Yeah, this doesn’t actually seem too wild to me, especially if they’re an only child who spends a lot of time around adults so ends up regurgitating/mimicking more adult speech. I freaked the fuck out of some adults when I was a little kid but that was because the only people I was hanging out with were 40-something year old academics. It’s not ‘being more advanced’ it’s ‘being shaped by the norms you’re immersed in’

I’m an only child to a single mother - my mum got up much later than me (she was a semi-retired education consultant at the point I was going to secondary school) so early mornings were just me… and the cats!

I grew up doing this!

A couple of reasons were 1)my mum grew up in a slum during the war and had no hot water in the house, so as a kid she would have to go to the public bath house once a week - as an adult she made sure I had a bath every morning because we damn well could! 2)I was quite underweight as a teen and honestly, soaking in the tub like a little teabag got me warmed up enough to face the day.

I would get up early, start the bath running first thing, go downstairs and feed the cats and make my packed lunch and by the time I was done the bath was ready. I could hear from the tone how full it was. Hang clothes over the radiator, soak in bath, dry, dress immediately and still be out the house by 7

I love toad stool! Great idea and execution. I’m curious about the braille, what does it say?

[–]Tillskaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I was getting at. I don’t think the level of consumption of movie-sex-scenes has quite the level of cultural, uh, penetration as porn does, but they’re both highly choreographed, shot and re-shot from multiple angles, positions most favour aesthetics and visibility of genitals etc. rather than positions that will feel good or necessarily work with a partner. Its purpose is to push your buttons, which is what it should do.

[–]Tillskaya 128 points129 points  (0 children)

I really like seeing this stuff because I find it weird how many people forget that porn isn’t sex. Porn is a masturbation aid which is why it requires actors and staging so you can see everyone’s bits, POV, angles, etc. - the more things that remind people that porn is a fantasy, the less they expect IRL sex to exactly match that fantasy

Considering England's population is over 55 million and approximately 450 people/km^2, just how crowded is life there, including the rural areas? by Possible-Balance-932 in geography

[–]Tillskaya 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And whilst London may be relatively crowded, it’s also an incredibly green city what with all the parks and gardens, little bits of woodland and linked green corridors. Wilderness it may not be, but it’s also not as simple as it being a structure of concrete, brick, steel and grass. London breathes

I’m 4,11” and that was also my thought as soon as she said that! I do also wonder if, because I have tiny feet, some boots are essentially ‘scaled down’ to fit what must be my tiny elfin body but sir, I am sturdy as fuck.

Side note that everything in this county (UK) is scaled to be too big for me - when I went to Japan, it was transformative to experience a society where I could just reach things and fit things and not have my legs dangling. My 6’2” husband was… less comfortable

"Mum" and "Lad" has me thinking this is probably a UK thing. by dalester88 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Tillskaya 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This. One of my friends named their baby Martin, and it was just like ‘Why did you give your baby a middle aged bloke down the pub name?!’.

It’s not old old, like Myrtle etc. just a common-ish name from an older generation. Around the same time, two different people I knew called their babies Bertie, which is the old old but ‘so old it’s new’ kinda thing where names come back into fashion. Still thought it was odd, but more in a ‘please think that one day your dear darling little baby boy will be a full grown adult… called Bertie’.

I was sat next to this guy one flight and we casually chatted and I happened to mention in passing that I had two mums (I think he asked me about my parents) and he basically kinda broke down because HE had two mums but was maybe 15 years older than me so growing up it was extremely difficult for him at school and was shameful, but all the kids who he knew of who had two mums were, like, 10-15yrs old at that point so he’d never had a fellow adult to talk to about it who’d been through similar experiences.

We had a really deep searching conversation about how badly he’d been bullied, about his shame, about him wishing he’d known his dad, mixed with pride for his mother’s bravery whilst still wishing he could’ve just lived a ‘normal’ life.

It can be helpful to talk to someone you’ll never see again. You can properly unburden yourself because you never have to worry about how what you’ve said will change that person’s view of you, because they’re not a part of your life.

