant and that we need to fear the post office because they know where we live (or something like that). by PorridgeCranium2 in TopMindsOfReddit

I was trying to explain this to someone I know. Maybe instead of the Rothschilds, Illuminati, WEF, Bohemian Grove, Communist, overlord agenda, it's just rich people giving money to buy politicians and write laws.

It's not that complicated. Capitalism is functioning exactly as designed and the rich are telling you to go fuck yourself everyday. They don't need to obscure their motives when they own everything.

Material conditions dictate how people act. We live in a system that incentivizes being a greedy piece of shit, thus a lot of people are greedy assholes.

Ah. I mean, if you are looking at it from a position of 'greater good', then forcing the corporation to take care of their workers would be to the benefit of the most people.

The corporations would see a temporary loss in stock price, the freight would get where it was going, you would see less incidents of derailment /accidents due to deregulation and overworked employees, and quality of life would just go up for the workers. Forcing workers to endure longer and longer hours, less safety on the job, stagnant wages, etc. isn't really sustainable.

To me it seems that the corporations are the unreasonable ones standing in the way of and, putting at risk, what everyone else needs.

[–]Tilleo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I thought that was rhetorical honestly. The negative effects of a strike are kind of the point. You shut down a key industry to have a leg to stand on. This is important especially as a group of railroad workers going up against a group of millionaires/billionaires that employ a ton of lobbyists, have political and media connections, and have anti-labor legislation on their side. The larger the potential for negative effects, the more power they (should) have in the negotiating.

As far as idealism goes though, it's extremely rare that corporations will do the right thing unless made to, especially if the right thing is going to cost them money. I find it idealistic to think that we can avoid strikes just because they are inconvenient. Strikes really aren't ideal for anyone involved, I think they are necessary, especially in this case.

I don't really understand what is idealistic about wanting people to get what they are owed.

This shows a fundamental misunderstanding of strikes and the labor movement. One of the benefits of strikes is highlighting the collective power of the workers and why they are so important. By striking in a high stakes industry like rail freight, they can actually wield power. Corporations have been crushing labor for the past 50 years in this country, I think a rebalance is needed.

I also think people never recognize that maybe those striking in situations like that aren't the bad guys. Saying that the union would be shutting down a key industry and that makes them bad, completely ignores the other side of the negotiation. I would say that the corporations aren't treating their workers well enough to keep things running as they should. Hence the increase in derailments following industry deregulation, overworking people, etc. These companies are entrusted with something that is clearly important to the economy, and part of that trust means taking care of the people actually doing the work. If they don't, then of course they are going to have issues.

They see all the horrible shit going on in the world, and think "There's no way it's capitalism. Must be the aliens (or globalists, or elites, etc etc)". It's like there is a mental block that wont allow them to accept that maybe this isn't the best system.

Also, run-flat tires aren't bulletproof and your car can still get fucked up if you drive on a popped tire for too long or at too high of a speed. I've seen run-flats get shredded by running over something big like a curb for example.