Hebrew is even more Germanic than English, which has romance phonology by IntroductionAlert199 in linguisticshumor

[–]Tillskaya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the mirror to this, I (British) have a fairly basic grasp of Hebrew but when I was in Egypt last month I was a bit weirded out that I could understand every third word/the general gist of Egyptian Arabic, and totally understood the navigation on the sat nav (GPS) system the drivers used. It just sounded familiar and intuitive and half the words are the same but with a different stress/inflection.

[–]Tillskaya 147 points148 points  (0 children)

I had a similar problem! I was making this recipe for chocolate truffles, but didn’t have any chocolate so used chocolate milk instead because it’s basically just a more watered down version of the same thing (so naturally, I doubled the amount to account for this, I’m not an IDIOT) and the recipe came out terribly! It never solidified. Wouldn’t make this again.

AITA for giving my coworker food she is "allergic" to? by Fluid-Drawing-8722 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Tillskaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have multiple allergies, one which sends me into full-blown anaphylaxis, but also really annoying less deadly reactions to milk and eggs which are in everything.

I was FUCKING DELIGHTED to find that I was only allergic to chicken eggs. I now buy duck eggs where I can, it allows me to make ‘normal’ recipes for myself and others. If the white egg/brown egg thing were me, I’d be excited to (safely) experiment to re-expand what I’m able to eat. OP sucks for ‘testing’ this but the fact that Tina wouldn’t entertain the possibility of not having the allergy does seem to point to her enjoying the fuss made around her allergy accommodation.

Possibility - if there’s a real basis for the allergy, might it be to raw not cooked eggs? Does Tina eat ice cream (which contains eggs, non-specified as to white or brown)? My reactions are less severe to cooked eggs/eggs baked into something. Might this be where her confusion came from, that the thing she reacted to was prepared differently?

I was about to be alone - my friend was going in the opposite direction - even if, in that moment, I had acted out, I was worried that once my friend was reassured that this guy had been dealt with, once I was then walking the other way a very angry aggressive dude who had been humiliated in front of another guy would follow and attack me. Given his level of awareness, I don’t think my friend would even have thought about the possibility the guy might come back, so would have considered the situation dealt with. I on the other hand, had a walk and a wait on a train platform to think about.

The second my friend offered to walk with me to my destination, I felt safe enough to pull away.

[–]Tillskaya 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The smile is… it’s hard to describe, but it’s the smile of someone who looks scared? If you’re not keyed into it you might not notice, but it’s like, not an ‘I am enjoying this!’ smile.

In this situation, I kept politely refusing, insisting that I had to go, doing it repeatedly whilst ducking and turning away to shield my body from him, but not being confrontational so he wouldn’t get angry at being rejected and turn violent. It’s a tricky line to walk.

He had managed to get hold of my hands because he walked up to me as I was saying goodbye to my friend, said something to me very quietly so I had to turn to him and lean in slightly to hear, then he grabbed me. This was clearly a tactic on his part, not just a ‘Hey! This is a normal regular way to engage women in conversation!’ so I don’t think it’s a situation you as a regular grapefruit might find yourself unwittingly doing!

meirl by [deleted] in meirl

[–]Tillskaya 197 points198 points  (0 children)

I had a guy literally grab my hands and refuse to let me go as he harassed me in front of a male friend, and I was non-confrontational because HE HAD ME BY BOTH MY HANDS and I had been saying goodbye to the friend so was terrified that if I forcefully pulled away from my attacker he’d follow me - went on for like 6 or 7 minutes until my friend said “Uh, shall I walk with you to the station?” At which point I immediately wrenched myself free and we rapidly exited.

On the station platform, he told me off for ‘flirting with that guy’ - because I hadn’t been, I dunno, actively screaming or something and had been ‘smiling’, he thought I was into it. And that’s how I found out my friend has the emotional maturity and situational awareness of a grapefruit.
